To host All the Magic: Spellbound, use its separate server-pack archive for Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge—not the client ZIP—run it with Java 8 and about 6 GB of allocated memory, accept the EULA, and give every player the identical modpack release. A home server also needs TCP port 25565 forwarded through your router and firewall. Bedrock Edition clients cannot join this Forge-based pack.

What All the Magic: Spellbound is—and what that means for a server
CurseForge lists All the Magic Spellbound – ATMS by ATMTeam as a Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge modpack. Its design removes the technology focus found in broader mod collections and centers progression on magic mods such as Blood Magic and Botania. ATMTeam describes the goal as: “You have conquered all the mods, but can you conquer all the magic?”
The listed latest release is Spellbound-2.3.0.zip, dated November 15, 2022. The same Files page provides a separate Spellbound-2.3.0-server.zip. The page recorded 891,842 downloads in 2026. Those details matter because a normal vanilla 1.16.5 server JAR, or a different Forge pack, will not provide the files and registrations Spellbound expects.

Requirements before you download anything
Host computer
- A writable folder on a Windows or Linux computer that can remain online while people play.
- About 6 GB of RAM allocated to the server for a small group. This is an operating baseline from host guidance, not an official ATMTeam specification. Increase it if startup logs show memory pressure or your group loads more areas at once.
- Router access if friends will connect over the internet, plus permission to change the local firewall.
- Enough disk space for the server files, Forge libraries, logs, backups, and the growing world save. No fixed storage figure is published, so leave practical headroom rather than treating the download size as the total requirement.
Java runtime
Start with Java 8, the usual runtime target for this Minecraft 1.16.5 pack. One host setup reports that Java 11 also works, but that is an environment-specific result rather than a guarantee for every launcher or operating system. Check the runtime visible to your shell with:
java -version
Run that command in the same account and environment used by the server start script. A machine can have several Java installations; checking a system-wide version while the script selects another executable can lead to misleading troubleshooting.

Player-side requirements
Every player needs Minecraft Java Edition and the same Spellbound release as the server. They should install the pack through a launcher that supports the CurseForge distribution, then verify that the profile is running the matching 1.16.5 Forge build. A client on a newer pack release can be refused during the handshake or connect without required content.
Download the correct Spellbound archive
- Open the All the Magic Spellbound – ATMS project’s Files page on CurseForge.
- Choose the server-pack file, such as
Spellbound-2.3.0-server.zipfor the listed 2.3.0 release. - Do not use
Spellbound-2.3.0.zipas your dedicated server distribution. The client ZIP is a launcher manifest intended to assemble a player installation; it is not the complete server folder. - Save the archive somewhere you can verify and back up. Keep the release number in your notes so that every player and the host use the same version.
If the Files page lists a newer release in the future, download that release’s server archive and use its matching client version. Do not mix a 2.3.0 server with a later client merely because both are labelled Spellbound.

Install the server files and Forge
Extract into a dedicated folder
Create a folder used only for this server, then extract every item from the server ZIP into it. Avoid protected operating-system locations that prevent the process from writing libraries, configuration files, or the world save. The server account must have read and write access to the complete folder tree.
Install the loader when necessary
Some server packs include the Forge installation files or a ready-made launch script. If yours does not already contain an installed loader, place the Forge installer in the server folder and run:

The exact installer filename can differ with the Forge build included by the pack; use the file supplied with the server distribution. The command must be executed with the Java runtime you intend to use for the server.
Use the supplied start script
On Windows, run the supplied .bat file. On Linux, run the supplied .sh file and make it executable first if the operating system blocks it:

chmod +x start.sh
Do not delete Forge libraries or replace the script with a vanilla server command. The script normally supplies the loader and memory arguments expected by the pack. If you edit it to change memory, preserve the Forge and server-JAR arguments already present.
Accept the EULA and complete the first boot
- Start the server once. Forge and the mods create configuration files and an
eula.txtfile. - Stop the process after it has generated the files, then open
eula.txt. - Change the acceptance line to
eula=true, save the file, and close it. - Start the supplied script again.
- Leave the process running until the console reports that startup has completed. Mod registration can take several minutes on the first launch.
Do not judge performance, restart repeatedly, or invite players while registration is still in progress. A long first boot is normal for a large Forge pack; interrupting it can leave incomplete libraries or configuration data.
Set memory deliberately instead of guessing
Use roughly 6 GB as the starting allocation for a small group. Host guidance places 8 GB closer to a larger five-to-10-player group, but that figure is a provider estimate, not a published minimum or guarantee. The right value depends on simultaneous players, loaded chunks, exploration, farms, and other processes sharing the machine.
Look in the supplied start script for Java heap flags such as -Xms and -Xmx. Set the maximum heap to the amount you intend to reserve for the server, while leaving memory for the operating system and Java itself. Giving the server every gigabyte can make the computer less stable and does not automatically improve tick performance.

