To host a video privately on YouTube, set its visibility to Private in YouTube Studio and save. You can then share it with selected people by email; they should follow the invitation and sign in to the account you shared it with. Choose Unlisted instead only if anyone with the video link may watch and reshare it.
Private, Unlisted, or Public: which setting should you choose?

Unlisted is not a substitute for named-viewer access: a recipient can pass its link to someone else. Private videos are not exempt from YouTube review. YouTube Help says its systems and human reviewers may review private videos for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention.

Set an existing video to Private on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Find the video and open its Visibility control.
- Select Private, then save.
After saving, the video is restricted to you and the people you explicitly share it with; it will not appear in public search results or your channel’s Videos tab.
Choose Private during upload
On the upload workflow’s Visibility page, choose Private before saving or publishing. If you close the upload window before selecting visibility, YouTube says the upload is saved as private on the Content page. Check its visibility there before sharing it.

Change visibility in the YouTube mobile app
In the YouTube or YouTube Studio app, open the video’s edit controls, tap Visibility, select Private, and save. The steps are documented for Android and iPhone or iPad; labels can vary as the apps change.
Share a Private video with selected people
- In Studio, open the video’s Visibility control.
- Select Share privately.
- Enter the viewers’ email addresses and save.
- Send invited viewers the specific video link and ask them to follow the invitation and sign in to the account you shared it with.
If someone cannot open the video, first confirm they are signed in to the invited account, then send the video link again. YouTube’s help pages say shared viewers do not need a Google Account, while its troubleshooting guidance directs viewers to sign in to YouTube with the account that received access. Avoid promising access while signed out; following the invitation and using the invited account is the safer instruction.

When to switch to Unlisted
Use Unlisted if viewers need to comment or if link-based access is more useful than selecting viewers individually—and you accept that anyone who gets the URL may watch and reshare it. Private videos cannot receive comments. To change an existing video, open its Visibility control in Studio, select Unlisted, and save.

YouTube’s legacy-content guidance says that, starting July 23, 2021, affected Unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 were made Private unless their owners opted out. Old links and embeds could therefore stop working. Open the video in Studio and check its current visibility; change it if you want link-based access again.

That legacy guidance also mentions sharing a legacy Private video with up to 50 email addresses and says recipients need a YouTube or Google account. Treat that figure as specific to the legacy-content guidance, not a universal current limit for every Private video; check the video’s available sharing controls in Studio.
