The reliable sequence is DNS first, site layout second, virtual hosts third, WordPress configuration fourth, and HTTPS last. Apache cannot create DNS records for you, so a perfectly written virtual-host file still fails if a domain does not resolve to the server.

Apache can distinguish domains that use the same IP address because browsers send the requested hostname in the HTTP Host header. Name-based virtual hosting lets Apache compare that hostname with each virtual host’s ServerName and ServerAlias, then serve files from the matching DocumentRoot.
- A DNS A record, and an AAAA record when IPv6 is enabled, points a domain to the VPS.
- The browser connects to the VPS on ports 80 or 443 and sends the hostname.
- Apache selects the virtual host whose
ServerNameor alias matches. - The selected document root supplies that site’s WordPress files.
- WordPress loads the database and generates links for that domain.
Apache describes this arrangement as simpler than assigning a separate IP to every site: DNS maps each hostname to the correct IP, and Apache recognizes the hostnames. The mapping is not automatic. “Creating virtual host configurations on your Apache server does not magically cause DNS entries to be created for those host names,” as the Apache documentation cautions.

Why a deliberate default virtual host matters
Keep one known default virtual host enabled. Requests with an unknown hostname, a missing Host header, or a typo may be handled by the first virtual host Apache reads for that listener. A default site can show a neutral landing page or return a controlled error instead of exposing one customer’s WordPress installation.
Plan the sites before installing WordPress
Decide whether the domains are independent sites or parts of one managed network before creating databases and directories. That decision affects updates, backups, permissions, and the damage an error can cause.
Use current supported server software
WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, HTTPS, and Apache or Nginx with rewrite support. Older versions may still run WordPress, but they are end of life and can leave the VPS exposed to known vulnerabilities. Install Apache, PHP with the extensions required by the WordPress release you will run, and MySQL or MariaDB from supported repositories for your operating system.
| Component | Current WordPress recommendation | Why it belongs in the plan |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | 8.3 or newer | Runs WordPress and its plugins; unsupported PHP releases increase security and compatibility risk. |
| Database | MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.11 or newer | Stores posts, settings, users, and plugin data. |
| Web server | Apache with rewrite support | Serves each document root and enables WordPress pretty permalinks. |
| Transport | HTTPS | Protects logins and satisfies WordPress’s current hosting recommendation. |
A practical directory layout
Give every independent domain a directory that is not shared with another site. For example:
/var/www/example.com/public
/var/www/second-example.net/public
/var/www/example.com/logs
/var/www/second-example.net/logs
The exact base path is your choice; what matters is that each virtual host points to the intended directory and that the Apache worker can read the files. Keep configuration files such as wp-config.php in their respective WordPress directories and protect them with normal filesystem permissions.
Separate installations or WordPress Multisite?
WordPress supports several instances with separate databases, a shared database using unique table prefixes, or one Multisite installation. Neither model is universally correct. Choose according to administrative and failure-isolation requirements rather than the number of domains alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Decision axis | Separate installations | Multisite network |
|---|---|---|
| Code and plugin management | Each site can run its own WordPress, theme, and plugin versions. | Sites share one WordPress codebase and network-level management. |
| Administrative isolation | Clear boundaries between administrators, files, credentials, and updates. | Central administration; a network-level mistake can affect multiple sites. |
| Database layout | Prefer one database and user per site; a shared database is possible with unique table prefixes. | One network database model with tables for each site. |
| Domain mapping | Each domain maps directly to its own Apache document root. | Several domains can map to sites in one directory, but DNS, Apache mapping, and Multisite settings must agree. |
| Backups and restores | Restore one site’s files and database without touching the others. | Backups and restores require network-wide planning; a shared database increases scope. |
| Update blast radius | An update normally affects only the installation being changed. | A shared core, theme, or network plugin update can affect every site. |
When separate installations are the safer default
Use separate directories, databases, and wp-config.php credentials when the domains belong to different owners, require different plugin sets, or need strict update and recovery boundaries. If one site is compromised or its database must be restored, the other sites have a clearer operational boundary.

