To host a Prominence II Classic server, first choose the exact 1.20.1 branch your players will use: Forge v2.2.0, which has the named Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip, or NeoForge v2.8.0, the newest listed Classic release. Download the matching server pack, extract it to a dedicated folder, follow its included launch instructions, accept Minecraft’s EULA, configure the server, and expose it through port forwarding or a VPN. Every player must use Minecraft: Java Edition with the same Minecraft version, Prominence build, and loader.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Choose the correct Prominence Classic branch first
“Prominence Classic” refers to the Prominence II Classic project. It has separate Forge and NeoForge releases, even though both target Minecraft 1.20.1. Treat the loader as part of the version: a Forge client cannot join a NeoForge server simply because both say 1.20.1.

| Branch | Minecraft version | Classic release identified | Server-pack status | Release date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forge | 1.20.1 | Prominence II [Classic] v2.2.0 | Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip is listed |
January 29, 2024 |
| NeoForge | 1.20.1 | Prominence II Classic v2.8.0 | Use a server pack that matches this NeoForge release | July 12, 2024 |
The project page displayed 1,129,966 downloads in the page snapshot dated October 15, 2026. The Forge server-pack archive is listed at 1.0 GB. Those figures describe the project page and archive, not the amount of RAM your running server will consume.
Which branch should your group use?
- Use Forge v2.2.0 if your existing client installation is the Forge Classic build or if you want the branch with the explicitly named server archive.
- Use NeoForge v2.8.0 if everyone is installing that NeoForge Classic release and you have a server pack intended for the same release.
- Do not combine a Forge client with a NeoForge server, or one Classic build’s mods and configs with another build.
Write the chosen loader and release on a shared note before anyone downloads files. This simple check prevents the most common “incompatible mod list” failure.

What you need before installing
Host computer and Java
You need a 64-bit computer that can keep the server process running while players connect. Install a 64-bit Java runtime suitable for the selected pack. Prominence Classic’s authoritative project information does not publish a Classic-specific Java version, so do not assume a Java requirement copied from a different Prominence edition is correct.
After installing Java, verify that the executable is available in your operating system’s terminal with java -version. The command confirms that Java is callable; the server-pack instructions remain the authority on whether that runtime is suitable and on which launch command or script to use.
Dedicated storage
Create a new folder used only for this server. Extract the complete archive into it rather than opening individual files from inside the ZIP. Keep the server pack’s mods, configurations, scripts, libraries, and other files together. Moving only the mods folder or copying files from a client installation produces a different server and makes troubleshooting much harder.
Players and client software
Prominence is a Minecraft: Java Edition project with client-and-server support. Every player needs Minecraft Java Edition and the same Prominence Classic version and loader as the server. A player on the right Minecraft version but the wrong loader, or on the right loader but a different Classic build, still cannot reliably connect.

Network and operating-system access
For people outside your home network, you need either router port forwarding or a VPN path that places participants on a shared virtual network. You also need permission to allow Java or the supplied server program through the host computer’s firewall. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or your router does not permit forwarding, a VPN can be the practical alternative.
Download the matching server pack
- Open the Prominence II Classic project on CurseForge and go to its Files page.
- Identify the loader and release before clicking Download. For the Forge route, select
Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip, uploaded January 29, 2024. - For the NeoForge route, select a server pack explicitly associated with Prominence II Classic v2.8.0. Do not substitute the Forge archive.
- Save the ZIP in a temporary download location, then compare its name with the branch recorded for your group.
- Extract it into the dedicated server directory. Do not merge it with another Prominence edition or an older Classic installation.
The official hosting guidance for a related Prominence edition specifically tells users to use the CurseForge website rather than the app. For Classic, the important practical rule is the same: obtain the server archive from the project’s Files listing and verify the exact loader and release shown there.
Install and start the server at home
The archive’s included instructions determine the launch script and any required JVM arguments. The Classic information available publicly does not guarantee a script filename, so do not paste a launch command from another Prominence edition. Use the supplied script or command for your operating system.
- Extract the archive. Confirm that the server directory contains the pack’s expected scripts, libraries, mods, and configuration files.
- Read the included instructions. Look for operating-system notes, Java prerequisites, memory settings, first-start steps, and any required file permissions.
- Run the supplied start script or command. Launch it from the server directory so relative paths resolve to the files that came with the pack.
- Watch the first startup. The process may create additional files and stop while waiting for the EULA decision. Read the console output instead of repeatedly double-clicking the script.
- Accept the EULA when prompted. Open the generated EULA file only if the instructions direct you to do so, change the acceptance value as required by Minecraft, save it, and start the supplied command again.
- Wait for a ready state. Allow world generation and initial mod setup to finish before connecting. The first launch can take longer than later launches because files and world data are being created.
- Stop cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop command or the method documented in the pack instructions. Avoid killing the process while it is writing world data.
Do not delete unfamiliar files simply because they were generated on first launch. Modded servers commonly create configuration, cache, library, and world files that are needed on subsequent starts.

