To host Valhelsia: Enhanced Vanilla for Minecraft 1.18.2, install 64-bit Java 17, download the official 1.4.2b Fabric server pack, allocate enough memory, run the included startup script, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and make the server reachable through your firewall and router. The complete process below covers both a home server and managed hosting, plus safe updates, backups, terrain pregeneration, and recovery from common failures.

What you need before installing
Enhanced Vanilla is a Fabric-based modpack for Minecraft 1.18.2. The server and every client must use the same compatible pack release. For a current 1.18.2 installation, use the official Valhelsia: Enhanced Vanilla 1.4.2b server pack listed among the 1.18.2 Fabric files. CurseForge identifies 1.4.2b as the main 1.18.2 release, dated September 11, 2022. The project page has recorded 1,765,174 downloads in its displayed metadata; that figure is historical project metadata, not a guarantee of current activity or compatibility.

Hardware and operating-system checklist
- A 64-bit Windows, Linux, or macOS machine that can remain online while people play.
- 64-bit Java 17, not an older Java runtime bundled with another application.
- Fast, reliable storage with room for the server files, backups, logs, and generated world data.
- Network access that allows the Minecraft server process to accept connections from the intended players.
- Administrative access to install Java, edit files, configure a firewall, and, for a home server, change router port forwarding.
Memory allocation
Valhelsia’s current memory table lists Enhanced Vanilla at 4 GB minimum, 5 GB recommended, and 5 GB recommended for HD settings. Its server guide also describes the pack as generally needing 4–8 GB and recommends at least 4 GB for a smooth experience with five to seven players. Treat those figures as starting allocations: additional players, a larger view distance, many loaded chunks, and chunk loaders can all increase the requirement.

Set the value named ALLOCATED_RAM near the top of the supplied ServerStart.bat or ServerStart.sh. Allocate only what the machine can provide while leaving enough memory for the operating system, backups, monitoring, and any other services running on the host.

Install the required Java runtime
Valhelsia’s documentation states that Minecraft 1.17 and later packs, including Enhanced Vanilla, require Java 17. Use a 64-bit build. A 32-bit runtime can impose memory limits even when the computer has more physical RAM.
Windows
Install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution, then open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:
java --versionThe output should identify Java 17 and a 64-bit runtime. If the command reports an older version or is not found, correct the system PATH or use the Java installation’s full executable path before starting the server.
Ubuntu or Debian
Valhelsia’s guide gives this package command:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-17-jreVerify the result:
java --versionFedora, RHEL, or CentOS
The documented command is:
su -c "yum install java-1.17.0-openjdk"Run java --version afterward. On distributions that have moved from yum to dnf, use the distribution’s compatible package-management procedure while ensuring that the installed runtime remains Java 17.
macOS
Install a 64-bit Java 17 package appropriate for your Mac, then verify it in Terminal with java --version. If multiple Java versions are installed, make Java 17 the runtime selected in the shell that will launch the server.
Download and unpack the 1.4.2b server pack
- Open the Valhelsia project page on CurseForge and select the Files tab.
- Find the 1.18.2 Fabric entry for Enhanced Vanilla and open its Additional Files area.
- Download the server pack associated with release 1.4.2b rather than the ordinary client download.
- Create a dedicated server directory, such as
Valhelsia-EnhancedVanilla-1.18.2, on a disk with sufficient free space. - Extract the server-pack archive into that directory. Do not run the scripts from inside a compressed archive or mix files from a different pack release.
Record the exact pack version you install. Every player should install the matching client release and Fabric configuration. A client that is merely “also on 1.18.2” can still fail if its modpack release differs.

