What a Windows gaming VPS is—and what it is not
A Windows gaming VPS is a virtual machine rented from a hosting provider. It runs a licensed Windows installation, has allocated virtual CPU and RAM, uses virtual SSD storage, and normally includes a public IPv4 address. You administer it remotely, usually with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), and install the dedicated-server software yourself.
The VPS is not a game-server application by itself. It supplies the operating environment and network connection; the game’s dedicated-server package supplies the world simulation, save files, player slots and game-specific ports. A plan that looks powerful on paper can still perform poorly if its storage is slow, its CPU is oversubscribed, or its provider blocks inbound traffic.

Why players use a VPS
- Persistent availability: the world can stay online when your personal computer is shut down.

When a VPS is a poor fit
A VPS is less attractive when you only play occasionally, need a large modded community but have little time for maintenance, or require hardware-level GPU rendering. Size the VPS before you install anything

For Palworld, the 16 GB figure is a recommendation, not a guarantee for every player count or mod set. Allocate additional memory if your world, plugins or concurrent users demand it. For Valheim, obtain the current requirements for the server build you intend to run; the cited guide establishes the default ports and backend behavior, not a universal RAM or CPU number.
Storage is part of performance and reliability
Use SSD-backed storage and leave free space for world saves, temporary update files, crash dumps and logs. Palworld’s version 0.5.0 requirements specifically warn that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. Keep live saves in a stable directory outside a temporary SteamCMD download folder, and monitor disk usage because a full volume can stop saves or prevent updates.
Choose networking and provider features deliberately
Before ordering, confirm that the plan includes a public address, allows inbound UDP traffic, exposes provider-level firewall or security-group controls, and states how Windows licensing is handled. Snapshots or backup storage are valuable, but a snapshot on the same underlying system is not a substitute for a separate backup. Review the provider’s DDoS mitigation and abuse policies so you know what protection and limits actually apply.

- The provider firewall or security group receives traffic before it reaches the virtual machine.
- Windows Firewall applies its own inbound rules inside the VPS.
A rule in only one layer is insufficient. Open the provider rule first, then create a matching Windows rule. Permit only the documented game, query or RCON ports. Never use an unrestricted “any port, any source” rule for a public server.
Why home-router port forwarding is usually unnecessary
Your home router is not in the connection path when the server runs on a VPS. Friends use the VPS’s public address, so there is no residential NAT rule to configure. Remote administration is different: RDP should be limited to trusted source addresses or reached through a VPN. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop documentation identifies port forwarding and VPN as the two broad ways to reach a private machine; a public VPS normally needs neither home-router forwarding nor an exposed, unrestricted RDP service.

Step-by-step: deploy the server on Windows
1. Select a plan with measurable headroom
- Identify the dedicated-server build, supported Windows edition and published CPU, RAM, storage and network requirements.
- Add capacity for Windows background services, mods, world growth and your expected peak player count.
- Confirm SSD-backed storage, a public IP, administrator access and the ability to create inbound UDP rules.
- Check backup, snapshot, DDoS and Windows-licensing terms before paying. Record the plan’s resource limits and renewal conditions for other administrators.
2. Create the machine and secure administration
- Deploy the Windows VPS and save its public address, administrator account details and recovery information in a secure password manager.
- Connect with RDP for initial setup. Apply Windows updates and reboot when required.
- Restrict RDP in the provider firewall and Windows Firewall to trusted source addresses, or place administration behind a VPN. Do not leave management access open to the entire Internet.
- Use a long, unique administrator credential. Create a separate low-privilege account for routine work when the game’s installer permits it.

3. Install the dedicated-server files
Use the game’s official dedicated-server tool or SteamCMD deployment instructions. Steam’s graphical client can be convenient for a one-off installation; SteamCMD is better suited to repeatable updates and scripted deployment. Download into a permanent server directory, not a temporary folder, and preserve the path in your documentation.

4. Configure identity, worlds and startup options
Before first launch, decide where the world and logs will live and make that location easy to back up. Configure the options exposed by the game’s server files or startup arguments:

- World or save name.
- Password and any player-limit setting.
- Public visibility, query behavior and authentication options.
- Game-specific flags for crossplay, mods, logging or performance.
Keep configuration and saves on the VPS’s persistent data volume. Separate them from downloaded installers so an update or reinstallation cannot accidentally remove the world. Document every non-default argument, the save path and the Windows account that runs the process.
5. Open the required ports in both firewalls
- In the provider control panel, create an inbound rule for the game’s documented protocol and port. Limit the source range when the game supports a private community or allow-list.
- Inside Windows, create a matching inbound rule in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security. Select the correct protocol (UDP or TCP), local port and network profiles.
- Add separate rules only when the game documents query, RCON or crossplay ports. Keep administrative ports such as RDP restricted to trusted addresses.
- Record the rules and their purpose so an administrator can remove obsolete entries after a game change.
Examples from the cited documentation are UDP 8211 for Palworld and UDP 2456–2457 for a Valheim Steam-backend server. Steam’s support material lists UDP remote ports 27000–27250 for game traffic, but that is not a universal instruction to open every port in the range; the exact set is title-specific.

