How to host a Halloween game night online with friends

A step-by-step guide to hosting a Halloween game night online, including platform choices, Jackbox-style setup, player limits, privacy, accessibility, themed activities, and fixes for common problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can host a fun Halloween game night online with one main game, a backup plan, a video call or screen-sharing method, and a private way to distribute the game lobby code. The host launches the game, shares its screen, admits friends to the call, explains the rules, and starts once everyone has joined. For a Jackbox-style setup, only the host needs to own the game; guests use a browser on a phone, tablet, or computer as their controller.

The most reliable approach is to keep the technology simple, make the Halloween theme optional and low-pressure, and prepare a second activity in case the first game does not suit the group. The steps below cover invitations, equipment, remote-play choices, privacy, accessibility, timing, and common failures.

1. Decide what the evening will include

Choose one main game before you send invitations. Add one backup that can start quickly if the first title has a compatibility problem, too few seats, or rules that do not fit the group. A backup can be a second short party game, Halloween trivia, a spooky would-you-rather round, or a costume show-and-tell. These opening activities are optional ideas rather than requirements.

Set a clear start time

Put the time zone in the invitation, especially when friends live in different regions. State whether the call opens a few minutes early for audio checks. Do not promise a fixed finish time unless your group needs one; game length depends on the title, number of players, and how much conversation happens between rounds.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Give guests the information they need

Your invitation should contain:

  • The date, start time, and time zone.
  • The video-call or screen-sharing platform and its join link.
  • The game title, if guests need to install anything.
  • Whether guests should bring a phone or another internet-connected device for a browser controller.
  • An optional costume, snack, drink, or background theme.
  • A note that costumes and participation in the theme are optional.
  • A request to join a few minutes early if they have not used the platform before.

Send the game room code only after invited guests are in the call. Do not put the code in a public social post or an open chat where strangers can see it.

2. Pick the remote-play format

For a friends-only event, the host normally runs the game locally and makes its screen visible to everyone else. Jackbox Games’ official remote-play guidance describes three practical approaches. Choose based on the devices your group already has, the number of active players, and whether the game audio reaches the call clearly.

Approach How it works What guests use Publisher-stated detail
Video-conference screen sharing The host starts a call, launches the game, and shares the game window or screen. The call for video and audio, plus a phone, tablet, or computer browser when the game uses a browser controller. Jackbox describes conferencing and screen sharing as a remote-play method.
Steam Remote Play Together The owner launches a compatible local co-op title and invites remote participants through Steam. Steam on a supported device; controller requirements depend on the title. Jackbox describes up to four players or more with faster connections.
Discord sharing The host connects the game and voice/video conversation through Discord and shares the game. Discord for the call; a separate browser device may still be needed for games that use phone controllers. Jackbox describes connecting the game and video for up to nine friends.

The capacity figures in the table come from Jackbox’s support page, originally dated December 5, 2023. Treat them as publisher guidance for that setup, not a universal limit for every game or a promise that current platform limits are unchanged. Check the chosen title and platform before inviting a large group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a normal video call when simplicity matters

A regular call with screen sharing is often easiest for guests who already know how to join a meeting. Everyone sees the same game screen while each active player uses a browser controller if the title supports one. Test whether the call transmits game audio and whether notifications, private messages, or unrelated windows can appear in the shared view.

Use Steam Remote Play Together for supported local co-op titles

This option lets one owner share a local co-op game through Steam rather than asking every guest to buy the same copy. It is appropriate only when the selected title supports the feature and the participants can use Steam. Connection quality affects the practical number of players; Jackbox’s guidance describes four players or more with faster connections, so verify the current title-specific limit.

Use Discord when your group already spends time there

Discord can combine voice, video, and game sharing in one place. Jackbox’s support guidance describes support for up to nine friends in this arrangement. Confirm the current limit, and check that guests can hear both the host and the game. If the title uses a phone browser as a controller, tell guests to keep Discord on one device and the controller page on another.

