Identify which Zombiecraft you want to host
Before downloading anything, match the name to the software. The official remastered project describes itself as a vanilla Minecraft: Java Edition server running on version 1.21.3. It is built around four-player co-op, barricades, mystery boxes, perk machines, wall weapons and endless zombie waves. Players do not install mods.

The other project, listed as ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse by JeremyTheGoat, is a modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 using Forge. Its current main release is The Apocalypse V3.4, dated April 6, 2026. CurseForge reports 734,972 downloads in 2026. This pack adds a much broader survival-horror world, but every player and the server must use matching Forge and pack files.
| Detail | Official remastered server | ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse modpack |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Java Edition 1.21.3 | Java Edition 1.20.1 |
| Server type | Advertised as vanilla; no player mods required | Forge modded server |
| Players | Up to four, according to the project page | No fixed number stated; practical capacity depends on CPU, memory, view distance and entity load |
| Gameplay | Co-op rounds against endless waves, with unlocks and gear upgrades | Open-world survival horror with escalating threats, scarce supplies and exploration |
| Administration | Use the project’s current connection and community instructions | Install Forge and the pack, configure the server, manage networking and maintain backups |
If your group wants a quick four-player session with no mod installation, use the official path. If you want cities, forests, bunkers, evolving enemies and a persistent survival world, use the Forge pack.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Self-hosting on your own computer
Self-hosting gives you complete control over files, configuration, access lists, backups and update timing. It also makes you responsible for Java, Forge, network reachability, operating-system security, performance tuning and recovery when an update breaks a world. The computer must remain online whenever friends want to play, and its upload connection must handle every remote player.
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host can remove the most tedious setup work. WinterNode advertises one-click deployment for ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, with the pack preinstalled. Its published starting price is $15.92 per month, and it recommends 8 GB of memory; the page describes 6–8 GB as typical depending on player count and view distance. These are that provider’s claims, not a universal performance guarantee.
The same listing says customers receive file and SFTP access, twice-daily backups and 45 days of backup history. It also says there is no fixed slot limit, with allocated RAM acting as the practical constraint. A managed plan is attractive when the host computer cannot stay online, several people need reliable access, or nobody in the group wants to troubleshoot Forge and networking.
Host the official remastered server
The official project page is primarily a play-and-community landing page, not a complete dedicated-server installation manual. It identifies the platform as “Vanilla,” “Minecraft: Java Edition,” and “1.21.3,” and states that no mods are required. Do not substitute Forge 1.20.1 files or assume that the modpack instructions apply.
- Confirm the edition and version. Install or launch Minecraft: Java Edition and select release 1.21.3 in the launcher. Bedrock Edition and other Java versions are not the platform identified by the project page.
- Use the project’s published server address. Obtain the current address and connection procedure from the official project page and its community support channels. Addresses and access rules can change, so copy the current value rather than relying on an old video or forum post.
- Have each player test Java connectivity. Every participant should launch Java Edition 1.21.3, add the supplied server address and verify that the server appears before scheduling a session. Because the project supports up to four co-op players, plan for a maximum group of four.
- Keep the client unmodded. The project advertises a vanilla experience. Do not install the Forge loader or the ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse modpack for this route; those files belong to a different project.
- Use the official community channels for hosting questions. If the published instructions describe a particular access method, whitelist process or service requirement, follow those directions exactly. The public project information reviewed here does not establish a downloadable dedicated-server package or a specific port-forwarding procedure, so those details should not be improvised.
Once connected, the intended loop is compact and cooperative: fight repeated zombie waves, open new areas, use barricades to delay attacks, buy or find wall weapons, and spend resources at perk machines and mystery boxes. The four-player limit is a design constraint, not merely a suggested party size.

