This guide explains the complete setup, how managed hosting differs from self-hosting, what an .mrpack contains, how clients join, and how to diagnose the failures that most often prevent a modded server from starting or accepting connections.

Start with a compatibility matrix
Before creating a server, choose one specific Modrinth pack release and write down three values from its project page:
- The exact Minecraft version.
- The mod loader: Fabric, Quilt, Forge, NeoForge, or another loader explicitly listed for that release.
- The pack release or version number.
Treat those three values as one compatibility tuple. The server, every client, the loader, and the pack must use the same tuple. A pack built for one Minecraft version is not made compatible by changing only the loader, and a client on a different pack release can be rejected even when the Minecraft version looks correct.

Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements state that editions and versions must match. Java Edition players can join Java-hosted games, but Java players cannot join a Bedrock-hosted game. Therefore, this article describes a Minecraft: Java Edition server and Java Edition clients.
Choose managed hosting or self-hosting
There are two practical routes. Managed hosting removes much of the operating-system and network administration; self-hosting or a virtual private server gives you direct control over files, startup arguments, backups, and the machine itself.

When managed hosting is the better fit
Use Modrinth Hosting when you want a guided Java server setup and do not want to maintain Java updates, an operating system, storage, firewall rules and recovery procedures. Confirm the host’s current plan limits, available regions, backup policy, supported loaders and pricing because those details can change.
When self-hosting or a VPS is worth the work
Choose a local machine or VPS when you need shell access, custom startup arguments, complete control of the world directory, your own backup policy, or server-side files that a panel does not expose. The trade-off is operational responsibility: you must patch Java and the operating system, secure the machine, monitor disk space, and recover the server when an update goes wrong.
What an .mrpack file contains
.mrpack is Modrinth’s modpack format. It records dependency information and metadata for files that the installer downloads. It can also include an overrides area whose files are copied into the instance, plus a server-overrides area for files intended specifically for the server.
That server-overrides mechanism is why a separate, unofficial “server pack” is not always necessary. A compatible server installer can read the pack metadata, download the declared dependencies and apply the server-specific files. Do not unzip an .mrpack into a server directory and assume that is a complete installation; use a tool that understands the format.

Inspecting a pack before installation
- Confirm the Minecraft version in the project page and pack metadata.
- Confirm the loader and its version where the release specifies one.
- Check that the release is the one your players will install.
- Look for server-overrides content and any server instructions supplied with the release.
- Keep the original
.mrpackfile and release number with your server notes so you can reproduce the installation.
Self-hosting: complete setup sequence
1. Prepare a dedicated server directory
Create a directory used only for this server and make sure the account running it can read and write that directory. Keeping the world, configuration, logs and downloaded files together makes backups and rollback much safer than mixing them with a personal Minecraft installation.
2. Install a compatible Java runtime
Java Edition requires a compatible Java installation. The required runtime depends on the Minecraft version and loader used by the selected pack, so use the runtime recommended for that tuple rather than assuming the newest Java release will work. Verify that the same Java executable is available to the account or service that will launch the server.
At a terminal, confirm that Java responds before installing anything else:
java -versionIf the command is not found, or it reports a runtime incompatible with the pack, fix Java first. A server that exits before creating its configuration files cannot be repaired through server.properties.
3. Download the official Java server JAR
Download the official Minecraft Java server JAR for the Minecraft version selected in your compatibility matrix and place it in the dedicated directory. Minecraft’s server download guidance says this setup is compatible only with Minecraft: Java Edition.
Use a clear filename such as server.jar only if you keep track of the original version elsewhere. If you retain the downloaded versioned filename, use that exact name in your launch command.

4. Run once, then accept the EULA
Start the JAR once so it can create its initial files. A typical launch form is:
java -jar server.jar noguiThe first run normally stops while it creates eula.txt. Open that file, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance value only if you agree to it. Save the file, then launch the server again. Never bypass the EULA check with a setting you have not reviewed.

Use one of the server-side routes Modrinth documents:
- Modrinth Hosting: select the server option and install the chosen pack through the control panel.
mrpack-install: run the installer according to its documentation, pointing it at the exact pack release and server directory.- itzg/minecraft-server Docker image: use the image’s documented environment and volume settings, then select the matching Minecraft version, loader and pack.
Do not combine files from several pack releases or copy a client instance over the server directory. Let the installer resolve the pack’s dependency metadata and apply its server-overrides files. If the pack author documents a particular loader installer or startup script, follow that route instead of substituting a different one.
6. Review server.properties
After the pack has been installed and the server has generated its configuration, open server.properties. Set the values that matter to your group:
server-port: the TCP port on which the server listens. Java guidance commonly references25565as the default.gamemode: the mode new players receive when they join.difficulty: the world’s difficulty setting.white-list: enable it when only named players should connect, then add those players through the server console.max-players: the connection limit you intend to allow; the practical limit may be lower if the pack is demanding.motd: the message shown in the multiplayer list.
Stop the server before editing this file, make one group of changes at a time, and keep a copy of the working configuration. Some options are read at startup, so restart after saving.

