To host Last Days of Humanity with friends, use the current matching files for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge: the client pack LDoH-0.5.7.zip and the server pack LDOH-serverpack+0.5.7.zip. Extract the server pack into a clean Forge 1.12.2 server directory, run Forge once, accept the Minecraft EULA, allocate 4–5 GB of RAM, and then expose the server safely through your firewall and router—or deploy it through a managed service that supports matching modpack server packs.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
This guide covers both approaches, the exact version-matching rules that prevent most connection errors, configuration choices, networking, backups, and recovery steps. The project files were uploaded on May 29–30, 2024, and the project page listed approximately 1.3 million downloads when checked on October 14, 2026.

What you need before creating the server
Last Days of Humanity (LDoH) is a Forge modpack rather than a standalone server application. Every player and the server must use the same pack release and the same Minecraft/Forge generation. The current official release identified by the project is version 0.5.7 for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Client file:
LDoH-0.5.7.zipfor every player. - Server file:
LDOH-serverpack+0.5.7.zipon the host. - Mod loader: Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Memory: begin with a 4–5 GB Java heap, the range recommended in the pack FAQ.
- World type: select
Default, which the FAQ specifically recommends. - Network access: either a reachable home/VPS server with the required port allowed, or a managed host that handles routing for you.
- Administrative access: permission to create files, run Java, edit
server.properties, and change firewall/router rules if self-hosting.
Do not mix 0.5.7 with an older client or server pack. A server can start normally while still rejecting players whose mods, configuration, or Forge build do not match.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Both models run the same Forge server files. The difference is who operates the machine and network.
| Area | Self-hosted computer or VPS | Managed modpack host |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | You create the Forge directory, extract the server pack, run it once, and edit the configuration. | A control panel can deploy a modpack with a matching server pack through a one-click workflow. |
| File and mod control | Full access to the server directory, configs, logs, worlds, and additional files. | Access depends on the provider’s panel and file tools, although supported hosts normally expose the same essential files. |
| Port forwarding | You allow the Minecraft port through the operating-system firewall and home router, or configure the VPS firewall. | The provider handles the public network endpoint; CurseForge’s hosted-server workflow is designed to avoid manual port forwarding. |
| Backups | You must create and verify your own world and configuration backups. | Backup tools vary by provider; confirm retention and restore controls before choosing a plan. |
| Location and latency | You choose the physical machine or VPS region and are responsible for its internet path. | You choose from the regions offered by the provider; actual latency depends on each player’s location and route. |
| Support | You diagnose Java, Forge, firewall, and mod errors yourself or through the project community. | The provider may assist with panel and machine issues, while modpack-specific problems still require the project’s support channels. |
| RAM limits | Limited by the host machine or VPS allocation. Start LDoH at 4–5 GB and observe usage. | Limited by the memory assigned to the plan. Confirm that the selected plan can provide at least the recommended range. |
CurseForge’s Servers feature is the most direct managed route described by the project documentation: it can create a hosted server from a modpack that has a matching server pack, without manual uploads or router port forwarding. The service documentation identifies Shockbyte as the infrastructure provider and Tebex as the billing platform. Availability, regions, memory options, prices, and support terms can change, so check the current panel before paying.
Download the correct LDoH files
Match one release everywhere
Start from the project’s current CurseForge files rather than assembling individual mods. Download LDoH-0.5.7.zip for each player and LDOH-serverpack+0.5.7.zip for the server. The client archive was uploaded May 29, 2024; the matching server archive was uploaded May 30, 2024.
Keep a copy of both archives and record the version in your server notes. If the project publishes a newer release later, update all clients and the server together. Do not replace only the server archive and expect existing 0.5.7 clients to remain compatible.
Prepare a clean server location
Create a new directory dedicated to this server. Avoid extracting into another modpack’s directory: old mods, config, world, or library files can create conflicts that are difficult to identify. Give the account running the server read/write permission to the entire directory.

Install the Forge 1.12.2 server
- Create the directory. Make a folder such as
ldoh-serveron the host machine or VPS. Keep it on storage with enough free space for the initial files, world growth, logs, and backups. - Install the Forge server build used by the pack. Use a Forge 1.12.2 server installation in this directory. Keep the Forge installer and generated server files together so you can identify which build is running.
- Extract the server pack. Unzip
LDOH-serverpack+0.5.7.zipdirectly into the Forge server directory. If the archive contains a top-level folder, move its contents so the server’s launch files, mods, andconfigpaths are in the directory from which you will start Forge. - Run Forge once. Start the Forge server from that directory. The first run creates configuration files, libraries, and the initial EULA file. A generated launch script may be supplied; otherwise use the Forge server jar identified by your installation, for example
java -Xms4G -Xmx5G -jar <forge-server-jar> nogui. Replace the bracketed value with the actual jar filename; do not type the brackets. - Accept the EULA. Stop the process, open
eula.txt, and change the required acceptance value only after reading and agreeing to Mojang’s terms. Start the server again and confirm that it proceeds to world generation. - Wait for a clean first start. The console should finish loading Forge and the pack without a fatal error. Stop it normally after the first successful generation so you can configure it before inviting players.
The server pack is the important distinction here. Installing only the client archive into a generic Forge server omits the server-side files supplied by the pack and is a common cause of missing-mod or registry errors.

