How to Host an FTB Architect’s Exodus Server

A practical, version-aware guide to hosting an FTB Architect's Exodus server: select the matching release, install the official files, configure Java and memory, accept the EULA, and let friends connect safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host Architect’s Exodus from FTB’s official server files rather than copying a client installation. Choose one pack release (the FTB page captured for this guide lists pack ID 127 and version ID 100498), install it with Java 17, allocate at least 6 GB of server memory (8 GB is FTB’s recommendation), accept the EULA, and then expose the server only to the players you trust. The same release must be selected by every client.

What you need before starting

Prepare the machine and the information below before downloading anything:

  • A Windows, macOS or Linux computer that can stay on while others play.
  • Enough free storage for the installer, mod files, world data, logs and backups. The official documentation does not publish a fixed disk-space number, so leave substantial headroom rather than filling the drive.
  • Permission to create folders, run programs and change firewall rules on the computer.
  • A stable local network for players in your home, or control of the router and firewall if friends will connect over the internet.
  • A decision about whether you will administer the operating system yourself or use a managed Minecraft host.

FTB’s 2026 pack information identifies Architect’s Exodus with Minecraft 1.20.1 tags, Java 17, a 6 GB minimum allocation and an 8 GB recommendation. Those figures describe the modpack server, not the total memory your computer needs: the operating system, the launcher and other services require their own memory.

1. Select one exact Architect’s Exodus release

Open the Architect’s Exodus versions or server-files page on Feed The Beast and record the pack and version identifiers shown for the release you intend to run. The page captured for this article lists pack ID 127 and version ID 100498 as the latest version shown in 2026. FTB can publish a newer version later, so use the identifiers currently displayed on the page when you set up a new server.

  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

Write the chosen version down before installing. Every player must select that same pack release in the FTB launcher; mixing releases commonly produces missing-mod, registry or connection errors. Pinning a known version is preferable when you value a stable world over immediately taking every update.

2. Download the official server installer

Use FTB’s generated server-files download for the release you recorded. Do not assemble a server by copying the client folder: the server package contains the files and startup arrangement intended for dedicated use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the installer for the operating system

  • Windows: choose the AMD64 build for most Intel- or AMD-based PCs. Choose the Arm build only when Windows is running on an ARM computer.
  • macOS: select the Intel/AMD download for an Intel Mac and the Arm download for Apple silicon.
  • Linux: use the build matching the machine’s processor architecture and run it from a terminal.

The server-files page can display a generated command containing the pack and version. Keep the installer filename exactly as downloaded. FTB warns that the filename identifies the pack and version; renaming it can prevent the installer from selecting the intended files.

3. Create a dedicated installation folder

Keep the server in its own directory, separate from the FTB client and unrelated Minecraft worlds. A dedicated folder makes backups, permissions and upgrades predictable.

  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

  1. Create a new folder such as FTB-Architects-Exodus-Server on a drive with adequate free space.
  2. Move the downloaded installer into that folder without changing its name.
  3. On Windows, open the folder in File Explorer and run the installer. Approve the security prompt only after confirming that the file came from FTB.
  4. On macOS or Linux, open a terminal in the folder, make the installer executable if the operating system requires it, and run it from that directory.
  5. Allow the installer to download and extract the modpack files. Keep the terminal open until it reports completion; interrupting extraction can leave a partial installation.

FTB’s server guide describes the installer as the tool that downloads and extracts the modpack files. After it finishes, the directory should contain the server libraries, configuration files and a generated startup launcher.

4. Check Java and memory before the first launch

Item FTB information How to apply it
Java Java 17 Use a Java 17 runtime for the server process. A different major version can cause startup or mod-loading failures.
Minimum server memory 6 GB Treat this as the floor for the modpack process, not as the total memory required by the computer.
Recommended server memory 8 GB Use this when the machine has enough spare memory after reserving resources for the operating system and other services.
Pack identifiers in the captured 2026 listing Pack 127; version 100498 Pass the same identifiers to the installer and select the matching release in each client.
Minecraft tag shown by FTB 1.20.1 Use the Minecraft version supplied by the selected pack release; do not substitute a vanilla server jar.

The installer can download an appropriate Java runtime unless the administrator disables that behavior with its no-Java option. If you provide Java yourself, verify that the executable is Java 17 before troubleshooting mods. On a computer with 16 GB of total RAM, allocating the recommended amount can be a sensible starting point for a small private server, provided the operating system still has comfortable headroom. FTB publishes no guaranteed player count, CPU requirement or TPS result, so increase resources only after observing the server under your actual workload.

5. Run the installer and generated startup script

FTB’s installer README documents this command form:

./serverinstaller -pack <pack_id> -version <version_id>

For the identifiers in the captured listing, the equivalent Linux or macOS command is:

  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
./serverinstaller -pack 127 -version 100498

Use the generated Windows launcher rather than translating that Unix command into an arbitrary batch file. On Windows the installation normally creates run.bat; on macOS and Linux, execute the generated startup script from the installation directory.

Useful installer controls

  • Explicit version selection: supply the pack and version IDs when reproducibility matters.
  • Latest-release selection: let the installer choose the current release when you intentionally want the newest files.
  • Automatic mode: useful for unattended setup, but review the selected release before allowing it to replace a working world.
  • Download validation: run validation when a download appears incomplete or files fail checksum checks.
  • Thread configuration: adjust download parallelism for a slow or heavily shared connection.
  • Verbose output: enable it when the installer exits without making clear which step failed.

