SkyFactory 5 server requirements at a glance
SkyFactory 5 is a Forge modpack, not a vanilla Minecraft server. The server and every connecting client must agree on the complete modded stack. A client that launches a different pack revision, Minecraft release, or loader build will normally fail during the handshake or disconnect with a missing-mod error.

The most important distinction is the archive name. The client package contains a launcher profile and client-side setup; it is not the supported source for a dedicated server. Download the file explicitly identified as the server pack.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting
Self-hosting is appropriate when you have a computer that can stay online and you want direct access to files, configuration, logs, and backups. Managed hosting is useful when you would rather operate a control panel than install Java and Forge, configure a firewall, forward a router port, and maintain uptime yourself.

Prepare the computer for a self-hosted server
Install the correct Java runtime
- Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the computer that will run the server. A 32-bit Java installation cannot use memory efficiently and may prevent a large modpack from starting.
- Open a terminal or command prompt and check that the runtime selected by your system is Java 17. If another Java version is reported, correct the system path or use the runtime path supplied by your Java installer when launching the server.
- Run the server on a machine with enough free memory and storage for the operating system, Java, the world, logs, backups, and other applications. Do not reserve every available gigabyte for Java; the operating system and file cache still need working space.
Create a dedicated server directory
Make a new folder used only for this SkyFactory installation. A dedicated directory keeps the generated world, configuration, libraries, crash reports, and logs together and makes backups or a later version test safer. Avoid placing the files inside an unrelated client instance folder.
Plan access and backups before first launch
- Decide who will be an operator and who can join. Keep operator privileges limited to trusted players.
- Choose a backup location on a different disk or computer if possible. A backup stored in the same folder does not protect you from disk failure.
- If the computer is shared, create a separate operating-system account or otherwise restrict write access to the server folder.
- Plan when the server can restart. A modded world can take several minutes to load, especially on its first launch.
Install the SkyFactory 5 server pack
1. Download the separate server archive
Open the SkyFactory 5 project on CurseForge, go to Files, and select the server download for the release you are installing. For the version identified above, the filename is SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip. Do not substitute the regular client ZIP, even if its version number looks identical.
2. Extract every server-pack file
Extract the archive into the dedicated folder. Keep the included configuration files, mods, scripts, libraries, and installer files together. Do not launch the server from inside the ZIP, and do not move only the visible JAR files while leaving the scripts or configuration behind.
3. Run the included Forge installer script
Use the installer script supplied for your operating system. The script installs Forge and creates the libraries and run scripts needed to start the modded server. On a desktop operating system, this normally means running the supplied Windows script or the supplied shell script rather than inventing a new command.

If the script closes immediately, launch it from a terminal so that error text remains visible. The most common causes are an incorrect Java path, a non-64-bit runtime, an incomplete extraction, or a script that lacks execute permission on a Unix-like system. Correct the underlying issue and run the supplied installer again; do not delete random libraries to make the error disappear.
4. Review the generated JVM arguments
After Forge installation, inspect the launch files and JVM argument file generated by the pack. Set the maximum memory to a value your computer can sustain while leaving headroom for the operating system and any other services. Player count, loaded chunks, automation, world age, and simultaneous applications all affect the amount required, so the published 6 GB client recommendation must not be treated as a guaranteed server allocation.
Start conservatively, watch memory use and garbage-collection pauses, and increase the limit only when the machine has free physical memory. Assigning more memory than the computer can actually provide causes swapping and can make the server slower rather than faster.
5. Start the server once and accept the EULA
- Run the generated server start script.
- Wait for Minecraft to create
eula.txtand stop or exit as instructed by the console. - Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, and save the file. You must agree to Minecraft’s EULA yourself; changing this setting does not transfer that responsibility. - Run the start script again and leave the process running until Forge and all mods finish their first load. The initial launch can be substantially slower than later starts because libraries, registries, and the world are being created.
Do not invite players while the console is still generating files or reporting registry and mod-loading work. Stopping during that stage can leave an incomplete setup and make the next diagnosis harder.

6. Confirm a clean startup
Look for a final server-ready message in the console and check that a world folder, configuration files, and logs were created. If the process exits, read the first meaningful error and its surrounding stack trace rather than focusing on the last line. A Java, Forge, missing-file, or memory error points to a different fix.
Configure networking so friends can join
Local testing
Join from the same computer using the local server address shown by your operating system, or test from another computer on the same home network using the host computer’s private address. This separates a modpack or Java problem from an internet-routing problem. If local clients cannot connect, fix the server installation before changing router settings.

Firewall rules
Allow the Java runtime or the server application through the host operating system’s firewall on the network type you actually use. A rule that allows only public networks, or only blocks Java after an update, can produce a timeout even while the server console appears healthy. Restrict the rule to the server’s game port and trusted network scope where your firewall supports that control.
Router port forwarding
For internet players, forward the port configured in the server’s properties file from the router to the host computer’s private address. Minecraft commonly uses port 25565, but use the value present in your configuration if it differs. Reserve the host computer’s private address in the router so that a reboot does not send traffic to a different device.