Edit server.properties after the first run and before opening the server to friends. The exact property names are supplied by Minecraft 1.12.2; use the file’s existing syntax and keep values on one line.
Recommended starting choices
- World type: leave
level-typeat the normal/default value. The LDoH FAQ answers “Default” when asked which world type to select. - Server name: set a recognizable
motdso friends can identify the correct entry. - Difficulty: choose the level your group wants before generating the permanent world. Changing difficulty later is possible, but a fixed setting avoids surprises.
- Whitelist: enable it for a private group and add each player’s Minecraft name from the console or server controls.
- View distance: begin conservatively if the host struggles with tick time; increase it only after observing stable performance.
- Port: retain the configured port unless you have a reason to change it. If you do change it, the firewall, router rule, and address shared with players must all use the same value.
Make a backup of server.properties before major changes. Never edit configuration files while the server is actively writing them; stop the server first, then restart and read the console for errors.
Set memory and launch the server
Use the FAQ’s 4–5 GB starting point
The project FAQ recommends allocating 4–5 GB of RAM. A practical starting command is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx5G -jar <forge-server-jar> nogui
-Xms4G reserves a 4 GB initial heap and -Xmx5G caps it at 5 GB. If your host has less available memory, do not assign the entire machine to Java: the operating system and background services need headroom. If the server repeatedly approaches the cap or reports out-of-memory errors, stop it, check the host’s total memory, and increase the allocation only when the machine can safely provide it.

More RAM is not automatically faster. Watch the console for long pauses, monitor the process and system memory, and check whether lag appears during world generation or when several players explore new terrain. Keep a record of any change so you can revert a setting that makes the machine unstable.
Use a repeatable launch script
Put the launch command in the script format used by your operating system, and run it from the server directory. Keep the console visible during testing. A script makes restarts consistent and prevents accidentally launching a different Forge jar or working directory.
- Confirm the script points to the intended Forge 1.12.2 jar.
- Confirm the heap values are still 4–5 GB after editing the script.
- Confirm the working directory contains the extracted server-pack files.
- Stop with the server’s normal shutdown command before closing the terminal or rebooting the machine.
Make a self-hosted server reachable
On a home network
- Give the host computer a stable local address, either through a router reservation or an equivalent local-network setting.
- Allow the Minecraft server process and its listening port through the computer’s operating-system firewall.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule from the chosen public port to the host computer’s local address and the same server port.
- Start Forge and verify that it is listening before testing from outside your home network.
- Give friends your public address and port. Do not post that address publicly if the server is private.
Testing from inside the same Wi-Fi network does not prove that internet players can connect. Have a friend test from another network, or use an external reachability check that you trust. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a VPS or managed host instead of repeatedly changing local rules.
On a VPS
Open the selected port in both the VPS provider’s network firewall and the operating system’s firewall. Restrict administrative access, keep the server account separate from root or administrator accounts where practical, and do not expose remote-management services with default credentials. The Forge process should listen on the intended interface and port; confirm this in the startup log before troubleshooting player connections.
Connect players safely
- Install the exact
LDoH-0.5.7.zipclient pack and its required Forge 1.12.2 profile on every player’s computer. - Start the client once in single-player or the launcher so its files are generated.
- Share the server address and port privately.
- Have one player connect first while you watch the server console.
- Add the player to the whitelist if it is enabled, then repeat for the rest of the group.
A client that reaches the server but is rejected usually has a version, Forge, mod, or configuration mismatch. Capture the exact disconnect message and the server log rather than deleting files at random.

