To host a Project Zomboid Build 42 server, install the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, verify the current Build 42 branch before updating, forward the game’s UDP ports, edit servertest.ini, and launch the supplied server script as a normal operating-system user. The key networking values are UDP port 16261 (the default/handshake port) and UDP port 16262 (the game’s UDPPort). Forwarding TCP instead of UDP is a common reason friends cannot connect.

What you need before hosting
A dedicated Project Zomboid server is separate from the normal game client. SteamCMD is a command-line Steam tool that downloads and updates the server files; installing the game in your desktop Steam library does not create a dedicated server automatically.

- Router access: You must be able to create an inbound port-forwarding rule. If your internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, a router rule may not be reachable from the public internet.
- Firewall access: The operating-system firewall must allow the same inbound traffic you forward at the router.
- A non-root account on Linux: Start the server as an ordinary user, not as
root. - Build-branch confirmation: Branch names have changed as Build 42 moved through testing. Check the current SteamDB listing or the official PZwiki before adding any beta flag.
A PZwiki search snippet reported Build 42 as stable on 29 July 2026, but that date was not confirmed by opening the page. Treat the branch as a value to verify at setup time rather than assuming an old command still selects the right build.
Self-hosting or a paid host?
Self-hosting costs no separate server rental, but you supply the hardware, bandwidth, router access, firewall configuration, uptime, backups, and administration. A managed host normally supplies a public endpoint and a control panel, at the cost of a recurring fee and less control over the underlying machine.

Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
1. Create a dedicated installation directory
Choose a directory used only for the Project Zomboid server. A separate directory keeps downloaded files, configuration, saves, and logs away from the game client and makes updates easier to identify. On Linux, give ownership of that directory to the account that will run the server; do not plan to launch it as root.
2. Install or unpack SteamCMD
SteamCMD is a separate download from the regular Steam client. Start SteamCMD from its own directory, then use a forced install directory for the server. A command repeated by several third-party guides is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /path/to/pz-server +login anonymous +app_update 380870 validate +quitThe command uses anonymous login and app ID 380870. The app ID is widely reported in setup guides, but it was not confirmed on an official page in the available documentation. If Valve or the Project Zomboid documentation changes the app ID, use the current official value instead of blindly reusing an old script.
Replace /path/to/pz-server with the directory you created. On Windows, quote a path containing spaces and use the SteamCMD executable appropriate to your installation. The validate option checks downloaded files; it can take longer than a normal update.
3. Do not guess the Build 42 beta flag
Sources disagree about how Build 42 should be selected. One commonly copied example adds -beta unstable, while another says Build 42 became the default public build from version 42.20. Those statements cannot both be treated as a timeless command. First inspect the current branch names in SteamDB or the official wiki. Add a beta argument only when the current branch documentation explicitly requires it; otherwise run the normal app_update 380870 validate command.

After SteamCMD finishes, confirm that the expected server scripts are present before configuring anything. Keep a note of the branch you selected so every administrator updates the same build.

Configure servertest.ini
Find the correct configuration file
The main server configuration is named servertest.ini. Its location depends on the operating system:

The capitalization shown for Linux is Server; use the directory created by the server on your system. Stop the server before editing. A setup guide reports that the server rewrites the file during shutdown, so changes made while it is running can be lost. The safe sequence is stop, edit, save, then start again.
Set the server identity and access values
Open servertest.ini in a plain-text editor and set the values your group needs. The commonly adjusted entries are:
Name=YourServerName
Password=ChooseAUniquePassword
MaxPlayers=YourChosenLimitUse a name that lets friends identify the server and a password that is not reused elsewhere. Set MaxPlayers deliberately according to the machine and connection you can support. The available documentation does not establish a universal default or a guaranteed hard cap, so do not rely on claims that a particular number is always the default or maximum.

Understand the UPnP option
The wiki documents UPnP=true as an attempt to configure the gateway automatically. If that attempt fails, the server falls back to its default ports. UPnP can be convenient on a home network, but it is not a substitute for checking the router and firewall rules yourself; leave explicit forwarding in place when you need predictable external access.
Project Zomboid server port forwarding
Forward the two documented UDP ports
The PZwiki server-settings documentation lists these values:

Create inbound forwarding rules on the router for UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 to the host machine’s local IP address. Then create matching inbound rules in the host firewall. Select UDP explicitly: a TCP rule can look correct in a router interface while doing nothing for the game traffic.
The wiki’s additional TCP-port note
The PZwiki FAQ says that each player slot needs an additional TCP port to stream the world to clients. Guides disagree about how often this matters in practice, and the available material does not establish a single universal TCP range or a tested rule for every setup. Treat the statement as a wiki requirement to investigate if clients fail during world streaming, not as a reason to replace the two documented UDP forwards. Start with UDP 16261 and 16262, then consult the current FAQ for the exact TCP-port behavior of the Build 42 version you are running.

