Before downloading anything, identify the exact Minecraft version your mod or modpack supports. A server running Minecraft 1.21.1 is not automatically compatible with a pack built for 1.20.1, and a mod compiled for a different loader build can fail even when the game versions look similar.
Match all three version layers

The NeoForged documentation set for Minecraft 1.21–1.21.1 specifies a Java 21 Development Kit and a 64-bit JVM. Other Minecraft release lines can change the requirement, so do not treat Java 21 as a universal rule for every future or older version.

Requirements checklist
- A computer or virtual machine that can remain online while players connect.
- The target Minecraft version and a compatible NeoForge installer.
- A 64-bit Java Development Kit (JDK) matching that release’s requirement; Java 21 is the documented prerequisite for the 1.21–1.21.1 guide.
- The mod files, or preferably the modpack’s official server pack.
- Permission to create firewall rules and, for players outside your home network, to change router port-forwarding settings.
- A backup location for the world before any loader or mod update.
Install and verify Java before installing NeoForge
NeoForge launches through the java command. If your shell finds an older Java installation first, the installer can report an unsupported version or fail to load its argument file even when a newer JDK is installed.
Check the active runtime
- Open a new terminal or Command Prompt.
- Run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported major version matches the NeoForge/Minecraft release and that the operating system is using a 64-bit Java installation.
On the 1.21–1.21.1 documentation path, the expected result is Java 21. The command must work from the account and terminal that will run the server; checking Java in one shell does not prove that a service, scheduled task, or graphical launcher will use the same runtime.

If java -version reports an older release, correct the runtime selection before proceeding:
- Windows: update the system or user
PATHso the desired JDK’sbindirectory appears before older Java entries. SetJAVA_HOMEto the JDK directory, open a new Command Prompt, and runjava -versionagain. - macOS: remove stale Java paths from your shell profile or select the intended JDK with the system’s Java installation tools, then start a new Terminal window and recheck.
- Linux: set
JAVA_HOMEand select the intended Java binary with the distribution’s alternatives mechanism, then verify withjava -version.
Do not continue until the version check is correct. Reinstalling NeoForge while the wrong Java remains first on PATH usually reproduces the same error.
Download NeoForge and create the server
Download the NeoForge installer that corresponds to the Minecraft version selected in your compatibility check. Keep the installer in a location you can identify, and create a dedicated, otherwise-empty server directory. Avoid installing into a general Downloads folder where unrelated files make backups and troubleshooting harder.
Run the dedicated-server installer
- Create and enter the server directory. For example, on Linux or macOS, use
mkdir minecraft-neoforgefollowed bycd minecraft-neoforge. On Windows, create a folder in File Explorer and open Command Prompt in that folder. - Run the installer with the server flag:
java -jar /path/to/neoforge-installer.jar --installServerReplace the path with the actual installer filename. On Windows, quote paths containing spaces, for example
java -jar "C:Minecraftneoforge-installer.jar" --installServer. - Wait for the installer to finish. It creates the NeoForge server files, launch scripts, and a
user_jvm_args.txtfile in the server directory.
If the command says that Java is unsupported, return to the Java verification step. If it cannot find the installer, correct the path or change into the directory containing the file; do not rename the command’s --installServer option.

Set memory deliberately in user_jvm_args.txt
NeoForge’s installer provides user_jvm_args.txt for JVM options. Memory needs depend on the modpack, world size, simulation activity, and other programs sharing the machine. There is no universal RAM number that guarantees a particular player count or pack will perform well.
Choose a safe allocation
- Leave enough RAM for the operating system and any other services on the host.
- Increase the Java heap only when the pack’s documentation or observed logs show that the current allocation is insufficient.
- Do not assign nearly all physical memory to Java; the operating system, file cache, and native processes still need headroom.
- Change one setting at a time and record the previous value so you can revert if startup becomes slower or the host begins swapping.
Put the JVM options in user_jvm_args.txt rather than editing generated launch scripts. The exact option syntax is pack- and launcher-dependent; use the arguments already present in that file as the starting point.
Start the server and accept the EULA
After installation, launch the generated script from the server directory:
- Linux or macOS: run
./run.sh. If the shell reports a permission error, grant execute permission withchmod +x run.sh, then run it again. - Windows: run
run.batfrom Command Prompt or double-click it while keeping the window open so you can read errors.
The first launch normally stops before the world is created. Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to it, save the file, and start the same script again.
A successful second launch creates the world and keeps a server console running. Stop it through the console’s normal shutdown command before closing the terminal; abruptly killing the process risks world corruption.
Make the server reachable on your network
NeoForged documents Minecraft’s default server port as 25565. A local connection and an internet connection involve different checks.

