Host Solo Leveling – Shadows as a Java Edition server with the pack’s dedicated server ZIP, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge. Download the server file named Solo_Leveling_Shadows_Server_Pack.zip from the pack’s CurseForge Files area, install the matching client profile for every player, start the included Forge server launcher, and configure your firewall and router if friends will connect over the internet. The current listed release is SLS-1.1.5, updated September 7, 2026.

What this server actually is
Solo Leveling – Shadows is a CurseForge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 running on Forge. Its project description lists more than 400 mods, custom quests, a gate-progression system and multiplayer features. That scale affects every hosting decision: installation is more involved than starting a vanilla server, clients must be synchronized precisely, and the host should expect substantially greater resource use than an unmodified world.

The pack is not documented as a Bedrock add-on. Bedrock Dedicated Server is a separate Mojang product with its own software and requirements, so a Bedrock installation is not the supported route for this CurseForge/Forge pack.
Requirements before you begin
- A legally purchased Minecraft Java Edition account for each player.
- A computer that can remain online whenever the group wants to play, or a compatible managed Minecraft host.
- A compatible Java runtime. Mojang’s Java-server guidance requires a suitable JRE; a related Solo Leveling Forge project documents Java 17, but you should confirm the exact Java patch requirement in the Shadows server-pack README before settling on a version.
- The exact

- Permission to create firewall rules and, for remote play, change port-forwarding settings on the router.

Download the matching server and client files
1. Select the release
Open the Solo Leveling – Shadows project on CurseForge and use its Files section. Select the current release shown there (SLS-1.1.5 at the time of writing, listed as updated September 7, 2026) rather than combining files from different releases. Download the server-pack ZIP whose filename is Solo_Leveling_Shadows_Server_Pack.zip.

2. Give every player the same client profile
Each person joining needs the client profile associated with that same release. The server and all clients must agree on Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and every mod version. A player using a newer or older profile can be refused during login, disconnect during registry synchronization, or enter a world with missing content.
3. Preserve a clean copy
Keep the original ZIPs in a separate download folder. Do not edit the archive, remove a mod because its name looks optional, or mix a server ZIP from one release with a client profile from another. Make a second copy of the downloaded files before you begin so an update or failed extraction can be rolled back.

Install Java and prepare a dedicated folder
- Install Minecraft Java Edition on the host computer and install a Java runtime supported by the pack. If the server launcher reports an unsupported class version or Java path, fix Java before changing the mod files.
- Create a folder used only for this server, such as a directory named
SoloLevelingShadowsServer. Avoid placing it inside a temporary Downloads folder or inside a client instance. - Extract every file from
Solo_Leveling_Shadows_Server_Pack.zipinto that folder. Keep the directory structure supplied by the pack; moving individual libraries or configuration folders can prevent Forge from starting. - Read the server-pack README, if included. It is the authoritative place for launcher instructions, Java notes, required arguments and any pack-specific first-run step.
Start the Forge server for the first time
- Run the Forge server launcher supplied in the extracted folder. On Windows this may be a batch launcher; on Linux or macOS it may be a shell script or a server JAR. Use the file included by the pack instead of guessing a different Forge installer command.
- Allow the first startup to finish. Forge normally creates configuration files, libraries and a world directory before stopping or requesting confirmation. The first launch can take considerably longer than later starts because the pack contains more than 400 mods.
- Open the generated
eula.txtonly after reading Minecraft’s EULA. If you agree to it, change the setting toeula=true, save the file, and start the same launcher again. Do not treat this setting as a way to bypass the license terms. - Watch the console for a message that the server has finished loading and is ready to accept players. If startup stops with a Java, Forge or mod error, keep the complete log; changing several files at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- Stop the server from its console command or launcher procedure before closing the terminal. A clean stop lets the world save instead of risking region or player-data corruption.
Memory and performance: what is and is not known
The project page does not publish a tested minimum RAM figure for this server. Do not copy a numeric “minimum” from a vanilla-server guide and present it as an official requirement. More than 400 mods make the pack materially heavier than vanilla, but the usable allocation depends on the number of players, view distance, loaded dimensions, world generation and the host’s other workloads.

