The important 2026 qualification is version 1.2: Coffee Stain lists Satisfactory 1.2 as released on June 2, 2026, with update 1.2.4.0 fixes dated August 11, 2026. The detailed port instructions that are publicly available were written for version 1.1, so use them as a starting point and verify the current 1.2 documentation before opening a permanent port range.

What you need before installing
Prepare a machine that can remain powered on whenever your factory should be available. The official wiki’s community guidance covers 64-bit Windows 10/11 and Windows Server editions, plus Linux distributions such as Debian and Ubuntu. Treat those operating-system notes as wiki guidance rather than a guaranteed 1.2 support matrix; check the current 1.2 documentation for your exact release.
- 64-bit x86-64 hardware: the wiki guidance does not list ARM support.
- A stable wired or otherwise reliable network connection: remote players need to reach the host consistently.
- Administrative access: you will install software, create firewall rules and possibly change router NAT settings.
- Storage for the server files and saves: leave room for updates and backups, not just the initial download.
- A current copy of the game and server software: keep the server build aligned with the clients you expect to use.
Hardware is a baseline, not a 1.2 guarantee
The wiki’s rough community recommendations are a recent x86-64 CPU and 8 GB of RAM. It suggests 16 GB when the save is large or more than four players will connect. Actual demand depends heavily on single-thread CPU performance, simultaneous players and the size and complexity of the factory. These figures are not a Coffee Stain 1.2 specification, so use monitoring and the current documentation before treating them as hard requirements.

- [Games need exclusions and runtimes, not malware]Some customers ask why our retro game drives can trigger Windows Security warnings. Many game files are older DLLs that Windows Defender sometimes flags as threats. They are not viruses or malware—just old or uncommon code causing false positives. We temporarily add them to the exclusion list so they aren't blocked, then re-enable Security to keep your PC protected. Many classic games also need legacy VC++ and DirectX runtimes, which modern Windows doesn't include by default. Installing them ensures compatibility and smooth play. Your safety matters to us—these are safe, standard steps for retro games.

Choose where the server will run
| Approach | Recurring cost | Control | What you administer | Networking effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host on your own PC, spare computer or virtual machine | No server-rental fee, but you pay the machine’s electricity and internet costs | Full access to files, launch options, saves and update timing | Operating-system updates, server updates, backups, firewall, router and recovery | You normally configure local firewall rules and router port forwarding; carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound connections |
| Managed game-server host | Monthly fee set by the provider | Usually control through a web panel, with less access to the underlying system | The provider generally handles the machine, network and basic restart operations; you still manage saves, settings and game-version choices | Often simpler because the provider supplies a public endpoint, but verify its current Satisfactory 1.2 support and backup policy |
Self-hosting is the better fit when you want complete control and already have an always-on machine. Managed hosting is useful when nobody wants to maintain a home server or troubleshoot residential NAT, but compare the provider’s current 1.2 compatibility, update process, save access, backup retention and cancellation terms before paying. No particular provider is required to follow this guide.
Install the dedicated-server files
The dedicated-server application can be obtained through the Steam client, SteamCMD or the Epic Games Store. The installation route does not determine which PC storefront your players use: the dedicated-server wiki says the client store and the source of the server binary do not have to match.
Option 1: Steam client
- Sign in to the Steam account that will install the server software.
- Find the Satisfactory dedicated-server entry in the Steam library or tools list and install it to a deliberate, easily backed-up folder.
- Record that folder path. You will need it for the launch command, firewall exceptions and save-file management.
- Use Steam’s update controls whenever the server build changes. Schedule updates only when players are offline, because a build mismatch can prevent connections.
Option 2: SteamCMD
The wiki identifies Steam App ID 1690800 for the dedicated server. On Linux, its example command is:
Rank #2
- Create, build and run the most realistic city you can imagine
- Connect your metropolis with other cities you've created to form a massive region of SimCities
- Sculpt mountains, gouge valleys, and seed forests
- Deploy police cruisers and fire trucks to the scene
- For 1 player
steamcmd +force_install_dir ~/SatisfactoryDedicatedServer +login anonymous +app_update 1690800 validate +quit
~/SatisfactoryDedicatedServer is only an example destination. Replace it with an absolute or home-relative path that you have chosen deliberately; do not paste it blindly if your service account, disk layout or backup job uses another location. The validate argument checks the installed files and can repair a partial download. Run SteamCMD again when you intentionally update the server, and keep the command in your maintenance notes so the same path is used every time.
Option 3: Epic Games Store
The server software is also distributed through Epic. Follow the current Epic installation flow, choose a known install directory and note the executable and save locations. Because the available evidence does not establish the exact 1.2 Epic labels or launch arguments, do not assume a Steam-specific path or menu name applies to that installation.
Start it once, then make a change plan
Launch the installed server according to the current 1.2 instructions for your operating system. The first start may create configuration and save directories. Stop it cleanly after those files appear, copy the configuration and save folders into your backup plan, and then make networking changes one at a time. A server that starts locally but is unreachable from outside usually has a firewall, NAT or port-advertising problem rather than a damaged installation.

The available sources do not establish a complete 1.2 server-manager sequence, including exact menu labels, claim steps or password fields. Verify those details in the current in-game and official documentation instead of relying on an older tutorial. Do not invent a password or assume that a setting shown for 1.1 still exists in the same location.
Ports and router forwarding: what is known, and what must be checked
Coffee Stain’s official 1.1 dedicated-server announcement is the primary published port reference available here. It says the regular game port is 7777 and that reliable messaging uses TCP 8888 by default. For a single server, the announcement states: “If hosting a single server, port 8888 TCP must be open by default.” Its allocation strategy searches from 8888 across a configurable range of up to 512 ports. Those values are 1.1 instructions, not verified 1.2 requirements.
The 1.1 notes also describe TCP and UDP use of the regular game port 7777. Before publishing a firewall rule or forwarding a fixed range for a 1.2 server, check Coffee Stain’s current documentation and the server’s generated configuration. If 1.2 changed the ports, allocation behavior or protocol requirements, the current build takes precedence over every older guide.