Self-host ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse with Forge
The following procedure applies to the CurseForge modpack, not the official 1.21.3 server. Use the pack’s current 1.20.1 release and its supplied server files wherever they differ from generic Forge documentation.
Prepare the host
- A computer or virtual server that can remain online for the whole play window.
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 compatibility.
- The Forge server build required by the pack’s release.
- The exact The Apocalypse V3.4 files, or a newer release only after confirming that every player can update together.
- Enough free disk space for the installation, generated terrain, logs and multiple world backups.
- Administrative access to the host operating system and network router, unless your provider supplies managed networking.
Memory needs vary with simulation distance, view distance, entity counts, structures, additional mods and the number of players. Starting near 8 GB is a reasonable provider recommendation for a small private group, but it is not a guaranteed minimum. Monitor actual use and tick performance instead of allocating every gigabyte on a machine that also runs the operating system.
Install Forge in a clean directory
- Create a new server directory used only for this installation. Keeping it separate prevents old worlds, mods and configuration files from contaminating the pack.
- Download the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server installer that matches the pack’s documented requirement. Do not install a 1.21.x Forge build or a different Minecraft minor version.
- Run the installer’s server option and choose the new directory. Let it create the Forge libraries and launch files.
- Copy the modpack’s server distribution, mods and configuration files into that directory as instructed by the pack release. If the distribution includes a generated launch script, use that script rather than inventing a different command.
- Do not add client-only files blindly. A pack’s server download or server instructions determine which mods, scripts, libraries and resource files belong on the server.
Start once and accept the EULA
Launch the Forge server once from its generated script. The first run normally creates the world directory, configuration folders and an EULA file before stopping. Open the EULA file, read the terms and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to them. Start the server again and wait for the console to report that it has finished loading before attempting to join.
Set server policy in server.properties
Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. Set the policies your group actually needs:
- Difficulty: choose the intended survival challenge; the pack is designed around escalating danger, so lowering difficulty changes the experience.
- View distance: begin conservatively. Larger values increase chunk generation, memory use and CPU work for every player.
- Whitelist: enable it for a private group and add each player’s exact Java username.
- Game rules and access settings: review spawn protection, player-versus-player behavior, command permissions and any pack-specific settings before opening the server to the internet.
- Server port and address binding: retain the port selected by the installation unless you have a reason to change it, and record the final value for your network or hosting provider.
Make one controlled change at a time. If a setting causes crashes or excessive lag, reverting the last change is much faster than diagnosing several simultaneous edits.

Make the server reachable
- On a home network, assign the host computer a stable local address so a router rule does not point to a different device later.
- Forward the configured Minecraft server port from the router to that computer, or follow your virtual-server provider’s firewall and networking procedure.
- Allow the Java server process through the host firewall only on the networks and ports you intend to expose.
- Test locally first, then ask someone outside your home network to connect. A local connection proves that the server is running; it does not prove that internet forwarding is correct.
- Give friends the external address and port only after the outside test succeeds. Keep the whitelist enabled and avoid publishing the address publicly.
Synchronize every player’s installation
Each client must use Minecraft 1.20.1, the matching Forge build, the identical modpack release and any required resource pack. A player with the official 1.21.3 vanilla client cannot join this server. Likewise, a client that is one pack revision behind may fail during registry checks, disconnect during login or load a different world behavior.
Provide players with the same launcher profile and a short checklist rather than sending individual mod files at random. If the pack includes configuration files that belong on clients, distribute those exact files. Never solve a missing-mod error by downloading an unrelated version from a search result.
Back up before updates
Stop the server, copy the entire world directory and retain at least one backup outside the live installation before changing the pack, Forge build or individual mods. WinterNode specifically warns that major version jumps can alter mod data and recommends a manual backup before updates. Test an update on a copy of the world first when the world matters to your group. If the test fails, restore the previous files rather than repeatedly launching the damaged save.
Deploy the modpack with managed hosting
A one-click Forge deployment is useful when you want a persistent server without maintaining a home machine. The exact control-panel labels vary, but the safe sequence is consistent:
- Select Minecraft 1.20.1 and the ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse Forge installation, not a vanilla or 1.21.x template.
- Choose memory based on the group and settings. The advertised recommendation is 8 GB, with 6–8 GB described as typical by WinterNode.
- Deploy and wait for the panel to finish installing the pack and Forge files. Do not upload a second copy over the automated installation unless support documentation requires it.
- Open the file manager or SFTP account and confirm that the expected mods, configuration folders and launch files exist.
- Set the whitelist, difficulty, view distance and other policy values before sharing access details.
- Use the provider’s firewall or networking controls, then test with one local or panel-provided connection followed by an external player.
- Confirm that scheduled backups are enabled and learn how to download a backup before making any update. The cited WinterNode listing advertises twice-daily backups and 45 days of history, but retention and schedules can change with the plan.
Managed hosting does not remove the need for version discipline. Keep a written record of the Minecraft version, Forge build, pack release, configuration changes and update date. That record lets you restore the last known-good combination when a new release introduces a loader error or world problem.