6. Start the process and verify reachability
- Launch the game server manually once and watch its console or log for bind errors, missing files, authentication failures and save-path messages.
- On the VPS, verify that the process is running and listening on the expected port with Windows networking tools such as
netstat -anoor PowerShell’s connection cmdlets. Match the listening process to the server executable. - Check the provider rule and Windows Firewall rule again, including protocol and port. A TCP rule does not permit UDP traffic.
- From a player’s machine outside the VPS network, connect using the public address and game port. Test from an independent network rather than assuming that a local connection proves Internet reachability.
- If the game offers a server browser, confirm that the name, visibility and player limit match your configuration.
Do not advertise the server as reachable until an external player has connected. A process that is running locally can still be blocked upstream or bound to the wrong interface.
7. Make the server persistent
A server launched in an RDP window can stop when the session ends or when an update interrupts it. Use a restart policy or a service wrapper that starts the process after boot, restarts it after an unexpected exit and writes logs to a known directory. Windows Task Scheduler can provide a simple boot-triggered task: configure the server executable or batch file as the action, choose an account with access to the save directory, and enable restart behavior for failures. Test a controlled stop and reboot so you know the world returns without manual RDP work.
8. Build backups and a recovery path
- Stop the server cleanly before copying live world files. A running process may still be writing a save, leaving an inconsistent backup.
- Copy worlds, configuration and any required mod list to storage separate from the live VPS disk.
- Keep multiple restore points so a bad update or corrupted save does not overwrite your only copy.
- Periodically restore a copy to a test directory or second machine. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
- Record the startup command, save path, ports, public address and restore steps for another administrator.
Game-specific notes
Valheim
Iron Gate’s 2024 guidance describes a dedicated server as a way to provide a persistent world for friends. With the Steam backend, the default range is UDP 2456–2457 and the server needs direct Internet access. Open that range in both firewall layers and ensure the VPS has a public address.
Valheim’s Crossplay backend relays traffic, so router port forwarding is not required. The port still distinguishes multiple servers sharing one public IP. Choose one backend intentionally: changing it can alter how players discover and join the world, so document the selected mode alongside the startup file.

Palworld
Pocketpair’s requirements for version 0.5.0 specify Windows 64-bit, at least four recommended CPU cores, 16 GB recommended memory and faster SSD storage. The default game port documented for the dedicated server is UDP 8211. Pocketpair documents Windows Steam-client and SteamCMD installation, as well as Linux and Docker alternatives; this guide uses the Windows path.
After downloading with SteamCMD, launch PalServer.exe, confirm that it creates its configuration and save directories, then set the server name, password, player limit and any documented startup flags. Because the requirements warn about low-performance storage, treat SSD latency and free space as reliability concerns rather than optional upgrades.
Operate the VPS safely after launch
Patch in a controlled order
Keep Windows and the server software current, but take a restorable world backup before major updates. Schedule maintenance when players are offline, stop the server cleanly, apply the update, start it under the normal restart policy and inspect the logs before reopening the server to everyone.
Monitor the four resources that fail first
- CPU: sustained saturation can cause simulation lag and delayed saves.
- Memory: watch for growth after adding mods or players; Windows paging is not a substitute for adequate RAM.
- Disk: world saves, logs and update files grow over time. Keep free space available.
- Network: check packet loss, provider limits and unusual inbound traffic, not just total bandwidth.
Set an alert or at least a regular review schedule. A server that works on launch day can fail later when a world, log directory or backup archive fills the disk.
Keep an administrator runbook
Store the public address, game and management ports, startup file, save location, update procedure, backup destination and recovery test date in one document. Include which firewall layer owns each rule and who can change it. This prevents a second administrator from opening broad ports or deleting the wrong directory during an emergency.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The process runs, but nobody can join
- Confirm the player is using the VPS public address, not a private Windows address.
- Verify the game’s protocol and port in the server configuration.
- Check the provider security group first, then the Windows inbound rule.
- Confirm the server is listening on the expected interface and that no second process is using the port.
- Test from a network outside the VPS provider; a local test can bypass the failure.
Players connect but experience lag or disconnects
- Review CPU and memory usage during a busy period.

The world will not save or an update broke it
Stop the process, preserve the current files, and compare the save path with the path documented in your startup configuration. Restore a known-good backup to a separate directory before replacing the live world. Do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting with a new build or mod.
RDP is exposed or unreliable
Restrict the provider and Windows RDP rules to trusted source addresses or route administration through a VPN. Keep the game port separate from management access. If you lose access after changing a rule, use the provider’s console or recovery feature rather than opening every port permanently.
