To host an All the Mods 9 (ATM9) server, use the Server Files archive for the exact ATM9 release, run it on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, and use Java 17. Allocate at least 6 GB of memory; 8 GB is a sensible starting point and 10 GB gives more headroom as players load chunks or build automation. You can run the server on a home computer with the supplied Windows or Linux scripts, or upload the extracted files to a managed host.

What ATM9 is and what must match
All the Mods 9 is a large Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. The CurseForge project listing describes more than 400 loaded mods, a quest system and an endgame. The listing displayed release 1.1.1 on October 12, 2025; select the release you actually intend to run rather than assuming the newest file is compatible with an existing world. The project page showed 13,655,389 downloads when accessed on October 14, 2026, but popularity does not remove the need to pin an exact version.
Every participant should install the same ATM9 client release as the server’s Server Files archive. Do not combine a newer client with an older server, or substitute a vanilla, Fabric or NeoForge installation for the Forge pack.

The ATM server guide’s example configuration contains mcVersion: 1.20.1, loaderVersion: 47.3.7, supportedJavaVersions: [17], minRam: 4 and maxRam: 8. Those are versioned example values, not a promise that every later ATM9 archive uses the same loader or memory limits. Inspect the archive and its documentation before deploying.
Decide between a home computer and a managed host
Both approaches run the same server files. The choice is mainly about administration, network access and who is responsible for recovery.

Choose local hosting if you want direct access to every file, are comfortable maintaining backups and can keep the computer online. Choose a managed service if you prefer a control panel, automated installation or a data-center connection. Neither option has a source-backed player-capacity guarantee; CPU speed, storage, view distance, chunk loading, automation and the number of simultaneous players all affect the result.
Download the correct ATM9 Server Files archive
- Open the All the Mods 9 project in CurseForge.
- Select the exact ATM9 release you want to run. Record its displayed version so you can give clients the same version.
- Open Files, then Additional Files, and choose the matching Server Files download.
- Save the archive to a location where you can verify and extract it. Do not treat a client profile’s mods folder as a server installation.
- Extract the entire archive into a new, dedicated server directory. Keep the directory structure supplied by the pack; scripts depend on files being in their expected locations.
A managed panel may let you upload the zip and extract it in its file manager, but the end state must still contain the complete extracted server tree. If an upload omits a directory, the launch script can fail before Forge starts or the server can appear to start without the required mods.
Prepare a reliable local server directory
Windows
Create a dedicated folder outside cloud-synchronised locations. The ATM guide specifically advises avoiding OneDrive or another cloud-synced directory, where file locking and partial synchronisation can corrupt a running world or prevent scripts from writing. Give your Windows account read and write access to the folder, and keep the path simple so that log and script errors are easy to read.

Linux
Use a directory owned by the account that will run the server. Confirm that account can read, write and create files throughout the extracted tree. The shell script must be executable; from the server directory run:

Install and select Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime supported by your operating system. Check the runtime visible to the account that launches the server with:
java -versionIf the output is not Java 17, or if several Java installations are present, do not assume the operating system’s default is suitable. Set the Java path explicitly in the launch script or in the host panel’s runtime selector. The ATM guide warns that java -version can expose a different default than the one you intended to use; the important test is the Java executable that the server process actually invokes.
Start ATM9 on Windows
- Finish extracting the Server Files archive into the dedicated folder.
- Confirm Java 17 is selected for the account that will launch the process.
- Double-click
startserver.bat, or run it from a Command Prompt opened in that folder. - Read the first-run messages. The pack’s scripts create or request configuration files and present the EULA/configuration prompts required before normal operation.
- Complete those prompts using the files and instructions produced by the archive, then start the script again if it closes after setup.
- Leave the server process running while testing a client with the identical ATM9 release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge installation.
The supplied script is preferable to inventing a custom Java command because it carries the pack’s expected arguments and setup behavior. If the window closes immediately, launch the batch file from Command Prompt so the error remains visible, then check Java selection, missing files and the log output.

Start ATM9 on Linux
- Change to the extracted server directory.
- Make the script executable if necessary:
chmod +x startserver.sh. - Launch it with
./startserver.sh. - Follow the first-run EULA and configuration prompts generated by the pack.
- After setup, run the script again if the first invocation stopped to create files.
- Connect with a client on the exact same ATM9 release and verify that the server account can continue writing to the world and logs.
If the shell reports permission denied, recheck the execute bit and directory ownership. If it reports that Java cannot be found, use an explicit Java 17 path or correct the service account’s environment rather than installing a second, unselected runtime.
Install ATM9 on a managed host
One-click installation
Many game hosts expose a modpack installer. In the panel, choose All the Mods 9 and the exact release, select a plan and region, enter the server details, and complete payment if required. CurseForge’s hosted-server flow describes five stages: choose the modpack, choose a plan, choose a region, enter server details and pay. The service documentation says its hosted feature is powered by a third-party provider and billed through a payment platform; verify current terms, region availability, backups and Java selection before purchase.
Manual upload
- Create or select a Forge server instance in the host panel.
- Set the Minecraft and Forge versions to those required by the selected ATM9 release.
- Upload the extracted Server Files tree through FTP, SFTP or the panel’s file manager. If the panel accepts only archives, upload the zip and extract it on the server.
- Place files at the instance root expected by the panel, not inside an extra directory created by the archive extraction.
- Select Java 17 in the panel and set the startup target to the pack’s supplied script or the host’s documented Forge entry point.
- Start the instance, watch the console for first-run EULA/configuration prompts, and stop it if the panel reports missing files or a version mismatch.
Some panels require a custom jar rather than a modpack installer. The ATM guide’s ATM9 example uses Forge 47.3.7 and a server-setup-config.yaml containing:

maxRam: 8Use those values only when they match the archive you selected. For a different ATM9 release, adapt mcVersion and loaderVersion to that release’s documented values. The example’s minimum and maximum are configuration hints from that guide, not proof that 4 GB will run a modern ATM9 world comfortably.
Complete first-run configuration safely
On the first launch, the scripts create configuration and world files and stop or pause for the EULA and other required settings. Follow the prompt generated by your archive; the cited guide does not specify a universal EULA command, so do not paste an unverified command from a different pack.

After the server reaches a normal running state, stop it cleanly before editing files. Review server.properties for the gameplay and network settings you intend to use, and keep a copy of any changes. Give clients the same modpack version and any required server address or connection details. Test with one client before inviting more players so a missing mod or configuration mismatch is easier to isolate.
Network considerations for a home server
A local server must remain powered on and reachable from the players who need it. Router, firewall and ISP behavior differ, so use your network equipment’s documentation for port-forwarding and inbound-firewall procedures. The supplied sources do not establish a universal port, ISP capability or connectivity guarantee; record the address and rules that work for your own network and protect the machine with normal account and firewall hygiene.
Choose a practical memory allocation
The official ATM server guide lists a server with at least 6 GB of allocated RAM as a prerequisite for most ATM packs. A separate All The Mods download table lists 8 GB minimum and 10 GB recommended for ATM9. Use these figures as planning guidance, not as a guarantee of a particular player count or tick rate.
- 6 GB: the documented floor. It leaves less room for large bases, many loaded chunks or heavy automation.
- 8 GB: a practical starting allocation for a small, carefully managed server and the ATM9 table’s minimum.
- 10 GB: the table’s recommendation and a sensible direction when exploration, chunk loading, machines or simultaneous players increase.
Allocate memory to the server process, not all physical memory in the computer. Leave the operating system, Java overhead, backups and other services enough RAM to function. Increase allocation only after checking logs and observed behavior; more memory cannot correct a wrong Java version, an incomplete upload or a mismatched mod list.
The example minRam: 4 and maxRam: 8 in the server setup YAML should not be read as an ATM9 performance guarantee. The practical 8–10 GB range above comes from the separate ATM9 download guidance and should be adjusted for your workload.

Update ATM9 without destroying the world
- Stop the server cleanly and make a restorable backup of the entire world directory before changing pack files.
- Keep copies of
world,server.properties,eula.txt, customized scripts and any configuration you changed. - Download the Server Files archive for the target ATM9 release and extract it into a separate staging directory.
- Replace the pack-managed directories called out by the ATM guide, including
kubejs,defaultconfigs,modsandconfig. - Copy your preserved server-specific files and modifications into the new installation, resolving conflicts deliberately rather than overwriting blindly.
- Start the new version with the supplied script and watch the console for missing-mod, Forge or Java errors.
- Join with a client on the same target release. If the world behaves incorrectly, stop the server and restore the pre-update backup instead of continuing to write to a suspect world.
Never update by deleting the whole directory and copying only the world back. That approach can lose server properties, EULA state, scripts and custom configuration that the running world expects.
Troubleshoot the failures most likely to occur
The server refuses a client connection
Compare the client and server ATM9 release, Minecraft version, Forge loader and mod files. A client that is merely close to the server version is still incompatible. Reinstall the matching client profile rather than adding or removing individual mods at random.
Forge or the script reports an unsupported Java runtime
Check the Java executable used by the launch process, not only the version installed on the machine. Select Java 17 explicitly in the host panel or launch script, then restart. Remove ambiguity caused by multiple Java installations and service accounts with different environment variables.
The process exits during startup or the world is unstable
Confirm that the machine meets the 6 GB floor and begin around 8 GB, moving toward 10 GB for heavier workloads. Check that the operating system has free memory and that the archive was extracted completely. Memory cannot compensate for missing files or a loader mismatch.
Linux says permission denied
Run chmod +x startserver.sh, verify ownership and ensure the account can write to the server directory. Launch with ./startserver.sh from that directory.

The host starts an empty or incomplete installation
Inspect the remote directory after upload. Ensure the full extracted tree is present and that extraction did not create an unwanted extra top-level folder. If the host accepted a zip, extract it in the panel and confirm that mods, config, kubejs, defaultconfigs and the launch files are in the instance root.
Windows files behave strangely after an update
Move the server out of OneDrive or another cloud-synchronised folder, restore the backup made before the update, and perform the replacement in a local directory. Cloud synchronisation can lock files or leave a partial tree while the server is running.
What the available documentation does not promise
No cited ATM9 source publishes a guaranteed player capacity, FPS or TPS benchmark, uptime figure, universal host-performance result or current hosting price. Treat any such number from an advertisement as a separate claim that needs its own verification. The reliable, source-backed decisions are to match versions exactly, use Java 17, provide at least 6 GB of allocated memory, obtain and extract the complete Server Files archive, start with the supplied scripts, and preserve the world and server-specific files during updates.