A practical tuning method
- Start with a conservative allocation that leaves the operating system and background services room to work. Giving Java nearly all physical memory can make the host swap or become unresponsive.
- Test with the largest expected group online. Travel through gates, generate new terrain and visit the dimensions your players will use; an idle title screen is not a meaningful load test.
- Observe startup time, in-game tick behavior, garbage-collection pauses and system memory pressure. If the server lags while the machine still has free memory, investigate CPU load, disk speed, world generation and view distance instead of blindly adding RAM.
- Change one setting at a time, record the result, and keep a known-good launcher configuration. Do not copy JVM arguments intended for a different Minecraft or Forge version without checking the pack documentation.
Keep the server files on a local SSD where possible, exclude the world folder from automatic cloud-sync conflict handling, and avoid running heavy backups or scans during peak play. These are operational recommendations, not a published hardware benchmark for the pack.
Connect from the host and from the same network
Host computer
Launch Minecraft with the matching client profile, open Multiplayer, add the server, and use localhost as the address when playing on the same computer that runs the server. This route does not require the router’s public address.
Another computer on your home network
Use the host computer’s local network address. Ensure the operating-system firewall allows the Java server process or the server port selected in server.properties. If the two computers are on guest Wi-Fi networks or client isolation is enabled, they may be unable to reach each other even when the server is running.

Friends outside your home
- Give the Java server an allowed rule in the host firewall. Create the narrowest rule that permits the server’s configured port rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page and forward the server’s configured port to the host computer’s local address. Reserve that local address in the router or configure a static address so the rule does not point to a different device later.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. If inbound forwarding cannot work because the router has no directly reachable public address, ask the provider about a public address or use a managed host instead of repeatedly changing local settings.
- Give friends the public IP address or a DNS name, never your private home-network address. Do not post the address publicly, and remove the forwarding rule when the server is no longer in use.
- Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s network or a phone hotspot. A successful connection from inside the same LAN does not prove that internet forwarding works.
Mojang’s official Java-server guidance specifically warns that firewall and port-forwarding configuration may be needed for home hosting. Keep the router firmware current and share the address only with people you trust.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting bill and gives you direct access to every file, log and configuration. It also makes you responsible for Java, operating-system updates, backups, firewall rules, router forwarding, power failures and keeping the machine online. Mojang describes subscription hosting as an alternative for people who do not want to configure a home network.

Backups, updates and safe maintenance
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, configuration directories and any scripts or custom settings. Label the backup with the pack release and date. Keep at least one copy away from the server computer; a disk failure can destroy both the live world and a backup stored beside it.
Update as a coordinated operation
- Read the new release notes and server README.
- Make a verified backup and, if possible, test the update on a copy of the world.
- Replace the server pack using the documented procedure; do not overwrite a live world while the process is running.
- Install the matching client release for every player before reopening the server.
- Start the server, inspect the log for missing or changed mods, and test quests, gates and player inventories.
- Keep the previous server files and backup until everyone has connected successfully. If the update breaks the world, stop the server and restore the rollback copy instead of continuing to play on a damaged state.
Troubleshooting common failures
The launcher closes immediately or reports a class-version error
Check the Java executable selected by the launcher and compare it with the version required in the pack README. A related Solo Leveling Forge project specifies Java 17, but that guidance should not override the Shadows README if it names a different patch or distribution. Re-run the supplied launcher after correcting Java and retain the full log.
Forge says mods are missing or incompatible
Confirm that the server ZIP and each client profile came from the same release. Do not solve a mismatch by downloading individual mods from unrelated pages; a pack can rely on exact versions, configuration files and dependencies. Re-extract a clean copy if files were manually deleted or overwritten.
The server starts but friends cannot join
First test localhost on the host, then test the host’s local address from another computer. If local play works, inspect the firewall rule, router forwarding target and whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT. Friends outside the network must use the public address or DNS name, not the private address.

Compare Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, pack release and mod lists on both sides. A client profile that launches successfully can still fail the server handshake if one mod or configuration file differs. Have the affected player reinstall the exact matching profile rather than adding files manually.
World generation feels slow or the server ticks behind
Test with fewer simultaneous new chunks, check CPU and disk activity, and lower distance-related settings gradually. Verify that the host is not paging memory or competing with backups and other heavy applications. Because no tested RAM minimum is published, use measured startup and gameplay behavior to tune the machine instead of relying on an unverified number.
