How to Host a StoneBlock 3 Server

A complete StoneBlock 3 server setup guide: choose self-hosting or managed hosting, install the matching Forge files, configure Java and memory, test locally, and let friends connect safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to host an FTB StoneBlock 3 server is to run the matching Forge server pack on a Java 17 machine, give it at least 4 GB of memory (6 GB is the official recommendation), and make every player install the identical StoneBlock 3 release. Download the server installer from Feed The Beast, keep its original filename, let it create the server files, accept the Minecraft EULA, and launch the generated run.bat (Windows) or run.sh (macOS/Linux). Test on your local network before configuring router port forwarding for friends on the internet.

What you need before installing StoneBlock 3

StoneBlock 3 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.18.2. A server is not compatible with an arbitrary Minecraft installation: the server pack, Forge build, mods and configuration files must correspond to the same StoneBlock 3 release that your clients use.

Official software and memory requirements

Requirement What to use Qualification
Java Java 17 Feed The Beast lists Java 17 for StoneBlock 3. Its installer guide says the installer downloads the correct Java version when needed.
Server memory At least 4 GB RAM This is the pack requirement, not a promise of a particular player count or performance level.
Recommended memory 6 GB RAM Feed The Beast lists 6 GB as recommended on its requirements page updated in 2026.
Operating system Windows, macOS or Linux The installer creates a Windows batch launcher or a Unix shell launcher according to the platform.
Game version Minecraft 1.18.2 with the matching Forge-based StoneBlock 3 files Clients and server must use the same pack release and underlying versions.

Do not allocate every gigabyte on the host to Minecraft. The operating system, Java process, file cache and any other services need headroom. A machine with only 4 GB total system memory may be unable to run a stable server even though 4 GB is the pack minimum; 6 GB should be treated as a target only when the host has additional memory available.

Choose a dedicated folder and account

Create a folder used only for this server, such as StoneBlock3-Server. Keeping world data, logs, scripts and backups together makes updates and recovery safer. On a shared computer, use a normal user account where possible and avoid running unrelated downloads or applications from the server directory.

Pick a hosting method

Approach Advantages Work and limits Best fit
Self-host at home No monthly game-server hosting bill, complete control over files, mods, backups and Java settings. You handle installation, operating-system updates, firewall rules, router forwarding, uptime, backups and troubleshooting. Home upload bandwidth and power availability affect the experience. A small group with someone comfortable administering a computer and network.
Managed CurseForge server CurseForge documents one-click modpack deployment, plan tiers and region selection; it says no manual file upload or port forwarding is required. Current StoneBlock 3 availability, pricing, included RAM/CPU, backup controls and terms must be checked at the time you subscribe. Players who prefer a dashboard and do not want to expose or maintain a home network.
Another managed provider May offer different regions, support hours, resource tiers or backup policies. Support for the exact StoneBlock 3 release, modpack update workflow and total cost vary. Confirm these details before paying. Groups comparing administration effort, latency and budget rather than wanting to run hardware themselves.

There is no official player-capacity figure in the published StoneBlock 3 requirements. RAM guidance should therefore be used as a starting requirement, not as a claim that a 6 GB server supports a fixed number of simultaneous players. CPU speed, world activity, chunk loading, storage and network quality all influence the result.

Find the current StoneBlock 3 server installer

Use Feed The Beast’s StoneBlock 3 versions or server-files page and record the pack and version IDs shown there. At the time covered by the 2026 page, the pack ID is 100 and the latest version ID is 100359. These identifiers are volatile; check the page again immediately before downloading so that the installer and clients refer to the same release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the current StoneBlock 3 versions/server-files page on Feed The Beast.
  2. Select the server-files download for your operating system and copy the installer into the dedicated server folder.
  3. Keep the filename exactly as downloaded. Feed The Beast warns that the filename identifies the pack and version; renaming it can make the installer ask you to enter those IDs manually.
  4. Do not mix an installer from one version with server files or client files from another version.

macOS and Linux example

The following example uses the IDs listed above and the macOS endpoint published by Feed The Beast. Replace them only after checking the current versions page:

curl -JLO "https://api.feed-the-beast.com/v1/modpacks/public/modpack/100/100359/server/macos" && chmod +x serverinstall_100_100359

Run the command from the server folder. On Linux, use the Linux server-files link and the filename it supplies rather than assuming the macOS endpoint. The important details are the platform endpoint, the unchanged installer name and execute permission.