7. Open the network path
A player on the same home network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address without router changes. Players on the internet need a path through the host’s firewall and, for a typical home connection, the router.
- Allow the Java process through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Forward the configured Java port from the router to the host computer’s local address. If you changed
server-port, forward that port instead of assuming25565. - Give trusted players the correct public address and port. Do not publish your home address in a public forum.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections; router forwarding cannot overcome those limitations by itself.
Network changes expose a service to the internet. Keep Java, the loader and the operating system updated, use a whitelist for a private group, and avoid granting administrative privileges to untrusted players.
8. Start and validate in stages
- Start the server and watch the console until it reports that the world is ready for connections.
- Connect from a client on the same network first. This separates pack and server errors from router problems.
- Ask a trusted remote player to connect using the public address and configured port.
- Check the server log for authentication, missing dependency, crash or timeout messages if either test fails.
Do not treat a server process that merely remains open as proof that the pack is healthy. A successful validation includes a client joining the world and the console remaining free of repeating fatal errors.

Client installation and joining instructions
Each player should install the same Modrinth pack release, Minecraft version and loader that the server uses. The simplest approach is to give players the exact project and release name, not just a broad pack title that may have multiple versions.
- Install the Modrinth pack in the player’s Java Edition launcher.
- Choose the profile for the selected pack and confirm that its Minecraft version and loader match the server notes.
- Launch the profile and open Multiplayer.
- Choose Add Server, enter a recognizable name, and enter the server address. Include
:portwhen the server does not use the default port. - Save the entry and select Join Server.
A client rejection is usually a compatibility problem before it is a network problem. Compare the complete tuple: Minecraft version, loader, loader version where applicable, and exact pack release.

Minecraft’s updated Java Edition requirements, effective July 21, 2026, publish gameplay targets rather than a universal server allocation. The minimum 1080p/30 Fast target lists 8 GB of RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics. Server demand changes with the pack, number of simultaneous players, world-generation activity, view distance, simulation distance, active machines or farms, and storage speed. Allocate memory conservatively, then observe actual use rather than assigning all system RAM to Java. Leave enough memory for the operating system, file cache and other services.

Diagnose lag methodically
- Measure whether the bottleneck is CPU, memory, storage or network before changing settings.
- Reduce view distance or simulation distance when the server is spending too much time processing loaded chunks.
- Review the active mod list for features that generate entities, chunks or machines continuously.
- Check startup and tick-related log messages for a mod repeatedly delaying the server.
- Change one variable, restart if required, and observe the result before making another change.
There is no evidence-based single RAM number that fits every Modrinth pack. A smaller pack with two players and a large technical pack with a busy world have very different requirements.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server exits immediately
- Run
java -versionand compare the runtime with the pack and loader requirements. - Confirm that the Minecraft version in the server JAR, loader and pack release is identical.
- Read the first fatal error in the console rather than the final shutdown line; the first exception usually identifies the incompatible component.
- Restore the last known-good configuration if the failure began after an edit to
server.propertiesor a startup argument.
A mod or dependency is missing
Reinstall from the exact pack release and allow a compatible installer to read its dependency metadata. Check whether the required file belongs in the server-overrides area. Do not download a random version of the mod: a dependency built for another Minecraft version or loader can produce a different failure.
The client is rejected during connection
Compare both sides line by line: Minecraft version, loader and loader version, pack release, and any server-side files supplied by server-overrides. A client using a different edition cannot join a Java-hosted game, and a near-matching pack release is still a mismatch.
Friends cannot connect from outside the home
- Confirm the server is running and listening on the configured port.
- Verify that the host firewall permits Java on that port.
- Confirm the router forwards the same port to the correct local machine.
- Check that the player is using the public address rather than the host’s private LAN address.
- Investigate carrier-grade NAT, a changing public address, or an internet provider block if all local settings are correct.
Startup is very long or the world stutters
Large packs can take time to load and may generate substantial world data on first use. Watch CPU, memory and storage activity, then reduce view or simulation distance and review active mods if the server remains overloaded. Avoid changing several performance settings at once; otherwise you will not know which change helped or harmed.
The server works until an update
Back up the world and configuration before changing the pack. Record the previous pack release, loader and Minecraft version so you can roll back as a complete tuple. Updating only one component can create the same missing-dependency or client-rejection errors as an incorrect initial install.
Backups, updates and safe administration
Back up the right files
A useful backup includes the world directories, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, pack and loader notes, and any scripts or environment settings used to start the server. Stop the server or use a documented consistent-save procedure before copying a live world. Keep at least one backup away from the host machine and periodically test that it can be restored.
Plan updates as a controlled change
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the current world and configuration to a dated backup.
- Record the current Minecraft version, loader and pack release.
- Install the new pack release in a separate directory or preserve a rollback copy.
- Start it and read the full log for dependency or migration errors.
- Have one client update to the same release and join before inviting everyone else.
If the new release fails, stop the server and restore the previous complete tuple and backup instead of mixing old world files with new loader files.
Which hosting route should you choose?
- Choose Modrinth Hosting if guided installation, a control panel and reduced server administration matter more than shell-level control.
- Choose a local server if the players are nearby, you already have suitable hardware, and you can manage firewall rules, backups and uptime.
- Choose a VPS if you need an always-on machine, remote administration and predictable network access, and you are comfortable maintaining Linux or another supported operating system.
- Use
mrpack-installor the documented Docker image when self-hosting and you want an installer that understands Modrinth dependency metadata and server-overrides files.
Whichever route you select, the decisive compatibility rule does not change: install one exact pack release for one exact Minecraft version and loader, then make every client match it.