Configure the world and access controls
After the EULA step, use the generated server.properties and the pack’s documented configuration files to tailor the server. Make one change at a time and keep a copy of working settings.
Basic settings to review
- Server name or message of the day: identify the world in the multiplayer list.
- Difficulty: choose the setting appropriate for your group before regular play begins.
- Operator accounts: grant operator status only to trusted administrators. Operator access can change the world and server settings.
- Whitelist: enable and maintain it when the server is intended for a private group.
- Other
server.propertiesvalues: review the settings relevant to player access, gameplay, and networking rather than copying a configuration from another pack.
Restart after configuration changes when the setting or the pack instructions require it. Keep the server console available while testing so errors are visible.
Back up before upgrades or replacements
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and the server’s important configuration data to a separate location, and label the backup with the Classic branch and release. Always back up before changing versions, replacing the server pack, or installing a new mod set. A backup on the same disk protects against a bad update but not against disk failure, theft, or a damaged computer, so an additional location is preferable.

Port forwarding
Cinderstone’s official hosting guide identifies Minecraft’s default port as 25565. Forward that port from your router to the local IP address of the computer running the server, then allow the server program through the host firewall. The exact router labels differ, but the required mapping is the external Minecraft port to the host computer’s internal address.

- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
- Give the host computer a stable local address, using a DHCP reservation or a static configuration supported by your network.
- In the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule for TCP traffic on port 25565 to that local address. If your server instructions specify another port, follow those instructions instead.
- Permit Java or the server executable in the operating system firewall when prompted.
- Start the server and have a player outside your home network test the connection using your public address and the configured port.
Do not publish your public address in an open forum. Give it only to the people who need to connect, and remove the forwarding rule if you retire the server.
VPN alternative
If your ISP or router prevents inbound forwarding, a VPN such as Radmin VPN can create a shared virtual network for the host and players. Everyone must install and join the same VPN network, and players then use the host’s VPN address. This avoids ordinary router forwarding but adds another application, account, and network path to maintain.

- The server is stopped, or the host computer has gone to sleep, restarted, or lost power.
- The router rule points to an old local IP address.
- The firewall allows the server on the private network but blocks it on the active network profile.
- The player is using a different loader, Minecraft version, or Prominence Classic build.
- The ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, so the router’s public address is not directly reachable.
- The player is testing from inside the same home network with a public address that the router cannot loop back to; test locally with the host’s local address first.
Keep a self-hosted server available
A self-hosted world is online only while the host computer and network are available. Cinderstone’s guide notes that sleep, restart, or power loss takes the server offline. Configure the operating system so the computer does not sleep during play, and make sure updates or scheduled reboots do not interrupt sessions unexpectedly.
The owner is responsible for backups, crash recovery, mod updates, Java and JVM settings, port forwarding, DDoS protection, and moderation tools. Keep a written recovery checklist containing the server folder location, the chosen Classic branch, backup locations, router rule, administrator accounts, and the pack’s documented launch procedure.

Updates without destroying the world
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a dated backup of the world and configuration.
- Read the release notes and confirm that the proposed pack uses the same loader family or provides a supported migration path.
- Install the new files in a separate test directory when possible, rather than overwriting the known-good server.
- Start the test copy, check the console for errors, and join with a client on the exact matching build.
- Promote the tested copy only after the world loads and key gameplay systems work.
Never assume that a newer NeoForge release can replace the Forge v2.2.0 server pack, or that a client update automatically updates the server. Loader, Minecraft version, and Prominence build must remain aligned.

