To host Play as Dragon: Comfort Edition, first pin one exact pack release, then install the server loader that belongs to that release. The stable listing is Play as Dragon Comfort Edition-4.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge (uploaded September 7, 2026). A newer 5.0 beta for Minecraft 26.1.2 on NeoForge and a legacy 13.06.2024 release for Minecraft 1.19.2 on Forge are also listed. Every client must use the same Minecraft version, loader and pack file as the server.

CurseForge describes the pack as: “Play as dragon, as bee, brain-stealer, desert claw, griffin and more! No hardcore for dragon fans.” It is listed in the Adventure and RPG and Exploration categories. The current files page showed 56,074 total downloads when crawled in September 2026. The abandoned original Play as Dragon project showed 1.4 million downloads in CurseForge’s 2023 archive metadata; that older project is not a substitute for the current Comfort Edition files.
For a multiplayer server, the pack is not a single mod that can be dropped into any world. It is a versioned collection of mods, configuration files and sometimes scripts. The server, each client and the loader must agree on the same release. A mismatch can prevent a connection, produce registry errors or create a world with different gameplay data.

Choose one release before installing anything
Open the project’s files page and record the complete file name, Minecraft version and loader. Do this before renting a server or creating a world. The listings currently identify three relevant lines:

Do not combine a 1.21.1 NeoForge client with 1.19.2 Forge server files, or use a 5.0 beta client against a 4.0 server. The numbers are not interchangeable, even if the launcher appears to show the same project name.
What you need before creating the server
A pinned pack and loader
Save the exact pack name in a note shared with your players. Also write down whether the release uses Forge or NeoForge. When a pack updates, treat the update as a planned migration: stop the server, back up the world and configuration, test the new files separately, and only then change the live installation.
A machine or host that can run the selected release
You need an operating system supported by the selected Forge or NeoForge server, enough free storage for the server files and world, and a stable connection if people outside your home network will join. The reviewed project and hosting documentation do not state an authoritative numeric RAM minimum or a required Java-runtime version. Check the selected release’s own server instructions and the loader’s requirements rather than relying on a generic number.
Identical client installations
Each player should install the same project file through CurseForge or another launcher that supports the pack. A player using a different loader, Minecraft version or pack revision is not running the same client, even if the visible mod list looks similar.
Self-hosting: complete setup
1. Install the pack and record its identity
- Install Play as Dragon: Comfort Edition from its official CurseForge project page.
- Open the installed profile’s details and write down the complete file name, Minecraft version and loader.
- Use that information as the server specification. Do not start by installing “the latest Forge” or “the latest NeoForge” independently; the loader must match the selected Minecraft line.
2. Install the matching Forge or NeoForge server
Download the server installer for the exact Minecraft version and loader recorded in step 1. Install it in a new, dedicated directory rather than in your ordinary client profile. The directory should contain only the server installation, pack files and the world data you intend to host.

For the 1.21.1 stable line, that means a 1.21.1 NeoForge server. For the 26.1.2 beta, use the 26.1.2 NeoForge server. For the legacy line, use a 1.19.2 Forge server. A loader from another Minecraft line can start far enough to create files and still fail when mods load, so verify the version printed by the server console.
3. Run the server once to generate its files
- Launch the server using the startup method created by the Forge or NeoForge installer.
- Let it create the initial configuration, libraries and world-directory structure.
- When the server stops because Minecraft requires an EULA decision, open the generated
eula.txt, read the license and set the acceptance value only if you agree. - Open
server.propertiesand set the options you need, such as the server name, difficulty, game mode, view distance, whitelist and port. - Stop the server cleanly before copying or editing pack files. Editing while it is running can leave partially written configuration or world data.
4. Add the pack’s server files
Prefer a server pack or other server-ready download when the project provides one. CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation describes its deployment flow for modpacks with a matching server pack, so do not assume that a normal client download is automatically a complete server package.
Copy the server pack into the server directory while preserving its configuration and startup scripts. Some modpack formats use server overrides to separate server files from client files. Modrinth’s format documentation describes this separation. If the project documentation marks a mod as client-only, do not place that client-only component in the server’s mod directory. Conversely, do not remove a dependency merely because it has no visible user interface; the server may still need it for registries or world generation.
5. Start again and read the entire first log
- Start the server with the same launcher script you used in step 3.
- Watch for missing dependencies, wrong-loader messages, duplicate mods, invalid configuration and registry errors.
- Wait until the console reports that the server is ready before attempting a connection.
- If it fails, stop it, save the log, correct one class of problem at a time and restart. Randomly replacing several mods makes the original error harder to identify.
A successful process start is not proof that the pack is correctly installed. The meaningful test is a clean mod-loading phase followed by a ready server and a client that can join without registry or missing-mod errors.

