For a one-way virtual concert, create an Amazon IVS low-latency channel, send it a camera feed and a clean music mix through an encoder such as OBS, then test playback and recording before announcing the show. Use an IVS real-time stage instead when performers or guests need to exchange live audio and video with one another. A channel delivers to the audience at low latency; it does not make viewers stage participants.
Should I use IVS real-time stages or a low-latency channel?
Choose based on how performers and viewers interact. Amazon Web Services (AWS) describes low-latency channel delivery as under five seconds and IVS stage latency as under 300 milliseconds. These are service descriptions, not guarantees of end-to-end delay: location, network conditions, the player, and the rest of the production chain affect what people experience.

| Decision | Low-latency channel | Real-time stage |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | One broadcaster performing for an audience | Performers or guests who need to exchange media interactively |
| AWS-described latency | Under 5 seconds for channel delivery | Under 300 ms among stage participants |
| Audience participation | Add chat or other app interactions separately; viewers do not join the stage by default | Issue participant tokens and use a Broadcast SDK; broadcast the stage to a channel if you also need a larger audience |
| Billing basis | Video input plus video delivered to viewers | Participant-hours; channel input and output are additional if you broadcast the stage to a channel |
| Operational needs | Encoder, channel, player, and stream-key security | Stage, token issuing, client SDK, and participant permissions; recording is optional |
These modes solve different production problems; neither is universally better. AWS’s descriptions and setup guidance are at Amazon IVS low-latency streaming overview and Amazon IVS real-time streaming overview.

How do I stream a concert with Amazon IVS?
- Prepare account access. Create or select an AWS account and give the event operator only the IAM permissions needed to create and manage the event resources. Follow the Amazon IVS low-latency getting-started guide for the setup sequence, playback, quota checks, and protections against unwanted content and viewers.
- Create the channel or stage. For a primarily one-way concert, create an IVS low-latency channel. Keep its ingest endpoint and stream key private and accessible only to the authorized broadcaster. For an interactive performance, create a real-time stage and issue tokens only to intended participants; integrate the relevant web, Android, or iOS Broadcast SDK when needed.
- Build the production signal path. Send a camera feed and a clean output from the music mix to the computer running the encoder. A USB audio mixer for live streaming may help route multiple sources, but it is optional, not an IVS requirement, and compatibility depends on your setup. AWS SDK documentation also describes external audio-device support.
- Configure the encoder. Use the endpoint and key generated for your own channel, not example credentials from a tutorial. Start with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Respect the resolution and bitrate limits for your channel type. AWS documents RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest; absent a verified reason to use an insecure connection, choose RTMPS over TLS 1.2 or later. RTMPS uses outbound TCP port 443.
- Rehearse the full chain. Test using the actual camera, instruments, mix, computer, network, and viewer device. Confirm that sound is present and synchronized, that the intended player can play the stream, and that the encoder can reconnect. Allow for stream-start delay. AWS says the Amazon IVS player provides the lowest latency for low-latency playback; third-party HLS players do not provide the lowest IVS latency.
- Decide whether to record. Enable channel recording if you need an archive, or configure stage-participant recording to a customer-owned S3 bucket if that is the appropriate mode. Confirm the destination, access controls, retention plan, and associated costs. A local OBS recording can provide a separate copy, but AWS notes that network or AWS issues can affect recordings and that the service prioritizes the live stream.
- Estimate costs before promotion. Model channel input, expected audience delivery, resolutions, watch duration, viewer regions, any stage participant-hours, recording and storage, and other AWS services used by your event application. Recheck the estimate with the current AWS pricing calculator using your own assumptions.
AWS states that the maximum duration of an Amazon IVS stream is 48 hours. Plan a shorter event window and verify the current service guidance if a production might approach that limit. See the AWS setup guide.