Complete the first launch and accept the EULA
The supplied scripts perform the loader and library setup for you. The first run normally creates files and then stops because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted.
- On Windows, double-click
ServerStart.bat. On Linux or macOS, runServerStart.shfrom a terminal in the server directory. - Wait for the initial process to finish and close. Confirm that the directory now contains
eula.txt. - Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Save the file and launch the same startup script again.
On the second launch, the server should continue creating the world and configuration files. Keep the terminal or command window visible during this stage: its log identifies missing Java, permission, library, and mod-loading errors more clearly than a silent desktop shortcut.
Set server.properties deliberately
After the EULA-enabled launch has created the normal configuration, stop the server cleanly before editing files. Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and change only the settings you understand. Restart after saving so the server reads the changes.
Identity and gameplay settings
- Set the server name or message of the day so players can recognize it in their multiplayer list.
- Choose the desired difficulty and other gameplay options before inviting players.
- Set a whitelist if the world is private. With the server running, add an administrator or player using
/whitelist add YourPlayerName. - Choose a sensible view distance for the machine. Higher values increase the number of chunks that must stay loaded and can raise CPU and memory use.
Allow flight for mod compatibility
Valhelsia’s server guide advises changing allow-flight=false to allow-flight=true on modded servers to prevent problems with some mods. This setting does not grant creative mode; it prevents the vanilla anti-flight check from incorrectly kicking players whose modded movement resembles flying.

Enhanced Vanilla’s documented level types use vanilla defaults. Leave the level-type setting unchanged unless you have a specific, tested reason to alter world generation. If you change a world-generation setting after the world already exists, stop the server and delete the existing world folder before the next launch. Otherwise, the established world can continue using its old generation data and make the setting appear ineffective.
Make the server reachable
A server that starts successfully is not necessarily reachable from another computer. The networking work differs between a home machine and a managed host.

Home server
- Confirm the server process is listening on the port shown by
server.properties. - Create an operating-system firewall rule allowing the Java server process or the configured Minecraft server port.
- On the router, forward that same port to the local IP address of the server computer. Give the server a reserved or otherwise stable local address so the forwarding rule does not become stale.
- Give players the reachable public address and configured port. Players on the same local network may need to use the server’s local address instead, depending on the router.
- Test from a network outside the home connection. Testing only from the host itself can miss firewall, forwarding, or carrier-network restrictions.
Valhelsia’s guide assumes administrators already understand vanilla Minecraft networking and refers them to a vanilla server tutorial for these fundamentals. Do not publish your router’s administrator credentials, and do not expose unrelated management services to the internet merely to make Minecraft accessible.
Managed host
A managed provider normally supplies a control panel for uploading or selecting the pack, setting Java and memory options, starting the process, and configuring the connection address. Follow that provider’s networking instructions instead of forwarding ports on your home router. Confirm that the panel supports Fabric and Minecraft 1.18.2 before purchasing or migrating a world.
Pregenerate terrain with Chunky when it fits the world
Enhanced Vanilla includes Chunky Pregenerator in both the client pack and server pack. Pregeneration creates terrain before players explore it, reducing the severe CPU and disk spikes that can occur when several people travel into new areas simultaneously. It also consumes storage and processing time, so choose a radius that matches the world’s expected play area and the machine’s capacity.
The documented example generates a 1,000-block radius around the origin:
/chunky radius 1000
/chunky startRun these commands from the server console or as an administrator with the necessary permissions. Watch disk space and server performance while the job runs. A smaller radius is more appropriate for a private survival world that will remain near spawn; a larger one can make sense for an event area but should be planned as a storage and CPU commitment rather than enabled automatically.
Back up before changing anything
Make a complete backup before installing a new pack release, changing world-generation settings, experimenting with mods, or performing major configuration edits. Stop the server first so region files and player data are flushed consistently. Include the world directory and the server configuration that defines the current installation. Keep at least one backup separate from the machine that runs the server, and periodically test that an archive can actually be restored.

- Use a dated backup name that records the pack version.
- Keep the original backup untouched while testing an update.
- Document intentional edits to
server.properties, scripts, permissions, and custom datapacks so they can be restored after replacing pack files. - Retain a known-good server directory until the updated instance has started, accepted connections, and passed a world-save test.
Update an existing installation safely
Release-specific warnings in the new changelog take precedence over this general procedure. Read those notes before replacing files.
- Stop the running server and wait for the process to exit completely.
- Make a complete backup of the world and server directory.
- In the old installation, remove the
config,defaultconfigs,libraries,openloader,mods,kubejs, andscriptsfolders when they are present. - Remove the old loader JAR as directed by the Valhelsia procedure.
- Extract or copy the new server-pack contents over the server directory.
- Restore only intentional custom changes, such as your server name, whitelist, access controls, and carefully maintained scripts. Do not blindly copy obsolete configuration files into the new release.
- Start the server and inspect the log for dependency, Java, or migration errors before allowing players to connect.
- Have a player join, move through the world, and disconnect cleanly. Confirm that the server saves before deleting the old installation or its backup.
All clients must update to the same compatible release. A server update without matching client files commonly produces mod-list or registry mismatches rather than a useful in-game error.

