How to Host Heavy Windows Desktop Applications Remotely for Smooth Remote Team Operations

Run graphics-heavy Windows applications on central session hosts and deliver them over RDP. Compare Azure Virtual Desktop with self-managed Remote Desktop Services, then plan GPU use, sizing, and shared-session trust.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the heavy application on a Windows session host in Azure or in your own data center, and let each team member connect to it over Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) from an ordinary laptop. The application, its data, and most of its processing stay on the host, while the user’s device receives the screen and sends input back. Whether that feels smooth depends on three decisions: which platform you use, whether the host has a supported GPU path for graphics-heavy work, and how many people share each host.

The two platform options are Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), a managed Azure desktop and app virtualization service, and Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS), which you deploy on premises or on Azure virtual machines. Microsoft’s documentation establishes what each platform can do. It does not show how your application will perform on your network, so treat the design below as something to prove with a pilot before you commit.

How a remote session divides the work

The application runs on a session host, a virtual machine your users sign in to. Data processing happens there unless the application itself offloads work to the endpoint. RDP then encodes the rendered graphics on the remote VM and delivers them to the device, according to Microsoft’s supported configurations for Remote Desktop Services.

  • Execution: the Windows application runs on the session host and draws its interface there.
  • Encoding: the host compresses the rendered frames. CPU encoding competes with other work on the VM, and GPU encoding can move that work off the CPU.
  • Transport: frames travel to the device and input travels back, so bandwidth, latency, and packet loss all shape what the user sees.
  • Display: the endpoint decodes and draws the frames, so a weak client can be the bottleneck even when the host is healthy.

Choosing between Azure Virtual Desktop and self-managed RDS

The table compares the two platforms on the axes that matter most for heavy applications. Both support session-based delivery, but they differ in who operates the platform and where the session hosts run.

Full desktop or a single RemoteApp program

A full desktop suits teams that switch between several tools, rely on shared files and plug-ins, or need a personal working environment. Publishing an individual RemoteApp program suits a team whose job centers on one heavy application.

Single-session, multi-session, pooled, or personal

  • Single-session hosts give one user a VM. Performance is more predictable for that user, but cost per person is higher.
  • Multi-session hosts let several users share one Windows server. Per-user overhead falls, but one demanding user can affect neighbors, so density works only when workloads are similar and users trust one another.
  • Pooled desktops hand a shared image to whichever user signs in next.
  • Personal persistent desktops keep each user’s own environment, which suits applications that need local customization, at the cost of more management per user.

Graphics: when you need a GPU and how to switch it on

Microsoft’s session host sizing guidance states:

“Some workloads, such as graphics-intensive applications for video rendering, 3D design, and simulations or virtual desktops with high-resolution displays, might require dedicated GPUs to ensure optimal performance.”

Its acceleration guidance for AVD adds a default that surprises many administrators:

“By default, Azure Virtual Desktop remote sessions are rendered with the CPU and don’t use available GPUs.”

A GPU in the host therefore does nothing by itself. Acceleration needs a supported driver and explicit configuration, as the steps below describe.

  1. Classify the workload. Video rendering, 3D design, simulation, and high-resolution virtual desktops are the cases Microsoft names. Measure the real application rather than assuming office-style density figures apply to expert 3D users.
  2. Define the display load. Add up the total endpoint display resolution each session drives and compare it with the 3840 × 2160 threshold in the sizing table below.
  3. Choose a host family and driver you can verify. In AVD, select from the GPU-optimized Azure VM families Microsoft documents. For the Azure N-series use Microsoft describes, only Azure-distributed drivers are supported. On NVIDIA sizes, NVIDIA GRID drivers rather than CUDA drivers support acceleration for most applications and the Windows UI. Confirm these details at deployment time, because support changes.
  4. Enable GPU rendering and/or remote frame encoding. Both are configured through Intune or Group Policy and are separately controllable, so enable the one your workload needs and test both if you are unsure.
  5. Restart the session hosts. Policy changes take effect only after a restart.
  6. Verify with the production application. Open real files under typical team load and compare end-to-end response and visual quality with the CPU-rendered baseline.

If you plan to use HEVC/H.265, Microsoft lists separate requirements for the described AVD configuration, covering the session host, the desktop application group, the client GPU, the codec, and the client version. Do not assume that every client or RemoteApp arrangement supports it. See Enable GPU acceleration for Azure Virtual Desktop.

Self-hosted RDS and physical GPUs

With RDS you can present GPUs to physical session hosts, and Microsoft also documents supported VMs for this purpose. Two checks come before you buy hardware. GPU vendors may apply separate licensing to RDSH use, and they may restrict which server operating systems are permitted. Confirm the host model, the application, the driver, and the vendor terms in writing first. Relevant background is in the Remote Desktop Services overview and the Desktop Hosting Reference Architecture.

Sizing and the performance numbers to know

Microsoft describes its sizing examples as generic initial estimates and advises scaling them to real user needs. It highlights end-to-end session response time as a more direct measure of experience than server utilization alone. The figures most often quoted in this area each carry a limit:

Figure What Microsoft says Limit of the claim
Endpoint display total above 3840 × 2160 On CPU-only hosts, RDP encoding shares CPU time with other VM processes. At endpoint display totals above 3840 × 2160, that contention can cause graphical artifacts, freezes, and cache corruption. Source: sizing guidance (undated page). A diagnostic threshold in that guidance, not a promise that a GPU fixes every problem.
Less than 200 milliseconds for user actions Microsoft describes this as what users generally expect for response time. Source: sizing guidance (undated page). Not a service-level guarantee or a universal acceptance threshold.
5 to 5000 users The Desktop Hosting Reference Architecture (undated page) discusses desktop hosting across this tenant-size range. Its design is based on Windows Server 2016-era architecture, and larger tenants may need architectural changes. Use it as a design input, not as current capacity sizing.

Measure end-to-end input response under the concurrent load you plan to run. A single user’s session at a quiet hour tells you little about the peak period when the whole team is working.

Security and trust in shared sessions

Multi-session hosts are efficient only when everyone on a host can be trusted at a comparable level. Microsoft advises against placing users from different or competing organizations in the same multi-session environment. If you must support separate organizations, Microsoft’s guidance considers separate identity tenants and subscriptions. For a single organization whose users have standard privileges, multi-session can be appropriate. The security recommendations for Azure Virtual Desktop cover these scenarios.

RemoteApp is also not a control on what users can run. Microsoft states:

“RemoteApp isn’t a security feature, and its use doesn’t prevent the launch of applications beyond those applications published to an application group.”

Do not rely on a published application list alone to keep users inside approved software. Avoid giving users administrator rights on shared pools, because a user with local admin rights on a shared host can change settings that affect everyone on it.

Gateway and sign-in for self-hosted RDS

For self-hosted RDS, the gateway can encapsulate RDP over HTTPS and integrate with multi-factor authentication and conditional access, as described in the Remote Desktop Services overview. Those integrations still depend on certificates, access controls, correct role configuration, and ongoing operations, all of which you own.
