You can run a YouTube Live encoder on a Linux EC2 instance in AWS’s Mumbai region, ap-south-1, instead of leaving a home computer on. The encoder sends your authorized video source to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. One important limitation: a YouTube playlist page is not itself an encoder input. You need media files or another source that your chosen encoder can read and that you are authorized to broadcast.
What this setup does—and does not do
The basic path is authorized media source → encoder running on EC2 → YouTube Live. EC2 supplies the remote computer; your encoder reads the source and sends a live feed to YouTube. AWS lists Asia Pacific (Mumbai) as region ap-south-1 in its EC2 region documentation.
This does not mean you can paste a YouTube playlist URL into YouTube Studio and have it become a live feed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting an encoder with a stream URL and key; they do not document using a playlist page as the encoder’s video input. Use video files or another encoder-readable source, and only content you own or have permission to broadcast. Do not download or rebroadcast other creators’ videos without authorization.
Check YouTube eligibility before setting up EC2
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check this before spending time configuring the server. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guide.

- Verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is enabled.
- Check for applicable channel restrictions and resolve any issues before scheduling a stream.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Keep the stream key private.
Set up a Linux EC2 instance in Mumbai
- In the AWS EC2 console, launch a Linux instance and select the Mumbai region, Asia Pacific (Mumbai),
ap-south-1. - Choose an instance type only after considering the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and any other work the server will perform. The sources here do not establish a universally suitable instance size. Run a test and check actual CPU and memory use before relying on it continuously.
- Configure storage for the operating system, encoder, logs, and any media files you plan to keep on the instance. Account for storage and outbound data transfer when estimating cost.
- Connect using an AWS-supported method such as EC2 Instance Connect or SSH. Follow the method’s IAM and network prerequisites in AWS’s EC2 connection documentation. If using SSH, restrict inbound access to the source you need rather than opening it broadly.
Prepare the media and encoder
Provide the encoder with a source it can actually read: for example, authorized files stored on the instance or made accessible to it. A playlist webpage and a directory or feed of media files are different things. Confirm the chosen encoder’s input and looping behavior with a short test; the official YouTube setup guidance does not provide an end-to-end recipe for turning a playlist page into an encoder source.
Select an encoder that can send a live feed to YouTube. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube output settings. Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in screenshots, public repositories, tutorial examples, or shell history. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Use YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend RTMPS when supported, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. The broader settings guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. Follow the bitrate range in YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than carrying a bitrate over from a different format.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube’s guidance says no more than four seconds.
- Bitrate: choose from YouTube’s recommendation for the exact resolution and frame rate you will send.
- Protocol: use RTMPS when available for encrypted ingest.
- Audio and video: confirm that the selected codec, frame rate, resolution, and audio format match what the encoder can produce reliably.
Exact encoder labels vary by software, so use the encoder’s own documentation for where each setting lives. Do not assume a setting configured in one encoder has the same name or behavior in another.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the encoder and check that Live Control Room receives the feed.
- Review the preview for the correct video, audio, and framing before going live.
- Run a controlled test long enough to observe resource use and confirm that the source loops or advances as intended.
- Monitor stream quality and logs during the test. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, previewing before going live, and monitoring the stream in its live streaming guidance.
- Only after the basic stream works should you design unattended operation. Process supervision, restart behavior, logs, and alerts are operational choices to configure and test; neither a successful first start nor EC2 alone guarantees recovery or failover.
Estimate the ongoing AWS cost
There is no reliable one-size monthly total for an always-on EC2 livestream. The cost depends on the instance type and runtime, storage, bitrate, outbound data transfer, and any additional AWS services you select. Use the AWS On-Demand EC2 pricing page for the actual configuration and date of your estimate; include transfer and storage rather than counting only compute time.