How do I set up OBS for Amazon IVS?
OBS Studio is a documented encoder option. The exact labels can vary by OBS version; use the channel-specific ingest endpoint and key from the IVS console rather than copying values from an example.
- Install OBS Studio on the production computer and create a scene with the concert camera and any needed graphics.
- Connect the audio mix. Select the clean output from your mixer or audio interface as the OBS audio source. Monitor with headphones and check for clipping, missing channels, unwanted room sound, and audio/video sync before the show.
- Set the IVS destination. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select a custom streaming service if needed, and enter the IVS ingest endpoint and stream key for the channel. Protect the key as a credential: do not show it on screen, include it in public screenshots, or share it with performers who do not operate the stream.
- Set output encoding. In Settings > Output, use H.264 video and AAC-LC audio where selectable, and choose a bitrate and resolution supported by the channel type. In Settings > Output or the encoder’s advanced settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds as the starting point AWS recommends generally. A 1-second interval may reduce latency but can increase adaptive-bitrate switching and buffering.
- Use secure ingest. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint and TLS 1.2 or later. Ensure the production network permits outbound TCP 443. AWS also documents RTMP and SRT ingest, but use another path only when you have a specific, verified need.
- Start a private rehearsal. Start streaming, check the IVS player, and inspect audio sync and image quality on the same network and devices your viewers are likely to use. Rehearse a reconnect and, if recording, confirm the recording destination is receiving the expected material.
There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every channel type and network. Use the limits shown for your channel, then test the actual encoder, upload connection, and viewer playback; changing a setting without a full rehearsal can trade image quality for dropped frames or buffering. AWS’s low-latency streaming configuration and OBS setup guidance provide the service-specific constraints.
Can Amazon IVS stream audio only?
No. AWS states: “Note that audio-only input is not supported for IVS low-latency streaming.” Even an audio-led concert needs a video stream. Send H.264 video alongside AAC-LC audio.
AWS documents AAC-LC audio at 96–320 Kbps, 44.1 or 48 kHz, and up to stereo for low-latency streaming. Treat those as service constraints, not a guarantee that a particular mix will sound right: test the actual instruments, microphone levels, monitoring, and sync in rehearsal. See Amazon IVS streaming configuration.

Plan playback, recording, and music rights
Give viewers a tested playback route
Verify the stream in the player you intend to use in the event page or app. The Amazon IVS player is the choice AWS identifies for the lowest low-latency playback; a third-party HLS player may add delay. Do not advertise a precise audience delay based only on the service’s headline latency category.
Choose and protect recordings
Channel recording is optional. Real-time stage participants can be recorded individually to a customer-owned S3 bucket. In either case, decide who can access recordings, how long they are retained, and how storage and requests fit the budget. Consider a local OBS recording as a separate backup rather than assuming a cloud recording will always capture the event.
Clear the music before streaming or publishing an archive
Technical setup does not establish that you have the rights to perform, synchronize, record, replay, or distribute the music. Requirements depend on the event’s jurisdiction, repertoire, venue, and distribution plan. Confirm who is responsible for each required permission before promoting the livestream, and resolve archive and replay rights separately before making a recording available.

AWS’s pricing page gives an illustrative estimate of $18.40 for a two-hour standard-channel event with an assumed North American mix of 200 viewers, each watching half the show. This is Amazon Web Services’ pricing example, checked October 3, 2026—not a quote for a different audience, geography, resolution, or watch duration. Use the current Amazon IVS pricing page and AWS pricing calculator with your event assumptions; rates can change.
Common problems and fixes
- No audio reaches the stream: confirm OBS is using the intended mixer or interface output, that the source is active and unmuted, and that the mix is routed to the selected device. Test in the IVS player rather than relying only on local monitoring.
- Audio is distorted or out of sync: check levels for clipping, verify the selected sample rate and channel configuration, and rehearse with the complete live chain. Adjust sync only after identifying where the delay enters the chain.
- Viewers report buffering or changing quality: check the encoder’s bitrate and resolution against channel limits and the available upload connection. Keep the 2-second keyframe interval as the general starting point; test any move to 1 second because it can increase adaptive-bitrate switching and buffering.
- The encoder cannot connect: verify that the channel is active, the endpoint and key match that channel, and outbound RTMPS traffic on TCP 443 is allowed. If the key may have been exposed, rotate it in the IVS console and update the encoder.
- Playback delay is higher than expected: test with the Amazon IVS player and inspect each stage of the production chain. Third-party HLS playback and viewer location can change observed latency; the service category alone does not establish a precise end-to-end delay.
- The recording is missing or incomplete: verify recording was enabled and the S3 destination and permissions were configured before the event. Keep a separate local recording if you need another copy, and do not treat recording as a substitute for a rights clearance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded concert recordings rather than a live camera-and-performer event, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not replace Amazon IVS for a live camera feed or interactive stage. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