Memory, view distance and capacity
| Change | What it increases | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| More players | Loaded chunks, entities, network traffic and simultaneous combat | Add memory only as needed, then lower view distance or entity-heavy settings if tick time remains high |
| Higher view distance | Chunk loading, CPU work and memory use | Reduce it first when exploration causes stutter or long joins |
| Many entities or farms | Server tick work and save time | Limit concentrated entity counts and inspect the area where lag begins |
| Additional mods | Startup time, memory demand and compatibility risk | Test additions on a copied world and record every file and version |
| New world generation | Disk writes and CPU load while unexplored terrain is created | Pre-generate cautiously, keep backups and avoid exploring with maximum view distance during peak play |
The provider’s 6–8 GB figure is a starting point for its advertised setup, not a benchmark for every machine. Leave operating-system headroom, watch the server console for tick warnings and increase resources only when measurements show that memory is the bottleneck. More RAM cannot fix a wrong Forge version, a broken mod or an unreachable firewall.
What the two experiences are designed to feel like
Official remastered server
The official server is a focused co-op activity for up to four people. Players hold against endless waves, repair or use barricades, unlock areas and improve their loadouts. Mystery boxes, perk machines and wall weapons give the group reasons to move and spend resources between attacks. It is the better fit for a short, structured session where nobody wants to install a modpack.
ZombieCraft: Zombie Apocalypse
The Forge pack’s author describes a harsher, persistent world: zombie strength rises over time; parasites spread; food and ammunition are scarce; bases need defense; and permadeath raises the cost of mistakes. The description also highlights sound- and scent-driven zombie behavior, cities and forests, bunkers, loot caches, and more than 100 biomes and structures. These are the pack author’s feature claims, not independent performance tests, so expect the actual balance and stability to depend on the release and server configuration.

Troubleshoot the failures that stop most servers
“Incompatible version” or immediate disconnect
Compare all four identifiers: Minecraft version, Forge version, modpack release and resource-pack or configuration revision. The official route requires Java 1.21.3 without mods; the Apocalypse pack requires Java 1.20.1 with Forge. Correct the outlier instead of changing the server repeatedly.
Missing-mod or registry errors
Install the pack through its documented distribution, then compare the client’s mods and configuration with the server’s files. Remove duplicate jars and do not mix files from another release. If the server was upgraded, restore the previous backup and test the new pack on a copy.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Friends cannot connect, but the host can
Test from outside the host network. Check the configured port, router forwarding target, operating-system firewall and any provider firewall. Confirm that the address given to friends is the external address, not the host’s private network address. A whitelist rejection is different from a timeout, so read the server console while the player attempts to join.
Lag after adding players or exploring
Lower view distance, stop unnecessary entity-heavy activities and check whether lag occurs during chunk generation or everywhere. Watch memory and tick warnings before buying more resources. If the server is swapping or constantly near its allocation, increase memory; if one area causes the problem, investigate entities and machines there.

Crashes after an update
Stop launching the same broken combination. Record the first error in the log, restore the last known-good world and pack backup, then test the update without other changes. Major version jumps can change saved data, which is why a manual backup is required before updating.
Pre-launch checklist
- Everyone has selected the same project: official vanilla or Forge modpack.
- The Minecraft version is correct: 1.21.3 for the official server or 1.20.1 for the pack.
- Forge is installed only for the modpack route.
- The server starts cleanly and has completed one full world load.
- The EULA has been accepted by the administrator who operates the server.
- Whitelist, difficulty, view distance and permissions match the group’s policy.
- An external player has tested connectivity.
- A manual world backup exists before the first major update.
- Players know which launcher profile, pack release and resource files to install.
- The administrator knows how to stop the server safely and restore a backup.
With those checks complete, the choice is straightforward: use the official 1.21.3 vanilla server for a small, structured four-player wave session, or deploy the 1.20.1 Forge pack when your group wants a larger, more demanding survival world and accepts the additional installation and maintenance work.
