A model number, matching-looking shell, or familiar firmware string cannot prove that a Blu-ray drive contains the mechanism advertised. Recent reports describe older drives placed in higher-end enclosures with spoofed firmware. To assess a suspected fake Blu-ray drive, compare several independent clues—labels, software identity, internal hardware where appropriate, and exact-model manufacturer support—rather than relying on any one check.
Why a drive can look genuine and still be the wrong hardware
On October 1, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that RPCS3 developers had warned about fake Blu-ray drives using older mechanisms that cannot read PS3 discs, presented in higher-end shells and packaging with spoofed firmware. The reported warning signs included misspelled label text, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates, and covered PCB markings. An apparent mismatch does not always mean a counterfeit. Some drive families are rebadged: FreeMKV notes that certain ASUS-branded devices contain LG hardware, while a visually similar ASUS model is a rebadged Pioneer drive. A different internal mechanism may therefore reflect rebadging or an older/different drive placed in another enclosure; the brand printed on the shell alone does not settle the question. Which clues are useful—and how strong are they?

Check the drive in a safe order
- Record what was sold. Photograph the product label and packaging, and note the exact model, serial number, firmware revision, seller description, and purchase date. Packaging and shell are not enough to establish which mechanism is inside. Tom’s Hardware’s report
- Inspect the exterior first. Look for misspellings, poorly aligned logos, label-replacement signs, and date or model details that conflict with the claimed model. Compare the exact model with manufacturer documentation. Treat cosmetic problems as reasons to investigate, not as a standalone verdict. Tom’s Hardware; Redump
- Read the software-visible identity. Record what the operating system and a reputable drive-information tool report for model, firmware, platform or chipset, and form factor. Compare those fields with documentation for the exact drive family. A matching string is only one clue: spoofed firmware has been reported, and software identification has exceptions. - Check official firmware support. Search the maker’s support page for the exact model and revision, and determine whether the drive is retail or OEM. Follow the applicable support route. Do not run an updater for a different model to see what happens: Pioneer warns improper firmware can make a drive inoperable and directs OEM drive owners to their computer maker. - Consider internal inspection only if justified. Opening some external drives may void the warranty, and Redump warns that drives may not be designed for easy disassembly and reassembly. If the warranty and risk are acceptable and you can open it competently, compare PCB markings and layout with documentation for that exact model. - Judge the combined evidence. Multiple independent mismatches—such as label errors, unexpected internals, a chipset inconsistent with the model, or support information that does not fit—justify contacting the seller or manufacturer and keeping your photos and purchase records. Redump’s OmniDrive guide, last edited October 2, 2026, is about compatibility with the guide’s stated OmniDrive use case—not a universal counterfeit-detection standard. Apply its codes only to the covered drive families and purpose.

Covered half-height HLDS drives
For the half-height HLDS models covered, Redump says PCB markings JB8 or JB9 indicate compatibility in its OmniDrive context, while JB7 or JBC5 indicate incompatibility. It describes MT1959 reported by MakeMKV as high-likelihood evidence, but notes at least one MT1959-reported drive that was nevertheless incompatible. MT1939 or no chipset identification is incompatible for that stated purpose. These are compatibility clues, not a general ruling on whether a drive is genuine. Redump OmniDrive guide
Covered slim drives and exterior examples
For slim-drive examples, Redump identifies a BU5 2019.07.31 PCB marking as compatible in its OmniDrive context and again treats reported MT1959 as high-likelihood rather than conclusive. Its documented label examples include desktop misspellings such as “CONNECOTOR” and “FORMAT|LOGO”; slim examples include “Blu-DVD,” “The Nethelands,” “SN,” and “Data Siorage,” as well as a misaligned LG logo. Why the date and lid are weaker
Redump describes a flat lid with four dimples and a late-2015-or-later manufacture date as possible compatibility clues, but says lid shape is not a guarantee and dates are the weakest evidence because a fake can carry a newer date than its hardware suggests. It also records an unusual compatible drive with a circular top, another reason not to reject a drive by shape alone. Redump OmniDrive guide

- Do not flash firmware as a test or continue using a questionable updater.
- Keep the packaging, order record, photographs, and software identity details together.
- Ask the seller or the appropriate manufacturer support channel to confirm the exact model and whether it is an OEM or rebadged unit.
- If the seller’s listing promised a capability the drive does not provide, use the seller’s return or dispute process rather than trying to correct the mismatch with unrelated firmware.
No named source reviewed here provides a statistic for the number or share of counterfeit Blu-ray drives. The reported warning is a reason to verify an individual unit carefully, not to assume that a particular seller, model, or market is broadly affected.
