How to Identify a Barbara Hepworth Sculpture and Understand Its Forms

A practical guide to identifying Barbara Hepworth sculpture through authoritative records, material and formal clues, provenance and careful interpretation.

A Barbara Hepworth sculpture is identified by matching the object to authoritative records—not by deciding that its holes, curves, strings or pale surface “look like Hepworth.” Begin with a complete description of the work, search the Hepworth Estate’s sculpture index, compare the title, date, medium, dimensions, photographs and catalogue number with museum or Estate records, then test the ownership and exhibition history. Treat the result as a documented match, a plausible comparison or an unresolved attribution. The Hepworth Estate is revising its catalogue raisonné and explicitly says it does not issue certificates of authentication, so a consequential attribution requires a qualified specialist rather than a visual checklist.

What identification can—and cannot—establish

There are three useful outcomes when investigating a sculpture:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Documented match: the object’s recorded identity, measurements, material, images and history correspond to an entry in an authoritative catalogue or museum collection.
  • Plausible comparison: the object shares features and perhaps a title or date with a documented work, but the available evidence does not establish that it is the same object.
  • Unresolved attribution: the object may be by Hepworth, by another artist, a later reproduction or simply an anonymous work with related visual qualities, but the records do not settle the question.

This distinction matters because abstract sculpture can be imitated easily. A pierced oval or a stringed form may be consistent with Hepworth’s practice, yet neither feature is unique to her or sufficient to prove authorship. Online image searches are useful for finding candidates, not for authenticating an object.

Start with a complete description of the object

Record what is physically present before searching for an artist or title. Photograph the sculpture from several angles in even light, include a scale reference, and preserve close views of marks and construction details. Write down:

  • the title exactly as supplied by the owner, seller, collection or label, while marking uncertain wording;
  • the date or date range, including whether it is an original date, a later cast date or an estimate;
  • the medium and construction, such as carved wood, stone, marble, bronze, paint, string or a combination;
  • height, width and depth, using one unit consistently and noting whether a base is included;
  • signatures, initials, numbers, foundry marks, labels, collection stamps and inscriptions, with their locations;
  • the catalogue number or other identifier, if one is supplied;
  • every known owner, sale, exhibition, gallery, collection or inheritance in chronological order;
  • the source of each fact—an old invoice, exhibition label, family record, museum entry or a verbal account.

Keep observation separate from interpretation. “A rounded body has a central opening and four taut cords” is an observation; “the opening represents a mother and child” is an interpretation that should not be treated as documentary evidence.

Search the Hepworth Estate sculpture index

The Estate’s sculpture index can be searched and sorted by date, catalogue number, medium and title. Use it as a way to locate documented works, then compare the physical object with the full record rather than stopping when a title sounds familiar.

  1. Search the supplied title. Try the exact wording first, then distinctive words without assuming that punctuation or capitalization is identical to the record.
  2. Search by date. If the date is uncertain, search a range and inspect nearby entries. A date on a sales document can refer to a cast or transaction rather than the conception of the design.
  3. Filter by medium. Check wood, stone, marble, bronze and other listed materials. A material mismatch is significant unless the documentation describes versions, casts or alterations.
  4. Record the catalogue identifier. Entries use identifiers such as BH 35 for Pierced Form (1932) and BH 81 for Ball, Plane and Hole (1936). Do not treat a number written on an object as genuine merely because it resembles an Estate format; compare it with the published entry and its context.
  5. Compare every measurable detail. Match dimensions, orientation, openings, strings, color, surface and base. Allow for photographs taken from different angles, but do not explain away a different scale or construction without evidence.
  6. Save the record and its photographs. Record the access date and retain copies for your file because catalogue entries, images and availability can change.

An index hit establishes that a work with that title, date or identifier is documented. It does not by itself establish that the object in front of you is that work.

Use Hepworth’s sculpture record books and museum documentation

The Hepworth Wakefield describes Hepworth’s sculpture record books as 45 volumes compiled by the artist for 1925–1975. They record details such as medium, dimensions, sales and exhibitions and often include a photograph. The museum’s research resources page explains the scope of these records.

When a candidate work appears in an Estate or museum record, compare the object against the record-book information where it is available:

  • Medium and dimensions: an exact or near-exact agreement is more useful than a general resemblance.
  • Sales and exhibitions: dates and venues can connect the sculpture to a traceable history and may explain an old label or photograph.
  • Photographs: compare distinctive edges, tool marks, knots, openings, bases and surface damage, not just the overall silhouette.
  • Title and chronology: check whether the title, date and medium belong together in the same documented entry.