| Consideration | Self-hosting at home | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription cost | No hosting subscription, but you pay the electricity and use your own equipment and internet connection. | Monthly hosting cost; the provider supplies the server infrastructure. |
| Availability | Online only while your computer, power, and connection remain available. | Can remain online while your personal computer is off, subject to the provider’s service. |
| Setup | You extract the pack, run its instructions, configure Java, firewall, and router, and solve failures yourself. | May offer one-click installation, web controls, backups, and resource changes, but you must verify exact Classic support. |
| Maintenance | You handle backups, crashes, updates, moderation, and network security. | The provider may supply backups, DDoS protection, and scaling features; your pack and configuration still require oversight. |
| Performance variables | Depends on your CPU, memory, storage, upload bandwidth, and electricity. | Depends on the purchased plan, host hardware, allocation policy, and network quality. |
Managed hosting is useful when the owner cannot leave a computer running or does not want to manage router and recovery tasks. Before paying, ask the provider to confirm support for the exact Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0 Classic build. The official hosting page reviewed does not explicitly list Classic support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much RAM does Classic need?
No authoritative Classic-specific minimum RAM figure, CPU benchmark, or player-count recommendation is published in the available official material. Do not present a number from another Prominence edition as a Classic requirement.
Cinderstone publishes guidance of 8 GB for three to four players plus 1 GB per additional player, but that figure is for managed hosting of Prominence II: Hasturian Era, not a measured Prominence Classic requirement. It can help explain why modded hosting plans are often larger than vanilla plans, but it does not establish the correct allocation for Classic.
Instead, begin with the server pack’s own instructions, monitor the host while the intended group explores and generates chunks, and increase resources only when observed memory pressure, garbage-collection pauses, or sustained CPU saturation justify it. Leave memory for the operating system and other services; assigning all physical RAM to Java can make the computer less stable.
Troubleshooting the most common failures
The server closes immediately
- Run the supplied script from a terminal so the error remains visible.
- Confirm that the installed Java runtime is 64-bit and suitable for the selected pack.
- Check that you extracted the entire archive and did not move the script away from its libraries or configuration files.
- Read the first error in the log rather than focusing on the final “server stopped” line.
- Undo the most recent configuration or mod change, using your backup if necessary.
“Incompatible mod” or handshake errors
- Compare the client’s Minecraft version, loader, and Prominence release with the server’s selected branch.
- Make sure a Forge client is not attempting to join the NeoForge branch.
- Do not copy individual client mods into the server. Re-extract the matching server pack if files were removed or mixed.
- Have every player update or roll back to one agreed build before testing again.
The world loads but performance is poor
- Check CPU, memory, disk, and network use on the host while players are active.
- Ensure the computer is not simultaneously running heavy applications, backups, or downloads.
- Reduce avoidable background load and allow the initial world-generation work to finish.
- Use the pack’s documented JVM settings; do not paste arguments intended for another edition.
- Back up before changing configuration or replacing the pack.
Only local players can join
- Verify that the server is listening on the intended port and that the router forwards it to the current local IP.
- Check the operating-system firewall and any security software.
- Confirm that your ISP provides a reachable public address. Carrier-grade NAT can make ordinary forwarding ineffective.
- Use a VPN path when forwarding is unavailable, and have all participants join the same virtual network.
Quick launch checklist
- Everyone has agreed on Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0.
- The Minecraft version is 1.20.1 for the selected Classic branch.
- The server pack matches the loader and release; the Forge archive is
Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip. - A suitable 64-bit Java runtime is installed and verified.
- The archive is extracted intact into a dedicated folder.
- The included launch instructions, EULA step, and first-start output have been followed.
- Server name, difficulty, operator accounts, whitelist, and relevant properties are configured.
- The world has a dated backup before public play or upgrades.
- Port 25565 is forwarded to the host, or everyone has joined the chosen VPN.
- The host computer stays awake, powered, connected, and monitored while players are online.
- Every player uses Minecraft Java Edition and the exact same loader and Prominence build.
Bottom line
Hosting Prominence II Classic is straightforward when you treat the loader and release as non-negotiable. Pick Forge v2.2.0 with its listed server pack or NeoForge v2.8.0 with a matching NeoForge pack, keep the complete server files together, follow the archive’s own Java and launch instructions, and back up before changes. Home hosting avoids a subscription but makes you responsible for uptime, networking, security, updates, and recovery; managed hosting reduces those chores only if the provider confirms support for your exact Classic build.
