To host the actual New Life SMP, install its Fabric modpack rather than a Bukkit or Paper plugin. The newest listed release is New Life SMP v8 for Minecraft 1.19.2 on Fabric, dated July 13, 2023. It gives every player six lives, uses Origins for randomly assigned classes, and removes a life whenever that player dies. A practical server should have at least 6 GB of allocated RAM; groups may need 7 GB or more.

This guide shows how to choose a host, install the pack, create or upload a world, enable optional hardcore rules safely, and run a Paper-based alternative when you want a lighter, mostly vanilla SMP instead of the New Life mechanics.

Understand what you are hosting
New Life SMP is a Minecraft modpack, not a server plugin. The pack combines the Origins mod with a six-life rule: each death consumes one life, and an Origin (a class with its own abilities and restrictions) is assigned randomly. Both the server and every connecting player must use the same pack and Minecraft version.
The primary CurseForge listing attributes the pack to DAQEM and identifies v8 as the newest file found. That file targets Minecraft 1.19.2 on Fabric and was listed on July 13, 2023. The listing also says only its author can update the pack to a newer Minecraft version. There is no official New Life SMP build for Minecraft 1.21 in the material available here.

Do not confuse this pack with the separate Modrinth project named The New Life Modpack. That fan-made pack is intended for a different server, advertises 1.21.x compatibility, and focuses on performance and voice chat; the reviewed information does not describe the six-lives or Origins system for it.
Check requirements before you pay for or configure a server
Server resources
- Memory: BisectHosting recommends 6 GB of RAM for New Life SMP. A CurseForge listing summary suggests 7 GB or more for groups. Treat 6 GB as a sensible starting point and increase allocation if several players explore simultaneously or the server becomes sluggish.
- Storage: Leave room for the world, player data, backups, logs and future mod files. The exact disk figure is not stated, so avoid buying a plan with no backup headroom.
- CPU and connection: A modded server benefits from a modern CPU and a stable, low-latency connection. Self-hosting also requires a reachable inbound Minecraft port and a computer that can remain online.
Client compatibility
Install the same New Life SMP release, Fabric loader and Minecraft 1.19.2 profile on every player’s launcher. A client on 1.20 or 1.21, or a client using a different mod revision, should be expected to fail the connection check or behave unpredictably.
Choose a hosting approach

Choose the first option if your priority is getting the genuine New Life rules online quickly. Choose self-hosting when you need control over files and networking. Choose Paper only when you deliberately want a plugin-based community SMP rather than the modpack’s class and life system.

Option A: install New Life SMP with a modpack-capable host
1. Create the server with the correct profile
- Open the provider’s Minecraft server control panel and start a new instance.
- Use the modpack or one-click installer, search for New Life SMP, and select the Fabric/Minecraft 1.19.2 release. Check the release number before installing; do not substitute a similarly named 1.21 pack.
- Allocate at least 6 GB of RAM. If your group is large, begin at 7 GB or more, as suggested by the CurseForge listing summary.
- Start the installation and wait for the panel to report completion before changing files.
BisectHosting’s listing says its installer handles the New Life SMP installation automatically. Other panels use different labels, so verify that the resulting server contains the New Life files and Fabric rather than a Paper jar.
2. Start once, then stop before editing
- Start the server and allow it to generate its configuration and default world.
- Watch the console for a completed startup message, then stop the server from the control panel.
- Never edit
server.propertieswhile the server is running. A shutdown can overwrite changes made during runtime.
3. Upload an existing world, if you have one
- Stop the server.
- Use the host’s file manager or SFTP to upload the complete world folder, including its region, data, player and level files.
- Set the
level-namevalue inserver.propertiesto the uploaded folder’s exact name, or rename the folder to match the existing value. - Move the generated world out of the way rather than deleting it immediately; it can serve as a fallback until the uploaded world loads correctly.
- Start the server and check the console for a clean world load. Join as an operator and inspect spawn, inventories and dimensions before inviting everyone.
A world created with a different mod list or Minecraft version may contain incompatible blocks or entities. Keep a copy of the original world before conversion.
4. Restrict access before inviting players
- With the server stopped, set
white-list=trueandenforce-whitelist=trueinserver.properties. - Start the server and run
/whitelist add PlayerNamefor each permitted account. You can issue the command from the console without joining. - Test with one invited player before publishing the address. Keep operator privileges limited to people who need them.
Option B: self-host the Fabric server
Self-hosting gives you full file access but makes you the administrator, network operator and backup provider. Download the New Life SMP release and the matching Fabric server files from their official listings, then keep every file on the 1.19.2 profile.