The records can show that an object corresponds to a work Hepworth documented. They cannot convert an undocumented object into an authenticated Hepworth or replace an expert examination of the object and its history.

Understand the catalogue raisonné’s status

The Hepworth Estate catalogue raisonné page states that the sculpture catalogue raisonné is being revised under Dr Sophie Bowness. The Estate invites owners to submit information and says requests for anonymity will be honored. It also states plainly that the Estate does not issue certificates of authentication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That policy changes how you should describe your result. Say that an object “corresponds to the documented work BH 35” when the evidence supports a match; do not say that the Estate has authenticated it unless a current, named authority has made that statement. For a purchase, insurance valuation, donation, litigation or export decision, provide your documentation to a qualified sculpture specialist, conservator or accredited art-historical appraiser. A catalogue search is an essential research step, not an authentication service.

Material clues: what Hepworth actually used

Hepworth worked through direct carving in wood, stone and marble, and later worked in bronze. Direct carving means working in the final material rather than first modelling a form for another craftsperson to execute. The Hepworth Wakefield quotes her: “Carving to me is more interesting than modelling, because there is an unlimited variety of materials from which to draw inspiration.” Read the quotation in context on the museum’s Barbara Hepworth artist page.

The Rijksmuseum’s account of her early modern sculpture describes wood, stone and marble and identifies pierced forms with holes as characteristic. It also notes that she later moved to bronze to make mass-produced sculptures; see the Rijksmuseum exhibition page. This career-wide range prevents two common errors: assuming every genuine Hepworth is a hand-carved stone object, or assuming that a bronze must be false.

Direct carving in wood, stone and marble

Look for a relationship between the material and the form: the grain of wood, the fracture and polish of stone, or the weight and surface treatment of marble may be integral to the design. Tool marks, sanding, polishing and repairs can help a specialist understand how the object was made, but they are not a layperson’s authorship test. A modern imitation can reproduce a smooth surface, and a genuine work can have losses, refinishing or conservation that obscure its original appearance.

Bronze and multiple versions

Bronze is consistent with Hepworth’s later practice, including works made for production in multiple examples. Do not infer an edition count, cast date or originality from a foundry mark alone. Those facts must come from the specific catalogue entry and casting documentation.

Holes and hollow forms

A pierced or hollow form is a recurring Hepworth device. Openings expose the space inside a mass, change the outline as you move around it and can make a sculpture read as both solid and landscape-like. The feature is valuable for describing what you see and for narrowing a catalogue search, but it is not a unique test of authorship.

Strings, space and the body–landscape relationship

Hepworth moved to St Ives in 1939, the year she began making stringed sculptures. She later described the strings as “the tension I felt between myself and the sea, the wind or the hills.” In 1946 she wrote, “The main sources of my inspiration are the human figure and the landscape; also the one in relation to the other.” Both quotations are reproduced by The Hepworth Wakefield.

These statements provide interpretive anchors, not a codebook in which every cord has one fixed meaning. Strings can create a visual tension across an opening, divide a volume into planes, draw the eye through an interior or suggest the pressure of wind and terrain. A rounded form may evoke a body, a hill, a shell or a shelter; the interpretation depends on the particular work, its date, material, title and arrangement.

When describing a stringed sculpture, note the number, color, direction and attachment points of the strings, whether they cross an opening or run along a surface, and whether they are original or replacements. Those details can distinguish photographs of related works, but only documentation can establish which version you are examining.

A documented example: Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red

The Hepworth Wakefield’s page for Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red (1943) describes it as an early example of Hepworth’s carved and stringed sculptures. Use it as a model for careful looking: identify the carved form, the colored areas and the strings, then check the documented date, medium, dimensions and image rather than generalizing from its appearance to every Hepworth.

The work also demonstrates why color should be recorded as part of the object’s identity. A photograph, repainting, fading or a different lighting condition can make a surface appear unlike the catalogue image. Ask whether the record describes the color as original, and whether conservation information explains later changes.