When to increase the allocation
- The console reports repeated out-of-memory errors or the process exits while loading.
- Garbage-collection pauses become frequent as more players explore separate areas.
- The operating system still has comfortable free memory and the server’s logs show heap pressure rather than a network or CPU bottleneck.
When more RAM will not help
- Players experience connection timeouts caused by a blocked port or firewall.
- The server is still completing first-time mod registration.
- A client and server have different mod lists or Forge builds.
- The host computer is saturated by another application or is using a slow disk.
Make a home server reachable from the internet
- Give the server computer a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a static configuration.
- In your router’s port-forwarding page, forward TCP 25565 to that local address. Use the same port configured by the server unless you have deliberately changed it.
- Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall on the chosen network profile. A router rule alone is not enough if the host firewall drops the connection.
- Start the server and test locally first. Then have a friend test from outside your home network using your public address.
- Share only the public address and port needed to connect. Do not expose administration interfaces or unrelated services.
Internet providers can use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding even when the router appears correctly configured. If outside players cannot connect after the firewall and forwarding rules are verified, ask the provider whether your connection receives a publicly routable address. A managed host normally supplies the address and network configuration instead.

Prepare every player’s client
- Install the exact Spellbound release used by the server, including its 1.16.5 Forge profile.
- Launch once in single-player or at the title screen so the launcher finishes downloading required files.
- Disable or remove client-only additions from the server package. Shader loaders, HUD overlays, and some texture or visual mods belong on player computers and can prevent a dedicated server from starting if copied into its mods folder.
- Enter the server address only after the host has completed startup.
Keep a written release number for the group. If one player updates early, have that player create a separate launcher profile rather than replacing the version everyone else is using.
Can Bedrock players join?
No. Spellbound is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5. Bedrock clients cannot load its Forge mods or participate in the pack’s progression. Everyone joining this server must use a compatible Java Edition installation with the same modpack and loader.

Both approaches can run the same server-pack files, but they move different responsibilities between you and a provider. Current prices, locations, RAM limits, modpack support, and backup policies vary by provider and must be checked on the provider’s live page; no universal monthly price or service level applies.

Choose self-hosting when you already have an always-on computer, router access, and time for maintenance. Choose managed hosting when a stable public connection, automated backups, or avoiding operating-system administration matters more than maximum control.

Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete world directory, and retain at least one copy outside the machine running Minecraft. Include the server configuration and scripts when practical, because they preserve settings that a world-only copy does not.
Upgrade cautiously
Back up the world before changing the Spellbound release, Forge build, or individual mods. Test the new files on a separate copy first. A world opened by a newer mod version may not safely return to the older version, so keep the original backup untouched until the new installation has been verified.
Troubleshooting checklist
The server closes immediately
- Run
java -versionfrom the same environment as the start script and confirm Java 8 is selected. - Check that Forge was installed in the server folder and that the script references the supplied Forge files.
- Confirm the folder is writable and that security software has not quarantined a library.
- Verify that
eula=trueis present ineula.txt.
A player is refused during connection
- Compare the client and server Spellbound release numbers.
- Compare the Forge loader and mod lists; remove client-only visual or HUD mods from the dedicated server.
- Check that the player is using Java Edition, not Bedrock.
Friends cannot see the server
- Confirm the server is listening on TCP 25565 and that the router forwards that port to the correct local computer.
- Allow Java through the host firewall and retest from outside the home network.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or a changing public address if local tests work but internet tests fail.
Startup appears frozen
Watch the console for several minutes on first boot. Mod registration and world generation can be slow. If there is no progress after a reasonable wait, inspect the newest log for a Java error, missing mod, permission failure, or mismatched file rather than repeatedly killing the process.
The launcher will not install or update the pack
Use the launcher’s repair option, then check Forge and mod compatibility. Reinstalling without preserving the correct server archive can recreate the original mistake, so confirm that the client profile and the separate server pack still refer to the same release.
A practical launch checklist
- Server archive is the separate
-server.zipfile. - Pack target is Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge.
- Java 8 is selected and verified with
java -version. - Initial allocation is about 6 GB, with headroom for the operating system.
- Forge is installed and the supplied Windows or Linux script is used.
eula=trueis saved before the second start.- First boot reaches its completion message before players connect.
- All clients use the same Spellbound release and Forge loader.
- Client-only shader, HUD, and texture additions are not placed on the dedicated server.
- Home hosting has TCP 25565 forwarded and allowed through the firewall.
- A clean world backup exists before any version change.
Can you host Spellbound for free?
Self-hosting avoids a separate Minecraft-hosting subscription when you already own a suitable computer and internet connection. It is not cost-free in the broader sense: electricity, hardware wear, storage, backups, and the reliability of your home connection remain your responsibility. Free third-party hosts often impose resource, uptime, queue, or modpack restrictions; verify that a service supports a 1.16.5 Forge server pack and provides enough usable RAM before moving a world there.
The least risky no-subscription path is a computer you control, the official server-pack archive, Java 8, and your own backup routine. If the machine cannot stay online or your connection cannot accept inbound traffic, managed hosting is usually simpler even though it adds a recurring charge.