3. Prepare the host setup

What the host needs for a Jackbox-style game

Jackbox’s official how-to guidance says one person needs to buy and install a Party Pack or selected game on a laptop, PC, or another compatible device. That device runs the game and shares the game screen. Guests do not each need to purchase the same title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Guests need an internet-capable phone, tablet, or computer to open the browser controller, plus a way to view the shared game. The Jackbox controller works in a browser and does not require a separate mobile app or Jackbox account. These requirements describe Jackbox’s setup; unrelated online games may require different software, accounts, or controllers.

Test before invitation day

  1. Install or update the game on the host device.
  2. Open the call platform and practice sharing only the game window.
  3. Join the game with a second device or a trusted friend to test the controller page.
  4. Check microphone, speaker, and game-volume levels. Ask the test participant whether speech and game audio are both understandable.
  5. Confirm that the host can switch between the game and call controls.
  6. Place the charger nearby and close unrelated apps, notifications, private documents, and browser tabs.
  7. Write down the backup activity and keep its instructions in a separate tab or document.

Jackbox recommends wired internet when possible. If the game opens full-screen and makes it difficult to return to the call, its Party Pack 10 guidance suggests turning off full-screen mode in the lobby settings.

4. Choose a game that fits the group

Check active-player and audience rules

Jackbox says most of its games support one to eight active players. Many titles also allow additional participants to join as an audience, where they may influence the result. The listed player count is a requirement for active play, while audience support varies by title. Read the current rules for the exact game before promising a place to everyone.

For a group larger than the active-player limit, rotate players between rounds or let some guests participate as the audience. Explain the rotation before starting so nobody is surprised when they are watching rather than submitting answers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the title to the audience

Look for the settings your group actually needs:

  • Extended timers for guests who need more reading or typing time.
  • Family-friendly settings when children or mixed-age relatives are present.
  • Moderation of player-created content.
  • Strict profanity filtering.
  • Audience participation for people who are not active players.

Jackbox notes that its games are rated Teen and that some recent titles include family-friendly and moderation controls. Check the exact rating and settings before selecting a title for younger guests. No single game is established as the universally best Halloween choice, so use the group’s age, humor, language comfort, and technical experience as the deciding factors.

5. Keep the lobby private

A public room code can allow uninvited people to enter before the game begins. Jackbox recommends hiding the lobby screen at the start of each new game, sending the room code privately to invited players, and revealing the shared game screen after everyone has entered. Some listed games also offer password-protected rooms.

  1. Start the call and confirm that invited guests are present.
  2. Launch the game without displaying the lobby code to the call.
  3. Send the code in a private message to the people you invited.
  4. Wait for the expected names to appear in the player list.
  5. Reveal or share the game screen and begin.

This protects the game lobby from casual drop-ins; it does not guarantee privacy for the video call itself. Use the call platform’s own waiting-room, admission, screen-sharing, and participant controls when those options are available.

6. Add Halloween atmosphere without adding friction

Put the theme in the invitation, one opening activity, and a small visual or food choice. Keep the game itself easy to join so a costume or decoration does not become a technical prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low-preparation ideas

  • Invite costumes but make them optional.
  • Ask everyone to bring a favorite Halloween snack or drink.
  • Play a Halloween playlist while people arrive, then lower or mute it once the game starts.
  • Use a themed virtual background or a single decoration behind the host.
  • Run one spooky poll or question while late arrivals connect.
  • Ask each person for a brief costume, pet, or favorite horror-story explanation.

Keep the opening activity short. Its purpose is to give early arrivals something to do while the host checks audio and admits people, not to delay the main game.

7. Follow a simple host sequence

Use this order on the night so guests always know what happens next:

  1. Open the call five to ten minutes early.
  2. Admit participants and ask everyone to confirm that they can hear the host.
  3. Explain the controller device and where guests will enter the room code.
  4. Run the brief Halloween warm-up while late arrivals connect.
  5. Launch the game and keep the lobby code hidden.
  6. Send the code privately to invited players.
  7. Check that active players and audience members are in the correct places.
  8. Explain scoring, turn order, timer settings, and how to ask for help.
  9. Start the first round, watching the call and game for audio or connection problems.
  10. Pause between rounds for water, a costume reveal, or a quick reset.

