How to Identify a Cable by Its Connector, Markings, and Specifications

Inspect both ends, read the cable’s labels, and verify its specifications. A connector that fits does not prove the cable supports the performance or power you need.

To identify an unknown cable, inspect both connectors, read every marking on the jacket and housing, then check the cable family’s specifications against the devices and job you need it for. A connector that fits does not prove a cable supports the required data rate, video performance, power, or installation conditions.

1. Inspect both ends of the cable

Start with the physical details. Record the connector shape and approximate size, the arrangement of pins or contacts, and whether each end is a plug or a receptacle. Check whether the two ends are the same or different; a cable may have one connector type at each end.

Compare those observations with the connector family used by the device. A connector family can include different sizes: HDMI, for example, includes Standard HDMI Type A and the smaller Type D. The connector type can help establish what will physically mate, but it does not establish the cable’s full capabilities.

2. Read the cable’s markings

Look along the full cable jacket and at both connector housings. Also check any attached tag and the original packaging. Record the manufacturer and model, if shown, as well as any cable-family name, certification label, voltage or temperature rating, wire gauge, data-rate claim, or power rating.

  • VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
  • LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
  • COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
  • INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
  • MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)

Markings are especially important for installation wire and cable. UL Solutions explains that markings communicate evaluation status, ratings, intended uses, and limitations. Interpret them using the relevant product-category information and installation context; the guide supplements rather than replaces applicable electrical codes and requirements. See the UL Solutions wire and cable marking guide.

3. Verify the cable family and required specifications

Use the exact family name, model number, or certification information to check the manufacturer’s documentation, an official certification lookup where available, and the connected device makers’ specifications. Then compare the requirements that matter for your intended use:

Klein Tools VDV501-851 Scout Pro 3 Tester Starter Set Cable Tester
  • VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester tests voice (RJ11/12), data (RJ45), and video (coax F-connector) terminated cables, providing clear results for comprehensive testing on unenergized Ethernet cables (not designed to test PoE)
  • EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
  • COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
  • BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
  • EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
  • Connector compatibility: Does each end match the device or port?
  • Function or protocol: Does the cable support the connection type the devices require?
  • Data or signal performance: Is its stated data rate or video capability sufficient?
  • Power or electrical rating: Does it meet the required power level and, for installation wire, the relevant voltage and use conditions?
  • Length and certification: Is the length appropriate, and does the relevant certification apply to the cable and use?

These checks vary by cable family. There is no universal ranking that makes a cable “best” regardless of its connector, protocol, performance, ratings, and application.

What USB-C markings can tell you

USB-IF’s USB-C to USB-C Cable Logo Requirements say cables in its compliance program must display a 60 W or 240 W power-capability marking. Most categories must also indicate supported data rate. The stated exception is High-Speed USB (USB 2.0) USB-C to USB-C cables: they require the power icon, while a data logo is optional. Check the USB-IF USB-C to USB-C cable logo requirements for the applicable markings.

  • Automatically runs all tests and checks for continuity, open, shorted and crossed wire pairs. Visible LED status display.
  • Cable state testing (2-wire): Line DC detecting, anode and cathode determination,Ringing signal detecting open, short and cross circuit testing
  • Cable Type: RJ11 Telephone cable and RJ45 LAN cable
  • Connectors: Ethernet Cat 5, Ethernet Cat 5e, Ethernet Cat 6, Ethernet Cat 7, RJ11 6P and RJ45 8P
  • Power Source: DC9V Battery Required (not included)

A USB-C-shaped plug alone does not identify the cable’s power capability or data rate. Treat the logo as a useful specification clue, then verify the cable and device requirements rather than inferring performance from appearance.

What HDMI cable labels can tell you

HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. says HDMI cable products must carry their official cable name on the jacket; packaging must show the cable-name logo and/or an appropriate certification label. Its listed categories are Standard, High Speed, Premium High Speed, Ultra High Speed, and Ultra96, with different performance targets. The overview describes up to 18 Gbps for Premium High Speed, up to 48 Gbps for Ultra High Speed, and up to 96 Gbps for Ultra96. These are category claims, not measurements of an unidentified cable. See the HDMI cable overview.

If the markings are missing or unclear

Do not guess a cable’s complete capability from its connector. Search for a readable manufacturer or model number and consult the maker’s documentation or the connected devices’ specifications. For installation wire, rely on its marked ratings, product-category information, and applicable requirements.

If no reliable identification is possible, treat the cable’s capability as unknown. There is no single established method that identifies every unmarked cable across all families. This matters particularly for mains wiring: visual identification alone is not a substitute for confirming ratings and installation suitability.