Windows download

Download the Windows server installer from the same page and place it in the dedicated folder. Do not rename the executable. Windows may display a security prompt for a downloaded executable; verify that you obtained it from the official Feed The Beast download page before allowing it to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the installer and complete the first launch

  1. Open the server folder. Make sure the installer is the only pack installer you intend to use there, especially if you have tried several versions.
  2. Start the installer. On Windows, double-click the downloaded executable. On macOS or Linux, open a terminal in the folder and run the executable whose name was supplied by the download, for example ./serverinstall_100_100359 after granting execute permission.
  3. Answer the installer prompts. Let it download and unpack the server files. A slow first run is normal because the installer is assembling the complete modpack rather than copying a small vanilla server jar.
  4. Read the generated files. The installer creates the launch scripts and the configuration needed by the pack. Do not delete files simply because their names are unfamiliar; mods and Forge components depend on them.
  5. Accept the EULA. Start the generated launcher once. When Minecraft creates eula.txt, open it, read the license and change the acceptance line only if you agree to the terms. Save the file before launching again.
  6. Launch the server normally. Use run.bat on Windows or run.sh on macOS/Linux. Keep the console visible during the first successful startup so you can see errors, warnings and the message indicating that the server is ready for connections.

Set memory without starving the host

Begin with the pack’s 4 GB minimum and work toward 6 GB when the computer has enough unused RAM. The generated script may contain Java options such as an initial heap and maximum heap setting. Change the maximum value in the script or the hosting panel, then restart the server; do not try to change Java memory while the process is running. Leave operating-system headroom and watch for swapping, long pauses or an unresponsive desktop.

Stop the server cleanly

Use the console’s normal stop command before closing a terminal or shutting down the computer. A forced termination can leave world data in an incomplete state. A clean stop also ensures pending chunk and player-data writes finish before you copy a backup.

Test the server on your local network

  1. Start the server and wait until its console reports readiness rather than attempting to connect while Forge is still loading mods.
  2. From the same computer, connect with the Minecraft client profile that matches the server. Use the local address offered by the game or the host’s local network address as appropriate for your setup.
  3. Join with a second device on the same home network. This separates modpack or server problems from router port-forwarding problems.
  4. Enter the world, move between chunks and perform a few ordinary actions. Check the server console for repeated errors and note whether the host remains responsive.
  5. Stop the server cleanly and make a copy of the world and configuration before exposing it to the internet.

A local test that works proves the installation and client files are basically aligned. It does not prove that an outside player can reach your router; that requires a separate forwarding and firewall test.

Let friends join over the internet

Identify the port the server actually uses

Open the server’s server.properties and note the configured server port. Use that value for the router rule and for the address you give players. If you changed the port, every connection instruction must use the new value. Keep the server’s local address stable on your home network so a router rule does not point at the wrong computer after a restart.

Create the router forwarding rule

  1. Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
  2. Find the port-forwarding, virtual-server or NAT section. The exact label depends on the router maker; Minecraft’s official Java server guidance directs users to their router documentation for the model-specific procedure.
  3. Create a rule that forwards the server port and protocol shown by your configuration to the host computer’s local address.
  4. Save or apply the rule, then restart the router only if its documentation requires it.

Do not publish your router administrator password, Minecraft account credentials or private local addresses. Give friends only the public address and server port they need to connect. If your internet provider changes the public address, you will need to distribute the new address unless you use a separate address-management service; that service is outside the StoneBlock 3 installer itself.

Allow Java through the host firewall

When the operating system asks whether to allow the Java process or server launcher through the firewall, permit the network scope required for your use. A rule that allows local-network traffic but blocks public traffic can be appropriate while testing; for internet play, the firewall must allow the forwarded server port to reach the Java process. Restrict the rule to the required port rather than disabling the firewall entirely.

Test from outside the home network

Ask a friend on a different connection to try the public address, or test from a device using mobile data. Testing from inside the same Wi-Fi network can produce a misleading result because some routers do not support loopback connections. If the outside test fails, check the server console, firewall rule, router destination address and configured port in that order.

Make every client match the server

Each player should install the exact same StoneBlock 3 release as the server, including the corresponding Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge components. A client that is merely labelled StoneBlock 3 but has a different release can fail during the handshake or disconnect after joining.

  • Record the server’s pack and version ID when you install it.
  • Have every player select that same release in the launcher they use for modpacks.
  • Do not add, remove or update individual mods on one client unless the server’s release includes the same change.
  • When a player reports a mismatch, compare the selected pack/version first; do not start by deleting random configuration files.
  • After an update, stop the server, back up the world, install the new server files in a controlled way and tell every player which client release to select.

Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see

The installer asks for pack or version IDs

The most common cause is a renamed installer. Download it again and preserve the original filename, or enter the IDs shown on the current Feed The Beast versions page exactly as requested. Using an old installer can also produce prompts because its filename no longer represents a current release.

Java is missing or the wrong version is reported

StoneBlock 3 requires Java 17. Re-run the official installer, which Feed The Beast says can download the correct Java version, or configure the launcher to use a Java 17 executable. Do not assume that a system Java installation used by another application is suitable. Confirm the Java path in the launch script or hosting panel and restart after changing it.