Explain rules in plain language and demonstrate the first controller action before demanding fast answers. A thirty-second practice can prevent several minutes of confusion.

Accessibility and comfort settings

Remote play gives people different reading speeds, keyboards, connection quality, and comfort levels. Ask before starting whether anyone needs more time or a different way to participate.

  • Use extended timers when the selected game provides them.
  • Read important prompts aloud, but do not reveal answers.
  • Keep chat available for guests whose microphones are unreliable.
  • Allow audience participation or rotating turns for people who do not want to submit every answer.
  • Explain how to mute notifications and adjust call volume.
  • Tell guests how to leave a round without closing the entire call.

For children or mixed-age groups, enable the exact title’s family-friendly, moderation, and profanity-filter settings before guests enter. Do not assume that one setting applies to every Party Pack.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Guests can hear voices but not the game

Stop the round and check the host’s screen-share audio option. Share the game window rather than an unrelated desktop, raise the game’s volume slightly, and ask one guest to confirm the change. If the platform cannot transmit game audio reliably, keep the call for voices and let guests view the shared screen while the host describes important sounds or prompts.

The shared game is difficult to read

Switch from a tiny application window to a larger game window, remove unnecessary video tiles, and ask guests to use the platform’s screen-share enlargement control. If full-screen mode prevents the host from managing the call, turn it off in the lobby settings as recommended in the Party Pack 10 guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The room code was exposed

Hide the lobby immediately, stop accepting unknown names, and start a fresh room if the title allows it. Send the new code privately. A password-protected room can add another barrier when the selected game supports one.

A guest cannot open the controller

Ask the guest to use a current browser on an internet-connected device, re-enter the room address, and check that they are using the newest code. In a Jackbox-style setup, no separate controller app or Jackbox account is required. If the guest is trying to play through the call device, move the call to one device and the browser controller to another.

The host’s connection becomes unstable

Stop camera video temporarily, close downloads and unrelated streams, and use wired internet if available. Reduce the number of shared applications and share only the game window. If the problem continues, switch to the backup activity while the host reconnects.

Late arrivals miss the lobby

Finish the current round before changing rooms unless the title makes mid-game entry easy. Send the lobby code privately, explain whether the person should join as an active player or audience member, and use the next round for their first turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Player-created content becomes uncomfortable

Use the title’s moderation and profanity-filter controls before the game starts. Remind guests that the group is friends-only, stop a round if necessary, and move to the backup activity if the selected game cannot provide the level of moderation your group needs.

Costs and equipment decisions

A compatible device is optional if you already own one. The host can use a supported laptop, PC, console, smart TV, or other device only when the selected game supports that platform and can share its screen through your chosen call method. The physical-product need most clearly established for the Jackbox model is a host laptop or PC for someone who does not already have a compatible device.

Only the host needs the Jackbox game copy for friends to join through its browser-controller flow. Guests should not buy duplicate copies unless the particular game or platform explicitly requires it. Prices, platforms, and availability change, so check the current store listing for the exact title before purchase rather than relying on an old price.

Host checklist

  • One main game and one backup activity selected.
  • Current player count and audience rules checked for the exact title.
  • Call link, time zone, and device instructions sent.
  • Host game installed and tested with screen sharing.
  • Game audio, microphone, and controller flow verified.
  • Lobby privacy plan ready, including private code delivery.
  • Timer, family-friendly, moderation, and profanity settings reviewed.
  • Halloween warm-up and optional costume or snack prompt prepared.
  • Backup activity available if the game or connection fails.

Bottom line

Host the event as a short sequence: invite clearly, test the host device, use a call or supported remote-play method, hide and privately distribute the lobby code, explain the first round, and keep a backup ready. A small Halloween prompt, flexible timing, and the game’s own timer and moderation settings make the night feel themed without making it harder to join.