Self-hosting removes a recurring hosting bill, but the operator becomes responsible for the entire service: Java installation, memory tuning, backups, firewall and router configuration, storage, updates, troubleshooting, and uptime. It is a good fit when you control the network and are comfortable maintaining a Linux or desktop machine.
Managed hosting shifts those operational tasks to a provider and usually supplies a web control panel, persistent storage, automated start/stop controls, and network configuration. It costs money and still requires you to manage the pack, player permissions, backups, and release compatibility. Check the provider’s supported Minecraft and Fabric versions before moving an existing world.

The recommendation does not remove the need to choose the correct 1.18.2 Fabric pack or keep independent backups.
Troubleshoot the problems that stop most first launches
The window closes immediately or the process crashes
Check the Java runtime first. Run java --version in the same environment used by the startup script and confirm it is the required 64-bit release. A different Java installation earlier in the system path is a common cause. Then read the final lines of the server log for permissions, missing files, or a failed dependency rather than repeatedly double-clicking the script.
The server runs out of memory or world creation takes a long time
Review the ALLOCATED_RAM value in the startup script and compare actual usage with the machine’s total memory. Increase allocation toward Valhelsia’s documented recommendation only if the host has enough free memory for the operating system. Reduce view distance, avoid loading unnecessary chunks, and account for chunk loaders and simultaneous exploration. Pregeneration can move terrain-generation work to a controlled maintenance window, but it does not eliminate the storage and CPU cost.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is still running and has finished startup.
- Check the configured port, operating-system firewall rule, router forwarding, and the address given to players.
- Test from outside the home network when self-hosting.
- Verify that each player is using the same Enhanced Vanilla release, Minecraft version, and Fabric pack as the server.
- For a managed host, confirm that the panel reports the server as online and that the assigned address has not changed.
Clients report a mod or registry mismatch
Compare the server-pack filename and release with every client installation. Do not combine a newer client pack with the 1.4.2b server or copy individual mods from unrelated versions. Reinstalling the matching client pack is usually safer than manually replacing one JAR at a time.

Changed world settings have no visible effect
Stop the server, confirm the setting was saved in server.properties, and remove the existing world folder before starting a new world. World-generation options are read while a world is created; they do not retroactively rewrite already generated terrain. Preserve a backup before deleting anything.
Lag appears after an update
Check the new release’s compatibility notes, confirm that Java and memory settings were retained intentionally, and inspect the log for repeated errors. Consider reducing view distance or pregenerating a practical play area. Valhelsia’s guide also points administrators toward performance tools and tuning options; apply only those compatible with the installed release.
A practical operating routine
Once the server is working, a small routine prevents most avoidable outages:
- Keep a written record of the pack release, Java version, memory allocation, port, and custom settings.
- Back up before every update and before deleting a world for generation changes.
- Read each release changelog before replacing loader, mod, or configuration files.
- Watch disk space, especially after using Chunky or allowing players to explore widely.
- Use the whitelist and grant operator privileges only to trusted administrators.
- Restart deliberately after configuration changes and verify a clean save before inviting players back.
- Keep clients synchronized with the server’s exact pack release instead of troubleshooting mismatches one mod at a time.
With the official 1.4.2b server pack, Java 17, correctly allocated memory, a completed EULA, deliberate properties, and tested networking, Enhanced Vanilla 1.18.2 can run either from a machine you administer or from a managed Minecraft host. The difference is who performs the infrastructure work; the version, compatibility, backup, and update disciplines remain yours in both cases.
