You can run a nonstop YouTube playlist stream from AWS Lightsail by running an encoder on a Lightsail virtual server and sending its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The server takes the place of a home computer, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the instance, encoder, network connection, media and YouTube ingestion all need to keep working.
What this setup does—and what it does not
Lightsail hosts the machine that plays or encodes your playlist. YouTube Live remains the destination where viewers watch. You configure an encoder on the instance with your media and YouTube stream details, then supervise that process so it can be restarted if it stops.

This is a single-server VPS setup, not a highly available broadcast architecture. AWS’s higher-availability live-video architecture uses additional managed Media Services and CloudFront components; it is a different design and cost scope from sending a stream directly from one Lightsail instance to YouTube.

Check YouTube channel and content readiness
Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. Its current help page also says the minimum age for live streaming is 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before building the server workflow: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Clear the rights for every playlist item
You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed for all video and audio in the broadcast, including music. YouTube may replace the live picture, interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects third-party content. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to an allowlist. Review YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams and the relevant license terms before going live.
Choose a Lightsail plan for the actual workload
Lightsail bundles vCPU, memory, SSD storage and a monthly data-transfer allowance. On the AWS pricing page accessed October 3, 2026, the listed Linux/Unix public IPv4 starting plan is $5 per month and includes 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. Pricing and plan allowances can change; confirm the current terms on AWS Lightsail pricing before creating an instance.

That entry plan is not a universal recommendation for playlist streaming. The required resources depend on whether the encoder copies already compatible media or re-encodes it, the output resolution and frame rate, and other process overhead. The cited official sources do not specify a tested minimum Lightsail size for this workload. Start with a plan suited to your encoder, test representative content, then monitor CPU, memory, network use and transfer consumption before relying on it unattended.
Create the instance and prepare the encoder
Create a Lightsail instance with an operating system supported by the encoder you intend to use. Install and configure that encoder using its own official instructions; the exact commands and interface vary by operating system and encoder, so do not assume one command or configuration file applies to every setup. Place the playlist media where the encoder can read it, and verify that it can play through the end and return to the beginning as intended.
Decide whether to pass through compatible encoded media or re-encode it. Copying compatible media can use a different CPU profile from live re-encoding. Test the chosen mode with the actual files and output settings; do not infer that a particular Lightsail tier will handle every format or quality.

Configure YouTube Live and encoder settings
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot or log. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for normal encoder ingestion. HLS is a separate option with additional setup requirements and higher latency; use it only when your encoder or codec workflow calls for it.
- Set a YouTube-compatible video output. YouTube’s encoder guide lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose bitrate from the official table for your codec and output. For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as recommended for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These figures are not a universal setting for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the combination you plan to use.
- Test before making the stream unattended. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. Confirm that audio is present, the picture is stable, the playlist loops as expected and the stream appears healthy in the Live Control Room.
Keep the process running and plan for recovery
A VPS moves the encoder off your home computer, but the encoder process can still exit, the instance or its network can fail, or YouTube can drop the ingest connection. Design a supervision strategy that detects a stopped process and restarts it, and arrange alerts so you learn about failures. These are operational recommendations, not built-in guarantees of a Lightsail instance or a particular encoder.

Test the recovery behavior before depending on it: observe what happens when the encoder exits or loses its connection, confirm that it can reconnect using the configured stream details, and check YouTube’s stream-health status after recovery. Avoid exposing the stream key in the logs or alert messages used to diagnose failures.

YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a nonstop broadcast, do not rely on YouTube as the only copy if retaining the stream matters. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; check that the archive is intact and that the local recording file continues to grow. A local recording is a separate storage requirement from sending the stream. An external SSD is one optional place to keep a backup file; it is not required for Lightsail to send the broadcast. YouTube’s DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams, so do not promise viewers that they can rewind the whole broadcast.
Understand monetization and reused-content limits
A continuous playlist is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy flags repetitive or mass-produced content, and its reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. Having permission to use material does not by itself establish monetization eligibility; likewise, having no copyright claim does not prove that a channel meets monetization requirements. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and assess the channel and content against the current policy.