- Install a Java runtime compatible with Minecraft 1.19.2 on the machine that will stay online.
- Place the Fabric server launcher and the New Life SMP files in a dedicated server directory. Do not mix this directory with a different modpack.
- Run the Fabric launch command supplied with the server package once. Accept the generated EULA file according to its terms, then launch again to generate the world and configuration.
- Stop the process cleanly and edit
server.properties. Set the server name, world name, whitelist settings and any other values before the first public session. - Allow the Minecraft server port through the host machine’s firewall and, if the machine is behind a router, forward that port to its local address. Give friends the public address only after a second account has tested the connection.
- Schedule backups of the world directory and configuration. Keep at least one backup offline or on another machine so a disk failure or operator mistake cannot remove every copy.
Use the same RAM guidance as a hosted installation. If the operating system and server share a machine, reserve memory for the operating system instead of assigning all physical RAM to Java.
Enable hardcore rules safely
Hardcore is a built-in server setting; it does not require a plugin. It is separate from New Life’s six-life mechanic, so decide whether you want both. Running both makes deaths especially consequential: the pack removes a life, while hardcore applies its own world-level death rule.
Configure a new hardcore world
- Stop the server completely.
- Open
server.propertiesin the host file manager or your self-hosted server directory. - Set
hardcore=true. - For a private group, also set
white-list=trueandenforce-whitelist=true. Setspawn-protection=0if players must build immediately around spawn. - Use a new value for
level-name, or move the old world folder aside before restarting. The hardcore flag is written into the world when it is created; changing the property does not reliably convert an already generated world. - Start the server and confirm the new world is marked hardcore before anyone invests time in it.
Guides disagree about whether hardcore ignores the difficulty line or simply defaults to Hard. Setting difficulty=hard keeps the file explicit, but treat hardcore=true as the controlling setting and verify behavior on your exact Minecraft build.

Convert an existing world only after a backup
If preserving an existing map matters, stop the server and make a separate, restorable copy first. One documented method is to edit the world’s level.dat with an NBT editor such as NBTExplorer. This is an advanced conversion, not a substitute for a backup: an incorrect NBT change can make the world fail to load or alter unrelated settings.
What players should install
- The same Minecraft 1.19.2 profile used by the server.
- The Fabric loader version required by the New Life SMP release.
- The complete New Life SMP client pack, including its required dependencies.
- No extra mods that alter world generation, player abilities or registries unless every client and the server are updated together.
Have one player connect before announcing the server. A “missing mods,” registry mismatch or incompatible version message normally means the client and server are not using identical pack files.
Option C: build a Paper SMP instead
Paper is appropriate when you want a vanilla-like SMP with administrative plugins. It is not a way to install New Life SMP: Paper cannot provide the pack’s Origins classes or its six-life progression by itself.
Recommended baseline
- CoreProtect: records block changes so an administrator can inspect or roll back grief.
- EssentialsX: supplies common administrative and player commands.
- GriefPrevention: lets players claim areas and reduces accidental or deliberate damage.
- WorldEdit: speeds up controlled building and maintenance for trusted staff.
Paper setup sequence
- Install the Paper server build appropriate to the Minecraft version you intend to run.
- Launch it once, accept the EULA as required, then stop it.
- Place compatible plugin jar files in the
pluginsdirectory and restart. - Turn on the whitelist and add players before opening the address.
- Configure claims, permissions, backups and rollback access before the first public session.
Use a clear name such as “Hardcore SMP” for this variant so players do not assume it contains New Life’s random Origins or six lives.

- Whitelist first: test accounts, then invite people deliberately.
- Back up before changes: copy the world before installing mods, converting hardcore, changing generation settings or importing a map.
- Keep versions fixed: record the exact New Life release, Fabric loader and Minecraft version in your group chat or server notes.
- Watch memory and tick time: unexplained lag after adding players or exploring new terrain is a reason to inspect logs and increase RAM, not to repeatedly restart without diagnosing it.
- Protect the spawn: use
spawn-protection=0only when your whitelist, claims or staff controls make unrestricted building acceptable. - Plan life-loss rules: explain whether a player who reaches zero lives is removed, spectates or receives an administrator decision. The pack’s listing establishes the six-life mechanic, but your community policy determines what happens afterward.
- Document recovery: note where backups live, who can restore them and how to revert a failed update.
Troubleshooting common failures

Which setup should you choose?
- Choose hosted Fabric New Life SMP if you want the six lives and Origins system with the least server maintenance.
- Choose self-hosted Fabric if you already have a reliable always-on machine and are comfortable managing Java, networking, backups and updates.
- Choose Paper if your goal is a plugin-managed SMP with claims, rollback and administrative commands, and you do not need the modpack’s class system.
For most friend groups asking specifically for “New Life SMP,” the hosted Fabric route is the safest starting point: select the 1.19.2 release, allocate at least 6 GB, install the identical client pack, whitelist players and create the world only after the configuration is saved.