Compare two candidate works on the same axes

If you are deciding whether an object corresponds to one of two catalogue entries—or comparing two proposed attributions—use the same evidence for each. The following framework prevents a striking visual feature from outweighing documentary contradictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis Questions to answer What a strong result looks like
Documented identity Does the title and catalogue identifier correspond to an Estate or museum record? The wording, identifier and chronology align with a published entry.
Material and dimensions Do the material, measurements and construction agree? Measurements are within an explained tolerance and the medium matches the record.
Visual evidence Do photographs and details match, allowing for different views or versions? Distinctive edges, openings, knots, bases and marks align across views.
Provenance and history Is there a traceable ownership, sale, exhibition or collection history? Independent documents connect the object to the recorded chronology.
Attribution status What conclusion does the evidence justify? It is labeled a documented match, plausible comparison or unresolved attribution—not overstated as authentication.

When a value is not recorded, write “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an estimate. A missing dimension or provenance link is a limitation to report, not a reason to invent a reconciliation.

Provenance: build a chain, not a single claim

Provenance is the documented chain of ownership and movement. Assemble dated evidence in order: the earliest known owner, sale or exhibition; later transfers; the current owner; and any gaps. Useful records can include invoices, gallery labels, exhibition catalogues, photographs of the sculpture in a named collection, estate inventories and correspondence. A seller’s assertion that a work is “by Hepworth” is a lead, not an independent provenance document.

Compare provenance with the Estate or museum record. An exhibition date that precedes the documented creation date, a location that conflicts with a known sale, or dimensions that change without an explanation should be flagged for specialist review. Gaps do not automatically disprove an attribution, but they reduce what can responsibly be claimed.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“It has a hole, so it is Hepworth.”

Correction: describe the piercing, then search the index and compare the complete record. Piercing is characteristic, not exclusive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“It is bronze, so it must be a later original.”

Correction: bronze belongs to Hepworth’s later practice, but the specific cast, date, edition and foundry history require documentation.

“The signature proves it.”

Correction: photograph the mark and have it examined with the object. Signatures and numbers can be copied, altered or misunderstood.

“The Estate’s website will provide a certificate.”

Correction: the Estate says it does not issue certificates of authentication. Use its catalogue as documentation and seek qualified specialist advice for a consequential decision.

“A reverse-image match settles the matter.”

Correction: image matches can locate a similar work or a reproduction. They do not establish scale, material, condition, ownership history or identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every string or opening has one symbolic meaning.”

Correction: use Hepworth’s comments about tension, sea, wind, hills, the human figure and landscape as interpretive context, then attend to the particular work. Do not assign a universal meaning without evidence from its title, date or documentation.

A practical worksheet for an attribution file

  1. Inventory the object: write title, date or range, medium, dimensions, marks, construction, color and condition.
  2. Photograph systematically: front, back, sides, top, underside, openings, strings, base, labels and marks, with a scale reference.
  3. Search the Estate index: use title, date, medium and catalogue-number filters; save possible entries and identifiers.
  4. Check museum resources: compare photographs and details with the Estate, Hepworth Wakefield and other authoritative collection records.
  5. Reconstruct provenance: place every document, sale, exhibition and owner on a dated timeline; mark gaps clearly.
  6. Classify the result: documented match, plausible comparison or unresolved attribution.
  7. Escalate when necessary: for financial, legal, insurance or conservation decisions, give the complete file to a qualified specialist rather than relying on resemblance.

Further reference books and places to study works

The Estate lists J.P. Hodin, Barbara Hepworth, with a catalogue of sculptures by Alan Bowness (1961), and Alan Bowness (ed.), The Complete Sculpture of Barbara Hepworth 1960–69 (1971). The Estate describes both books as out of print and says a revised sculpture catalogue raisonné is in preparation. Check the edition and current availability before relying on a particular volume.

Seeing documented works in person can help you understand scale, carving, interior space, strings and surface, although viewing a museum object does not authenticate a privately owned one. The Hepworth Wakefield and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in St Ives are relevant destinations for studying authentic works; consult their current visitor information because displays can change.

How to write a responsible conclusion

State exactly what the records support. For example: “The sculpture’s dimensions, medium, photographs and provenance correspond to the Estate entry for BH 35, Pierced Form (1932), so it is a documented match to that recorded work.” If evidence is incomplete, write: “The form and material are compatible with Hepworth’s practice, but no authoritative record has been found that identifies this object; attribution remains unresolved.” This wording preserves the difference between historical documentation, visual interpretation and authentication.