Connecting from the same computer
Use the local address shown by your client, commonly localhost when the client and server run on one machine. This test isolates game and mod compatibility from router configuration.
Connecting from another device at home
Use the host computer’s private LAN address, such as an address in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x range. Allow Java or the server process through the host operating system’s firewall for TCP port 25565, and ensure the network is configured as trusted where required.

- Create an inbound firewall rule on the host for the server’s port.
- Forward TCP port 25565 on the router to the host computer’s private LAN address.
- Give the host a reserved local address so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
- Have a remote player connect using the public address and port. Do not publish that address unnecessarily.
If local players can connect but remote players cannot, the server and mods are probably running; investigate the host firewall, router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT, or an incorrect public address. Opening a port on the host alone does not configure the router.
Add mods safely
Start once with a clean installation before adding content. NeoForged recommends obtaining mods from trustworthy sources such as CurseForge and Modrinth. Download files that explicitly support your Minecraft and NeoForge versions.
Installing individual mods
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Open the server directory’s
modsfolder. If it does not exist, create a folder named exactlymods. - Copy the compatible mod
.jarfiles into that folder. Do not unzip them. - Start the server and read the console for dependency or version errors.
- Install the same required client-side content for every player. A client and server must agree on the pack’s required versions.
Keep a written list of added files. When a startup failure appears, remove the most recently added mod first, confirm the server starts, and then check that mod’s dependency and version requirements.
Installing a modpack
Use the pack’s supplied server pack whenever one is available. It is assembled with server configuration, dependencies, and a file layout intended for dedicated hosting.

- Stop the server and make a complete copy of the world and configuration directories.
- Extract the server pack into the NeoForge server directory, preserving its folders and files.
- Remove client-only mods when the pack’s instructions identify them. Rendering, menu, or purely graphical additions commonly do not belong on a dedicated server, but the pack author should be the authority.
- Run the generated NeoForge script and inspect the log for missing dependencies, duplicate files, or a required Java version.
- Distribute the matching client pack to players; mixing versions can produce disconnects or missing-content errors.
If no server pack exists, consult the pack’s installation notes rather than copying a client profile blindly. A client export can contain files that cannot run on a dedicated server.

Run a repeatable launch routine
For routine operation, keep the server directory unchanged and launch it from the generated script so the installer-managed arguments and user_jvm_args.txt are honored. A practical routine is:
- Open a terminal in the server directory.
- Confirm the expected Java version with
java -versionafter Java or operating-system updates. - Start
./run.shorrun.bat. - Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before connecting players.
- Use the server console’s normal stop command before maintenance, backups, or shutdown.
Keep console logs from failed launches. The first error in the log is generally more useful than the final cascade of “failed to load” messages.

NeoForged’s server guide gives a direct warning: “Always backup your world before updating NeoForge or mods!” Treat the world, configuration files, and the mod list as one recoverable set.
What to back up
- The world folder or folders.
server.properties, whitelist or operator files, and other server configuration.- The
modsdirectory and the exact modpack version. config,defaultconfigs, and any pack-specific scripts or data folders.- A note of the Java version, NeoForge build, and date of the backup.
Updating NeoForge
- Stop the server and verify that the backup can be opened or restored.
- Download the target NeoForge installer for the same Minecraft release.
- Run the new installer in the existing server folder.
- Start the server without changing several other variables at once.
- Check the log and load the world before inviting players back.
Updating a modpack is a coordinated change, not just replacing one file. Confirm the pack’s target Minecraft and NeoForge versions, replace the complete server-pack contents when instructed, and preserve the backup until the new version has been tested.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
“Wrong Java version” or an unsupported class version
Run java -version in the same terminal used to launch the script. If it is wrong, fix PATH and JAVA_HOME, remove stale Java entries, open a new shell, and test again. A 64-bit JDK is required; a 32-bit runtime can fail even when its major version appears correct.
NeoForge cannot load @user_jvm_args.txt
This usually indicates that the launch command is being run from the wrong directory, the argument file was moved or renamed, or a different Java installation is interpreting the command. Run the generated script from the server folder, restore the installer-created file, and verify Java selection.
The server stops immediately after adding mods
Read the first dependency, version, or “client-only” message in the log. Remove the latest mod, confirm a clean start, then compare the file against the pack’s supported Minecraft and NeoForge versions. Install missing dependencies together rather than guessing at replacements.
The server starts, but friends cannot connect
First test locally. If local connections work, recheck the host firewall, router forwarding to the correct private address, the external port, and whether the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT. If local connections fail too, fix the server or mod setup before changing router settings.

Compare the client’s and server’s Minecraft version, NeoForge build, mod filenames, and dependency versions. A player using a different pack revision can be rejected even when the server itself is healthy.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Running the server on your own computer maximizes file and JVM control, while managed hosting shifts operating-system and network work to a provider. The right choice depends on whether you value control and a fixed home setup or convenience and continuous availability.