Apply the networking changes in the right order
- Give the host a stable local address. Create a DHCP reservation in the router or configure a carefully managed static address. A forwarding rule breaks when the server receives a different address after a reboot.
- Allow the server through the host firewall. Prefer an application rule or narrowly scoped rules for the documented server ports and protocols. Avoid disabling the entire firewall as a diagnostic shortcut; if you do a brief test, restore protection immediately.
- Forward the documented ports on the router. Select the host’s reserved local address, enter the current 1.2 external and internal ports, and choose TCP, UDP or both exactly as the current documentation requires. Do not copy the 1.1 range without checking.
- Test from outside your home network. A friend on another connection or a mobile hotspot is a more useful test than connecting from the same LAN, because many routers do not support reliable NAT loopback.
- Record the public address or supported discovery method. A changing residential public IP may require a dynamic-DNS service, but that does not replace correct port forwarding.
When external and internal ports differ
NAT remapping can make the server listen on one port internally while players reach a different external port. Coffee Stain’s 1.1 announcement warns that clients must reach the correct reliable-messaging port and that remapping can break connection setup unless the server knows the external value. It documents the launch/configuration concepts -ExternalReliablePort= and ExternalPortRangeBegin. Use the exact syntax and placement documented for your current 1.2 build; do not assume a 1.1 argument is unchanged. If the server appears online but remote players time out during connection, compare the router’s external mapping with the value the server advertises.
Connect from Steam and Epic
Steam and Epic PC players can connect across storefronts. The dedicated-server wiki explicitly says the client store and server-binary source do not have to match, so a Steam-installed server can serve Epic PC clients and vice versa, provided the game and server builds are compatible.
Do not extend that statement to consoles. The same wiki result says dedicated servers are unavailable for console releases. A general store listing that mentions cross-platform play is not proof that a console player can join a dedicated server. Treat PC storefront interoperability and console dedicated-server support as separate questions.
Keeping the server healthy
Updates and version alignment
Track the major and patch version explicitly. The official announcement index records Satisfactory 1.2 on June 2, 2026 and 1.2.4.0 fixes on August 11, 2026. Before updating, announce downtime, make a dated save backup, update the server files, start it once, and have one player verify loading and saving before inviting the whole group. If clients receive a version-mismatch error, confirm that every player has the same current game branch and that the server update completed successfully.
Backups
- Stop the server cleanly before copying active save files.
- Keep several dated generations, including one from before each game update.
- Store at least one copy outside the server machine so a disk failure or accidental deletion does not remove every generation.
- Periodically restore a copy to a separate test location; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Performance checks
Watch CPU utilization, memory pressure, disk space and network errors while the busiest number of players is online. Single-thread CPU performance and factory complexity can become limiting even when total CPU usage appears moderate. Large saves and more than four players are the situations for which the wiki suggests considering 16 GB of RAM. If the host swaps, crashes or saves slowly, first reduce competing workloads and verify free disk space before changing game settings.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts, but nobody outside the house can join
- Confirm the host’s current local IP matches the router forwarding rule.
- Check the operating-system firewall profile and rule scope.
- Test from a genuinely external network, not only from the same LAN.
- Verify that the public IP belongs to your router. Carrier-grade NAT or a second upstream router can prevent inbound forwarding; put the forwarding rule on the device that actually owns the public address or ask the ISP whether inbound service is available.
- Re-check the current 1.2 port and protocol requirements rather than assuming the 1.1 7777/8888 arrangement.
Players reach the server list but fail during connection
- Compare the external port mapping with the server’s advertised reliable-messaging port.
- If you remapped ports, configure the current equivalent of
-ExternalReliablePort=orExternalPortRangeBeginexactly as documented for 1.2. - Look for a blocked or partially forwarded reliable-messaging range; the 1.1 implementation could search up to 512 ports from 8888.
One storefront works and the other does not
- Confirm both clients are PC versions and fully updated.
- Confirm the dedicated-server build is current; storefront ownership alone should not prevent a connection.
- Check whether a platform account, privacy setting or current server-manager requirement has changed in the 1.2 documentation.
The server is unstable after an update
- Stop it, preserve the current logs and save, and verify the installed files.
- Check that the update did not leave mixed old and new files; SteamCMD’s
validateoperation can repair an incomplete installation. - Test a backup save separately before risking the live world.
- Review current 1.2 release notes for known fixes rather than reverting blindly to an older build.
A practical launch checklist
- Confirm the host operating system and x86-64 architecture against current 1.2 support information.
- Choose self-hosting or a managed service based on the control and maintenance trade-off.
- Install the dedicated server through Steam, SteamCMD (App ID
1690800) or Epic. - Set an intentional install and save path, then create a backup routine.
- Start the server once and verify that configuration files and saves are created.
- Read the current 1.2 port and server-manager documentation.
- Reserve the host’s local IP, configure the firewall and forward only the documented ports and protocols.
- Configure the external reliable port/range if your NAT mapping changes it.
- Test from outside the LAN with both a Steam PC client and an Epic PC client if you need cross-store compatibility.
- Record the version, launch arguments, forwarded ports and backup location for whoever will maintain the server.