Create a backup before inviting anyone. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory so a failed update or corrupted world cannot overwrite both copies. Enable a whitelist if the server is intended for friends, choose administrator accounts carefully and avoid granting operator privileges casually.
Back up the world, server configuration and pack-specific configuration together. A world saved under one pack revision may depend on block, item or entity registries from that revision. Restoring only the world folder after changing the mod set can produce missing-data warnings or permanent losses.

7. Give friends the connection details
Share the address and port only after you have tested a complete client connection. Players must install the same pack release, Minecraft version and loader. If the server is at home, they may also need the address that is reachable from outside your network and a firewall rule allowing the server port; the exact networking steps depend on your router and operating system.
Never post an unrestricted home IP address publicly. Use a whitelist, keep the server software updated within the selected release line and monitor the console when unfamiliar players connect.

Check the project’s files and description for a download explicitly labeled server pack, server files or server-ready files. If one exists, use it instead of guessing which client files belong on the server. If no server package is listed, the project’s documentation is the authority on whether the client archive can be adapted.
Server overrides are useful because they can replace or omit files that are valid only on a client. Copying an entire client instance into a server directory can introduce graphical, audio or interface components that are unsupported server-side. Removing files without checking the pack’s instructions can be just as harmful when a dependency is required for world generation or networking.
Using a managed Minecraft host
A managed host is appropriate when you do not want to configure port forwarding, maintain a machine at home or perform every restart manually. Confirm the host supports the exact Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge loader and pack release before paying. “Modpack support” by itself does not guarantee support for a beta line or for a particular loader.
CurseForge’s hosted flow
CurseForge documents a hosted deployment flow for compatible modpacks with a matching server pack. The documented flow is designed to avoid manual port forwarding. Confirm that the specific Play as Dragon release you selected is available to the host and that the server package is compatible before deployment.

Shockbyte panel

Those controls reduce routine administration, but you still need to pin the pack release and verify the loader yourself. Check that the host offers the exact Minecraft line you intend to run, particularly for a beta release.

Common failures and how to fix them
“Incompatible mod set” or missing-mod error
Compare the server’s pack file, Minecraft version and loader with the player’s profile. Reinstall the exact project file on the client rather than copying a different mod list by hand. Check for a server-only or client-only instruction in the pack documentation.
Registry or datapack errors during startup
These usually indicate mismatched versions, missing dependencies or an incomplete server pack. Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup and install the matching loader and pack as a set. Do not delete configuration or world files until you have a backup.
The server starts but nobody outside the house can join
Test locally first. If local connections work, review the firewall rule, router port forwarding and the address shared with friends. A host-managed server avoids most home-router configuration, but you still need to use the endpoint supplied by the host.
Players can join but see missing textures or a broken interface
Check that the client profile is the official pack installation and that its resource files finished downloading. Do not “fix” a client visual problem by adding random client mods to the server; keep client-only components on the client unless the pack documentation says otherwise.

An update breaks the world
Stop immediately and restore the pre-update backup. Test the new pack in a separate directory and world copy, then migrate only after the server reaches the ready state and a test client can connect. Keep the old pack files available for rollback.

- Make an offline backup of the world, configurations and scripts.
- Install the candidate release in a separate test directory or host instance.
- Start it, inspect the complete log and connect with a client using the same candidate profile.
- Check important areas of the world, inventories and pack-specific mechanics.
- Schedule downtime, replace the live files and retain the prior release for rollback.
- Tell every player exactly which profile to install before they reconnect.