Do not publish your private address. Give friends your public address or a hostname that resolves to it, and tell them the port only when it is not the default they are using. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding; in that case, request a reachable address from the provider or use managed hosting instead.
External connection test
Have a friend test from a different network, such as mobile data. A successful test from inside your home can be misleading because some routers do not support hairpin NAT. If the external test times out, check the server process, firewall rule, router forwarding target, public address, and whether the provider blocks inbound connections.
Install the matching client and join
- Each player installs the SkyFactory 5 profile through CurseForge and selects the same release represented by the server pack.
- Confirm that the client profile uses the same Minecraft version, Forge loader, and Java major version as the server. Do not add or remove individual mods unless the pack documentation for that release explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Launch the profile once at the main menu. This creates client-side files and catches Java or launcher errors before you troubleshoot networking.
- Choose Multiplayer, select Add Server, enter a recognizable name, and enter the server address. Use the host’s private address for a LAN connection and the public address or hostname for an internet connection.
- Connect only after the server console reports that it is ready. The first connection can take longer while the client downloads textures and builds caches.
A mismatch can look like a network failure. “Missing mods,” registry disconnects, and an immediate return to the server list usually mean the client profile is not identical to the server, not that the router is broken.
Operate the server safely
Starting and stopping
Use the pack’s generated start script so that Forge receives the intended libraries and JVM arguments. To stop a running server, issue the console’s normal stop command and wait for the save to complete; closing the terminal or killing Java can corrupt region or player data.

Backups
Stop the server before making a full copy of the world and configuration, or use a backup method that is explicitly safe for a live process. Keep several dated generations and periodically restore one to a separate test directory. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption.
Monitoring
Watch the console for repeated tick delays, out-of-memory errors, failed chunk saves, and mod exceptions. Record when a problem began and which change preceded it. This makes it possible to roll back one configuration or mod update instead of rebuilding the entire installation.
Updating
- Read the current SkyFactory Files listing and confirm that the new release still uses the Minecraft and Forge combination you plan to run.
- Make a complete backup of the world, configuration, scripts, and server pack.
- Install the new server pack in a separate test directory rather than overwriting the working server.
- Copy only the settings and world data you have intentionally reviewed. Reusing every old configuration file can carry forward incompatible options.
- Start the test copy, allow migrations to finish, and connect with a client profile of the exact same release.
- Schedule downtime, announce the change, and replace the live installation only after the test succeeds.
Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
The installer says Java is missing or the wrong version
Check the Java version from the same terminal or script context that launches the installer. A system can have Java 17 installed while the script still finds an older Java first. Correct the path, use the 64-bit installation, and rerun the supplied Forge installer.
The server stops after creating eula.txt
Open the file and change only the value from false to true. Save it in the server directory, then launch again. If the file is recreated, you may be editing a different folder from the one used by the start script.

Verify that the archive was fully extracted and that you used the server pack. Re-extract into a clean directory if files are missing. Read the first mod or library named in the error, because the final “server stopped” line is usually only a consequence.
The process runs out of memory
Lower the number of other applications running on the machine, confirm that the Java process is 64-bit, and set a realistic heap limit with free physical memory left for the operating system. If the world and player count have grown, move the server to a machine with more available memory rather than assigning an unsafe value to the existing one.

Friends time out but LAN players can connect
Check the host firewall, the router forwarding rule, the target private address, and the public address you gave friends. Test from a genuinely external network. If your connection is behind carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding will not work; use a reachable network service or managed hosting.
A client is rejected for missing or extra mods
Have the player delete or repair the launcher profile and install the exact server release. Do not try to solve a handshake mismatch by copying random JARs between client and server. Every player should launch the same pack profile rather than a manually edited collection.

Stop using the upgraded copy and restore the pre-update backup. Test the new server against a copy of the world, review configuration changes, and confirm that the client profile was upgraded at the same time. Never overwrite your only known-good world while diagnosing an update.
When managed hosting is the better fit
Choose a managed service when you want the provider to supply the always-on machine, panel, and basic deployment path. CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation describes selecting a modpack, plan, region, and server details, then paying; supported packs with matching server files can be deployed without manual uploads or router port forwarding.
Before ordering, verify these points in writing for the exact SkyFactory release:
- Whether the service currently lists the required server pack and Forge version.
- How much memory and storage the plan provides, and whether limits are hard caps.
- Player slots, CPU allocation, location, latency, and whether the region can be changed.
- Automatic and on-demand backup frequency, retention, and restore procedure.
- How you change modpack versions and whether you can upload or edit configuration files.
- Support hours, crash recovery, migration options, cancellation terms, and data export.
Managed hosting reduces installation and networking work, but it does not remove the need to match client versions, maintain backups, or read update notes. You remain responsible for who receives the server address and who has operator access.
Security and reliability checklist
- Use a dedicated server directory and a Java 17 runtime kept current through your operating system’s normal update process.
- Give operator status only to people who need it, and remove it when access changes.
- Keep the server address private to the intended group; publish it only through channels you trust.
- Back up the world and configuration before every modpack update or major configuration change.
- Keep at least one backup off the server computer and test a restore periodically.
- Document the installed pack release, Java version, memory setting, router rule, and backup location so another administrator can recover the service.
- Stop the server cleanly before moving files, changing the Java runtime, or taking a manual world copy.