The script closes immediately

Run it from a terminal so the error remains visible. On macOS/Linux, verify that the script and installer have execute permission and that you are in the correct folder. On Windows, check that the script is launching from the directory containing the generated files rather than from a shortcut with a different working directory.

The server stops at the EULA message

Open the generated eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA and change the acceptance line only if you agree. Save the file with its original name and launch the script again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A player gets a mod or Forge mismatch

Compare the client’s StoneBlock 3 release with the server’s pack/version ID and Minecraft/Forge version. Reinstall the exact client release if necessary. Inspect the server console and the client’s latest log for the first mismatch named; later errors are often consequences rather than causes.

Local connections work but internet connections fail

Verify the port in server.properties, the router’s forwarding destination, the host firewall rule and the public address. Test from a genuinely external connection. A port-forwarding rule aimed at an old local address will fail even though the server itself is healthy.

The world lags or the host becomes unresponsive

Check whether the server has been given more memory than the computer can spare. Reduce the Java heap to leave operating-system headroom, close unrelated applications and watch the console for repeated errors. RAM is only one factor: active chunk generation, CPU load, storage latency and network conditions can all contribute. The published 4 GB minimum and 6 GB recommendation do not establish a guaranteed player count.

Backups, updates and routine maintenance

Make a usable backup

  1. Tell players to leave the world and issue the server’s normal stop command.
  2. Copy the world directory, server.properties, whitelist or operator files if you use them, and any pack-specific configuration that you have changed.
  3. Store at least one copy outside the live server folder. A second copy on another device protects against disk failure or accidental deletion.
  4. Label backups with the date and StoneBlock 3 version so you know which files belong together.

Do not overwrite your only backup with a copy made after corruption appears. Test that an archive can be opened and that it contains the world data before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply a pack update deliberately

  1. Record the current version and make a clean backup.
  2. Read the current Feed The Beast release information and download the matching server installer without renaming it.
  3. Decide whether to install into a new directory first. A parallel directory lets you preserve the old server while checking the new files.
  4. Start the updated server once with no players connected and watch the console for migration or mod errors.
  5. Tell players the exact new release to install, then test a client connection before reopening the server publicly.

Never replace a working world without a backup and a rollback plan. Modpack updates can alter configuration or world-generation behavior, so keeping the previous server directory is safer than deleting it immediately.

What a managed host changes

A managed service can remove the two tasks that home hosting causes most often: maintaining the machine and forwarding a router port. CurseForge describes its servers as deploying a modpack with a few clicks, with no manual file uploads or port forwarding, and documents plan tiers and region selection. That convenience does not remove the need to verify compatibility. Before ordering, confirm that StoneBlock 3 is currently available, that the provider supplies a matching server pack, how much RAM and CPU each plan includes, where the region is located, what backups cost, and how version updates are performed.

Question to ask Why it matters
Is the exact StoneBlock 3 release available? A listing for a similarly named pack or an older release may not match your clients.
How much RAM and CPU are included? The 4 GB minimum and 6 GB recommendation refer to the pack; provider allocations and upgrade limits differ.
Where is the server region? Geographic distance affects latency for everyone in the group.
Are automated backups included? Confirm retention, restore steps and whether backups cover the world and configuration.
Can you pin or select a specific pack version? Version control prevents clients and server from drifting apart after an automatic update.
What happens when you cancel? Find out how to download your world and configuration before the service ends.

Self-hosting is usually the better choice when one person wants full control and can maintain the network. Managed hosting is better when predictable administration, a selected region and a dashboard matter more than keeping the server on existing hardware. Compare total monthly cost, included resources and backup policy rather than choosing solely on the advertised starting tier.

Security and administration checklist

  • Keep the operating system, Java runtime and router firmware maintained according to their vendors’ guidance.
  • Use a separate server folder and avoid running downloaded files that are unrelated to the pack from it.
  • Share only the public connection address and port; never share account passwords or router credentials.
  • Give operator privileges only to people who need them.
  • Back up before every pack update and before making substantial configuration changes.
  • Review the console and logs after each restart so a failed mod load is noticed before players enter the world.
  • Keep a written record of the pack version, Java path, memory setting, port and backup location.
  • Stop the server cleanly before restarting the host or copying live world files.

Final launch checklist

  1. StoneBlock 3 server installer came from the current Feed The Beast server-files page.
  2. The installer filename was not changed.
  3. The server uses Java 17 and has at least 4 GB available, with 6 GB targeted only when the host has sufficient spare memory.
  4. The Minecraft EULA was accepted after being read.
  5. run.bat or run.sh starts the server without errors.
  6. A matching client joined locally and a second device tested the LAN connection.
  7. The router forwards the port shown in server.properties to the correct host address.
  8. The host firewall permits the Java server on the required network and port.
  9. An external player tested the public address.
  10. A clean backup exists before inviting the full group or applying updates.