6. Accept the Minecraft EULA and complete first launch

  1. Run run.bat on Windows or the generated startup script on macOS/Linux once.
  2. Wait for the process to stop or report that the EULA must be accepted.
  3. Open eula.txt in the server folder, read the linked Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance setting as required by the file.
  4. Save the file without changing its name or extension.
  5. Start the same launcher again and watch the console until the server reports that it is ready for connections.

Keep the world, configuration files, libraries and logs together in the installation directory. Before inviting players, stop the server cleanly and make a restorable copy of that directory. A backup made while files are changing can be inconsistent, so schedule copies when the server is stopped or use a backup method designed for live worlds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Let players connect

Players on the same computer

When the game and server run on one machine, connect with localhost and the port configured by the server. This path avoids router configuration and is useful for confirming that the installation works before opening access to anyone else.

Players on the same home network

Give local players the server computer’s private network address and the port shown in the server configuration. Permit the Java/server process through the operating system firewall on the appropriate network profile. A private address normally works only inside that home network; it is not the address an internet player should use.

  • Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
  • Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
  • Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more

Friends connecting from outside

  1. Confirm that the server listens on the intended interface and port in its configuration.
  2. Create a router port-forwarding rule from that port to the server computer’s private address.
  3. Allow the same port through the computer’s firewall.
  4. Give friends the home’s reachable public address and the configured port, not the private LAN address.
  5. Test from a network outside the home, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside can give a false impression when the router lacks hairpin support.

Router menus, carrier-grade NAT and ISP policies differ, so there is no universal forwarding procedure. If the ISP does not provide a reachable public address, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a network solution that supplies inbound reachability or choose managed hosting instead. Never publish the server address broadly, and whitelist players or use the server’s access controls where appropriate.

8. Backups, updates and safe administration

Back up the files that matter

  • Stop the server before making a simple file copy.
  • Back up the world folders, server.properties, configuration directories, permissions/whitelist files and any scripts you edited.
  • Keep at least one copy on another drive or computer. A second copy in the same failing drive is not disaster recovery.
  • Label backups with the pack version and date so you can restore a compatible set.

Update deliberately

Do not replace a running world with an untested latest release. Record the current version, make a full backup, install the new files in a separate directory, and test the copy before switching players over. Keep the old directory until the new release has run successfully and you have confirmed that the world and configurations load as expected.

Limit operating-system exposure

Run the server under a normal user account where practical, keep the operating system and Java runtime patched, and expose only the game port required for players. Administrative panels, remote shells and file shares should not be opened to the public internet merely because the Minecraft port is reachable.

9. Troubleshoot in a fixed order

Symptom Checks Likely corrective action
Installer stops or downloads incomplete files Confirm the installer was not renamed, the folder is writable, storage is available and the network stayed connected. Run the installer again with validation and verbose output; remove only demonstrably partial files if the installer documentation directs you to do so.
Server exits before loading mods Read the first error in the console and log, then verify Java 17 and the selected pack/version IDs. Use the generated launcher, correct the Java runtime, or reinstall the exact official server files rather than adding client-only files.
Clients report missing mods or registry mismatches Compare the client’s Architect’s Exodus release with the server’s recorded version. Install the identical release on the client or deliberately move both sides to a tested version.
Local connection works but internet connection fails Check the server computer’s firewall, router forwarding target, listening port and whether the ISP supplies a reachable public address. Correct the forwarding/firewall rule, test from an external network, or use managed hosting when inbound access is unavailable.
Lag, pauses or out-of-memory errors Review the server log, memory allocation, operating-system free memory and background programs. Close competing workloads, ensure the server has at least the pack’s stated minimum, move toward the recommended allocation if headroom permits, and avoid promising a player capacity the official documentation does not define.

When asking for help, include the exact pack and version IDs, Java major version, operating system, the first relevant error and whether the failure affects local, LAN or internet connections. A complete log is more useful than a screenshot of the final line.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Running the server yourself gives you direct access to files and logs, but you also own every maintenance task. A managed provider can remove much of the operating-system and network work; verify that it supports the exact Architect’s Exodus release before paying.

Decision factor Self-hosted machine Managed host
Cost model Uses hardware and electricity you already have; upgrades are your expense. Recurring fee; current price and regional taxes vary by provider.
Network quality Depends on your upload bandwidth, latency and ISP policy. Provider supplies the data-center connection, subject to its location and plan.
Resources You choose CPU, memory and storage, but must leave room for the operating system. Plan limits define available memory, CPU share and storage; check them against the pack’s requirements.
Backups and restores You design, schedule and test them. Some plans offer automated backups; confirm retention, restore access and download rights.
Updates and files You control versions and can inspect every log and configuration. The panel may simplify updates but can hide files or restrict custom changes.
Network protection You configure the router and firewall and absorb home-connection outages. The provider may include data-center monitoring or DDoS mitigation; read the actual service limits.

Choose self-hosting when you want full control and can maintain a reachable machine. Choose managed hosting when uptime, router limitations or administration time matter more than owning the underlying system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware upgrade note

If the computer cannot reserve the server’s required memory, a “16GB DDR4 desktop RAM kit” is only a description, not a universal fit. Confirm the motherboard’s supported DDR generation and maximum capacity, and match desktop DIMMs versus laptop SODIMMs. Leave memory for the operating system after the upgrade; installing a module that physically fits but uses the wrong generation or exceeds the board’s limits will not solve the server problem.