Use CurseForge’s one-click managed deployment
CurseForge’s Servers documentation describes a hosted workflow for modpacks that provide a matching server pack. In the Servers area, select the LDoH project and the compatible release, then follow the panel’s deployment steps. The service is intended to upload or install the server files for you and avoid home-router port forwarding.
- Open the current CurseForge Servers interface and sign in if required.
- Choose the LDoH project and select the same release that your players will install.
- Confirm that the panel identifies a matching server pack rather than offering only a client download.
- Select a memory allocation of at least the pack’s recommended 4–5 GB, subject to the plans currently offered.
- Choose a region close to most players when the panel provides that option.
- Deploy, wait for the first Forge startup to finish, and review the generated console output.
- Set the world type to Default, configure the whitelist and other properties, and make a test connection before sharing the address.
Managed hosting removes much of the networking work, but it does not remove version discipline. Every player still needs the same LDoH client release, and the host must deploy the corresponding server pack. Check the provider’s current memory limits, backup retention, support scope, billing terms, and cancellation policy before committing. The project page also displays a hosting promotion; treat any code or discount as time-sensitive and verify that it is valid for your region and plan.
Backups, updates, and routine administration
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world directory, server.properties, ops.json, whitelist files, and the pack’s config directory to storage outside the live server folder. Keep at least one backup that is not mounted on the server machine. Test a restore on a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpdate as a coordinated change
- Announce a maintenance window and stop player activity.
- Back up the world and configuration.
- Record the current LDoH and Forge versions.
- Download the new client and matching server pack from the project’s official file page.
- Update a separate test copy first and let it generate or load a test world.
- Give every player the new client pack before changing the live server.
- Start the live server, inspect the log, and test a connection before reopening the whitelist.
Never overwrite a working world with an untested pack update. Keep the previous server directory until the new version has been played successfully and your backup is verified.
Troubleshooting the problems that matter most
“Missing mods,” registry errors, or an immediate disconnect
- Confirm that the server uses
LDOH-serverpack+0.5.7.zip, not only the client archive. - Confirm that every player uses
LDoH-0.5.7.zip. - Confirm Minecraft is 1.12.2 and the Forge build matches the pack installation.
- Compare the server’s
modsandconfigfiles with a fresh extraction of the server pack. - Read the first relevant error in both the client and server logs; later stack traces are often consequences.
The server stops with an out-of-memory error
Check the Java command or hosting panel for the actual -Xmx value, then check total host memory. Start from the FAQ’s 4–5 GB recommendation and increase only when the machine has unused capacity. Close unrelated applications, avoid running multiple modded servers on the same small host, and review the log around the failure.
Best Value
Players cannot reach the server
- Verify that Forge is running and has finished loading the world.
- Verify that the port in
server.propertiesmatches the firewall and router rules. - Check both the operating-system firewall and, for a VPS, the provider firewall.
- Test from a different network; a local connection can succeed even when internet access is blocked.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or a changing home public address. Move to a VPS or managed service if your connection cannot accept inbound traffic.
The server starts but runs slowly
Watch the console during the slowdown and note whether it occurs during first-time world generation, exploration, or routine play. Confirm the Java process has the intended heap, reduce view distance temporarily, and avoid judging performance while the world is generating its first areas. Increasing memory without identifying the bottleneck can hide the symptom without fixing it.
The process exits during startup
Read the complete startup log from the first error, not only the final “server stopped” line. Check that the launch script uses the Forge jar in the current directory, that the server-pack files were extracted at the correct level, and that the Java process can read and write the directory. If the error remains pack-specific, use the project’s current Discord or wiki destination from its official page and include the version, Forge build, launch command, and relevant log excerpt.
What to tell your players
Send a short connection note containing the LDoH version, Minecraft/Forge version, client installation location, server address, port, and whether a whitelist is enabled. Tell players to remove older LDoH profiles from the launcher only if they are selecting the wrong profile; keeping separate profiles is safer when you run more than one pack.
For a private group, enable the whitelist, grant operator privileges only when necessary, and keep the server address out of public posts. The pack itself does not replace normal server security: use strong account credentials, update the host operating system, and keep backups offline or on separate storage.
When each hosting method makes sense
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a reliable computer or VPS with at least the recommended memory.
- You want unrestricted access to worlds, configs, logs, and custom server changes.
- You are comfortable managing firewalls, port forwarding, Java processes, and backups.
- Your players are near the machine’s network location or you can choose an appropriate VPS region.
Choose managed hosting when
- You do not want to expose a home network or troubleshoot router forwarding.
- You prefer a panel that installs a supported modpack and starts the server for you.
- You need a selectable data-center region, scheduled tools, or provider-operated machine maintenance.
- You accept a recurring provider charge and will verify memory, backup, support, and cancellation terms before purchase.
There is no authoritative, current price, performance benchmark, regional latency study, or support-quality comparison for third-party LDoH hosts in the available project material. Treat advertisements for one-click installation as evidence that deployment is offered—not as proof of performance or value.