Router setup sequence
- Give the server computer a stable local address, either with a DHCP reservation or an equivalent router setting.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page and create a rule for external UDP 16261 to the host’s local UDP 16261.
- Create a second rule for external UDP 16262 to the host’s local UDP 16262.
- Save or apply the router changes.
- Allow the same UDP ports through the operating-system firewall on the server computer.
- Have a friend test from outside your home network. Testing only from the host’s LAN can hide a failed public forward.
If the router reports that “Server port 16262 is closed,” a Steam community discussion says this warning can be harmless because the server may fall back to Steam’s relay. Relay fallback can let players connect without a direct port, but forwarding the documented UDP ports still gives direct connectivity when your network permits it.

Start the Build 42 server
Windows
In the dedicated-server directory, run StartServer64.bat. Use the 64-bit script on a 64-bit Windows installation. Keep the console window available while testing so you can see startup errors, authentication messages, and shutdown behavior.
Linux
From the server directory, run start-server.sh as the ordinary account that owns the files. Do not launch it as root. If the script is not executable, correct the file permission as that account or invoke it through the shell according to your distribution’s normal script policy; do not change ownership to root merely to make it run.

First connection test
- Start the server and wait for it to finish initialization.
- From the same network, test with the host’s local address if you are checking the installation itself.
- Ask a player on another internet connection to use the public address and server port shown by your current configuration.
- If the outside test fails, stop changing gameplay settings and return to the router protocol, host firewall, and branch checks.
Keep the server process running while players are connected. Stop it cleanly before editing servertest.ini or performing an update.
Build 42 memory and performance planning
Build 42 needs more memory than Build 41 according to administrator reports. One guide claims that about 10 GB is a practical floor and that an 8 GB machine can be terminated by an out-of-memory condition while generating a new world. That is a single-guide report, not an independently established specification, so use it as a warning rather than a guaranteed minimum.
Watch the host while the world is first generated and while several players enter different areas. If the operating system kills the process, reduce other workloads, increase available memory, or move the server to a machine with more headroom before adding players. Do not treat an unverified player-count default or a claimed hard cap as a performance guarantee; the available documentation does not establish those numbers.
Troubleshooting checklist
Friends cannot connect from outside
- Confirm the router rules are UDP, not TCP, for 16261 and 16262.
- Confirm both rules point to the current local IP of the server computer.
- Confirm the host firewall allows the same UDP traffic.
- Check whether the internet connection has a publicly reachable address; a port forward cannot bypass carrier-grade NAT.
- Test from a genuinely external network, not only from another device on the same LAN.
The server appears to run the wrong build
Recheck the branch shown by SteamDB or the official wiki. Remove a copied -beta unstable argument unless current documentation calls for it, then run SteamCMD’s update command again. Branch names and defaults are volatile during Build 42 development.

Stop the server, edit the correct servertest.ini under your user profile, save the file, and start the server again. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten during shutdown.
A port warning appears but players can join
The reported “16262 is closed” warning may reflect relay fallback rather than a complete outage. Keep the UDP forwards if you want direct connections, and investigate only if players actually fail to join or experience streaming problems.
The process exits during world creation
Check available memory and the operating-system logs. Build 42 has been reported to use more RAM than Build 41, and some administrators report out-of-memory termination on 8 GB systems during initial world generation. Because that threshold is not an official specification, measure your own host before deciding on a fixed player limit.
Maintenance practices that prevent avoidable outages
- Record the SteamCMD command and the branch decision used for the installation.
- Back up
servertest.iniand the world data while the server is stopped. - Apply updates during a maintenance window and check the branch again before restarting.
- Keep the host account and file permissions consistent so updates do not create root-owned files that the normal server user cannot modify.
- After a router, firewall, or branch change, perform one local and one external connection test.
Bottom line for a Build 42 dedicated server
The reliable setup path is SteamCMD installation, current branch verification, explicit UDP forwarding for 16261 and 16262, a stopped-server edit of servertest.ini, and launch through StartServer64.bat or start-server.sh as a normal user. Build 42’s branch names, memory behavior, and some port details are still areas where guides conflict, so verify those values against the current SteamDB and official PZwiki documentation whenever you update.