When Multisite is a good fit
Use Multisite when the sites are managed together, should share a codebase, and benefit from network administration, shared themes, or shared plugins. WordPress defines Multisite as a feature that creates several WordPress instances managed within one installation. Domain-based networks still need DNS records and server mapping; Multisite does not bypass Apache’s virtual-host or rewrite requirements.
Multisite prerequisites on Apache
Apache Multisite deployments require mod_rewrite, working .htaccess support, and suitable AllowOverride or Directory settings. If your policy forbids AllowOverride All, translate the generated rewrite rules into the virtual-host or directory configuration instead of leaving permalinks unsupported.
Point every domain at the VPS
Create the DNS records before troubleshooting Apache. For each domain, set an A record to the VPS’s IPv4 address. Add an AAAA record only when the VPS accepts IPv6 traffic and Apache is listening on it. Repeat the process for every hostname you intend to serve, including www if it will be an alias.
- Apex domain:
example.commust resolve to the VPS. - WWW hostname:
www.example.commust resolve directly or through a CNAME that ultimately reaches the VPS. - Additional names: Any alternate hostname must be listed in DNS and in the appropriate Apache
ServerAlias.
DNS changes can be cached according to the records’ TTL. Verify the answers from more than one network before assuming Apache is at fault. A domain that resolves to an old server will consistently show the old site’s content, regardless of the new virtual-host file.
Create each WordPress site and database
For separate installations, create one database and database user per domain whenever possible. Give each user only the permissions needed for its own database. WordPress’s installer needs the database name, username, password, host, and table prefix to create wp-config.php and its tables.
- Create the document-root directory for the domain and place the WordPress files inside it.
- Create the matching database and a dedicated database user, or choose a unique table prefix if a shared database is an intentional design.
- Set filesystem ownership and permissions so Apache can read the application and WordPress can write only the directories that require writes, such as
wp-content. Use the account names and permission conventions of your Linux distribution. - Open the domain after its HTTP virtual host is active and complete the browser-based WordPress installer.
- Record the site’s database credentials and confirm that its
wp-config.phpcontains the intended database and a non-conflicting table prefix.
Do not copy a working site’s wp-config.php unchanged into another domain. Reusing the database name, credentials, or table prefix can make one site’s installer connect to another site’s data.
Build an Apache virtual host for every domain
Create one file per site in the distribution’s Apache sites directory. The following pattern uses a separate public directory and separate logs for example.com:

Duplicate the block for each domain, changing ServerName, every alias, the document root, and both log paths. Do not put two unrelated sites in the same document root. An alias should represent a hostname that is intentionally supposed to reach that same site; otherwise create another virtual host.
Enable the site and rewrite support
On Debian- and Ubuntu-style systems, the operational sequence is:
sudo a2enmod rewrite
sudo a2ensite example.com.conf
sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
Use the equivalent site-enable, module-enable, configuration-test, and reload commands on other distributions. A successful configuration test only proves that Apache can parse the files; it does not prove DNS, filesystem permissions, database credentials, or WordPress URLs are correct.
Check how Apache parsed the virtual hosts
Run:
sudo apachectl -S
This diagnostic lists listeners, virtual-host order, every ServerName and alias, and the file in which each definition appears. Confirm that each domain is attached to the intended listener and document-root configuration before opening a browser.
Install and map Multisite when you choose it
For a Multisite network, install WordPress once in the document root used by the network, enable Multisite in the WordPress administration screens, and follow the generated configuration instructions. The network’s sites can use subdomains or subdirectories; domain-based networks require each domain to resolve to the VPS and to be mapped to the corresponding site.
The Apache virtual host still needs a document root, AllowOverride or equivalent rewrite configuration, and mod_rewrite. A domain mapping error can look like a DNS problem even when DNS is correct, so verify the network’s site domain values and the Apache aliases together. Because all sites share code and administration, test core, theme, and plugin updates on the network with a current backup.
Add HTTPS to every hostname
Wait until each domain resolves to the VPS and serves the expected site over HTTP. Then use Certbot’s Apache integration to request certificates for all names. For a site that intentionally supports both apex and www, include both names in the request:

sudo certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com
Repeat for every domain, or request a certificate containing the exact set of names that should share one certificate. The certificate must cover every hostname users can enter; a certificate for the apex alone does not cover www.
Redirect only after HTTPS works
First confirm that the certificate-backed HTTPS virtual host opens the correct WordPress site and that its assets load from the HTTPS hostname. Only then enable an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect. Enabling a redirect before the certificate or HTTPS virtual host is functional can create a loop or make the site unreachable.
In each site’s WordPress settings, set both WordPress Address and Site Address to the intended HTTPS URL and hostname. Do this separately for each independent installation. In a Multisite network, verify the network and individual site addresses so that redirects do not send one domain to another.
Plan certificate renewal
Certbot’s renew action checks installed certificates for impending expiry and attempts renewal using the original plugin options. Before the first expiry, run a renewal simulation where supported and inspect the installed renewal configuration:
sudo certbot renew --dry-run
Resolve any failed challenge, DNS, or Apache reload before relying on unattended renewal. Keep port 80 reachable when the chosen challenge method requires it, and ensure every renewed certificate is attached to the correct HTTPS virtual host.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify every domain independently
Use this checklist after adding a site, changing DNS, or renewing certificates:
- Confirm A and, when applicable, AAAA answers for every domain and alias point to the VPS.
- Run
apachectl -Sand verify eachServerNameandServerAliasappears under the intended listener. - Request each domain separately over HTTP and HTTPS. Check the WordPress title, login URL, images, stylesheets, and canonical or asset URLs.
- Inspect the site’s Apache access and error logs. The request should appear in the expected log and the selected document root should match the domain.
- For separate installations, open every
wp-config.phpand confirm the intended database, credentials, and unique table prefix. - Run a Certbot renewal simulation or inspect the renewal configuration before certificates approach expiry.
- Back up databases,
wp-content,wp-config.phpfiles, Apache virtual-host files, and certificate-renewal metadata before upgrades.
Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
The wrong WordPress site appears
Check the browser’s exact hostname, DNS answers, and ServerName/ServerAlias spelling. Then run apachectl -S and inspect the access logs. If the hostname is not listed, Apache will fall back to the first virtual host for that listener. If it is listed but the wrong content appears, compare its DocumentRoot with the directory that contains the intended WordPress files.
Best Value
The domain still shows the old server
Query the A and AAAA records from the affected network. An outdated AAAA record can send IPv6 clients to a different host even when the A record is correct. Remove or correct records that do not point to this VPS, then allow DNS caches to expire.

Make sure mod_rewrite is enabled, the site’s directory allows the WordPress .htaccess rules through AllowOverride or an equivalent explicit configuration, and the virtual host has been reloaded. Confirm that the requested path belongs to the intended document root rather than a default site.
WordPress reports a database connection error
Compare the site’s wp-config.php values with the database and user created for that domain. For a shared database, verify that the table prefix is unique. A virtual host can be completely correct while WordPress fails because the application is pointing at another database or using a revoked password.
HTTPS redirects loop or assets remain on HTTP
Open the HTTPS virtual host directly and confirm its certificate and document root before enabling redirects. Then check both WordPress Address and Site Address, plugin-generated URLs, and any proxy or load-balancer settings. Ensure the certificate includes the hostname in the address bar, including www when that alias is advertised.
Renewal fails
Review the Certbot renewal configuration and the Apache error log, then run the renewal simulation again. Common causes in this architecture are a domain no longer resolving to the VPS, a missing alias in the HTTPS virtual host, or a challenge request being redirected to the wrong site.
Backups and update boundaries
Back up each database and the files that make the site reproducible: wp-content, wp-config.php, Apache virtual-host files, and certificate-renewal metadata. Test that a database dump and a file backup can be restored, not merely that a backup job reports success.
Separate installations let you restore or roll back one domain without restoring the others. In Multisite, plan for the shared database and codebase: a network restore can affect every site, and a plugin or core update has a wider blast radius. In either model, take a backup before WordPress, PHP, database, or plugin upgrades.
A repeatable rollout order
For each new domain, follow the same order: create DNS records, choose its independent installation or Multisite placement, create the directory and database model, install WordPress, add and enable the Apache virtual host, run apachectl configtest and apachectl -S, test the site over HTTP, issue the certificate, enable HTTPS and only then redirect HTTP, and finally perform the domain-by-domain and backup checks. This sequence keeps DNS, Apache routing, WordPress data, and certificates testable as separate layers.
