The reliable way to host Fantasy Realm for Minecraft 1.18.2 is to install the matching Forge client and the separate Fantasy Realm Server Pack v3, then launch the supplied server script on a Java installation approved by that pack’s own instructions. Do not use the older 1.16.5 server pack or assume its “Java 8 Required!” note applies to the 1.18.2 release.

What Fantasy Realm 1.18.2 includes
Fantasy Realm is a LunaPixelStudios RPG and exploration modpack distributed through CurseForge. The project describes itself as “A RPG ADVENTURE & EXPLORATION MODPACK FOCUSING ON QUALITY!” Its 1.18.2 v3 release is listed with Forge as the loader and dated 7 October 2023. The matching Fantasy Realm Server Pack v3 is listed separately for Minecraft 1.18.2 and dated 8 October 2023.
The project page reported 459,765 total downloads in the captured listing. Its feature description claims more than 800 quests, five new dimensions, more than 100 new Overworld biomes, more than 100 new mobs, more than 200 dungeons and structures, customizable backpacks, magic mods, JourneyMap and a MineColonies-built fantasy kingdom. It also advertises “250+ Mods.” These are the pack author’s feature claims, not an independent performance test, but they explain why a Fantasy Realm server is substantially heavier than a vanilla 1.18.2 world.

Download the client release and server-pack file from the Fantasy Realm files listing. Select the 1.18.2 entries and specifically choose the v3 server pack. Keep the downloaded archives so you can identify the exact version later. Do not substitute an entry labelled 1.16.5; it belongs to another generation of the pack.
Self-hosting: complete setup
1. Create a clean server directory
Make a new directory dedicated to the server rather than extracting over an old Forge installation. A path such as C:MinecraftFantasyRealm-1.18.2-v3 on Windows or ~/minecraft/fantasyrealm-1.18.2-v3 on Linux keeps worlds, logs and configuration separate from other servers.

Extract the complete server-pack archive into that directory. A normal server pack is expected to contain mod jars, configuration files and a supplied start script, although the exact filenames can change. Inspect the archive you actually downloaded; do not create a replacement script before checking what the pack author supplied.
2. Install and verify the required Java runtime
Open the server-pack readme or the comments in its launch script and follow the Java requirement written for v3. Then open a terminal in the server directory and run:
java -versionThe command must return the Java installation that the launch script will use. If it reports an unexpected version, correct your system PATH or edit the script’s Java path according to the pack instructions. The “Java 8 Required!” message visible on an older 1.16.5 file cannot be copied to this 1.18.2 server without confirmation from the v3 files.

3. Run the supplied script once
Launch the included Windows batch file or Unix shell script from the server directory. The first run normally creates a Minecraft EULA file and additional runtime files before stopping. If the script fails immediately, read the first error in the terminal and verify Java before changing mods or deleting files.

Open the generated eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to its terms. Save the file and run the same supplied script again. The server should proceed to world loading and eventually report that it is ready for commands. Keep the console window or service running while players connect.
5. Configure the server before inviting players
Stop the server with its console stop command so files are written cleanly, then edit server.properties. Set the values that match your group:
- Server name/MOTD: give players a recognizable name.
- Difficulty: select the intended challenge level before exploration begins.
- Whitelist: keep it enabled during testing and add each player’s Minecraft name explicitly.
- View distance: start conservatively and raise it only after observing tick time and memory use during exploration.
- Network port: choose the port you will open in the firewall and, if necessary, forward on the router.
Do not edit configuration while the server is running unless the particular setting is documented as safe to change live. Restart after changes so Forge and the mods read the new values consistently.
6. Open the network path
For a server on your home network, first allow the Java process through the operating system firewall on the chosen TCP port. Then create a router port-forward rule from that port to the computer’s local address. Reserve that local address in the router or assign it a stable address so the rule does not break after a reboot.

Test from the host computer or another device on the same network before asking friends to connect. A successful local connection proves that the server process and pack are functioning; an outside connection failure then points to firewall, router or internet-provider restrictions. Give friends only the public address and port. Never publish operating-system passwords, router credentials or server-operator credentials.
7. Match every client to the server
Each player should install the Fantasy Realm 1.18.2 v3 client profile with Forge and let the launcher install the pack’s exact mod list. A client with a different pack generation, Forge build, mod jar, configuration or default configuration can be rejected before joining the world.
When diagnosing a mismatch, compare the filenames and versions in the client’s mods, config and defaultconfigs folders with the server pack. Do not copy a random client folder over the server: visual and performance mods marked as client-only belong on the player’s computer, not on the dedicated server.
8. Make a first backup
Stop the server cleanly and copy the complete working set before anyone makes significant progress. At minimum, include the world directory, mods, config, defaultconfigs, launch scripts and server.properties. Store the backup outside the live server directory and label it with the pack version and date.

Its stages are selecting the modpack, choosing a plan, selecting a region, entering server details and paying. When a host presents several Fantasy Realm files, select the 1.18.2 v3 server-pack file explicitly rather than accepting an automatic or older choice. Before purchasing, read the host’s current terms for allocated RAM, CPU share, storage, backups, version selection, world-upload limits and support. Plan prices and limits change, and a plan advertised in an old article may no longer exist or may not be available in your region.
Typical managed-hosting sequence
- Choose a modded-Minecraft server product that permits custom Forge 1.18.2 packs.
- Select a data-center region close to most players to reduce latency.
- Upload or select the Fantasy Realm 1.18.2 v3 server pack, following the host’s file-selection instructions.
- Set the server name, difficulty, whitelist and view distance in the provider panel or generated
server.properties. - Start once, accept the EULA through the host’s control panel or file editor, and start again.
- Use the host’s backup function before changing mods, configs or world-generation settings.
- Give players the address and port shown by the provider; they normally do not need to configure a home router.
Managed hosting reduces operating-system updates, port-forwarding work and some backup chores. It does not remove the need to match the client release, inspect logs or choose enough CPU and memory for the way your group explores the world.
How much RAM and CPU does Fantasy Realm need?
There is no authoritative, reproducible Fantasy Realm 1.18.2 v3 benchmark that maps a particular RAM allocation to a guaranteed player count. The pack’s 250-plus mods, multiple dimensions, extensive world-generation content and large quest and structure catalogue indicate a heavier workload than vanilla, but they do not establish a universal “X GB supports Y players” rule.
Treat capacity as a measurement exercise using your actual configuration. Test with the intended view distance, simulation distance, number of concurrent players and the activities that create the most load, especially several players generating new terrain or entering different dimensions at once. Monitor:
- Memory: watch the Java heap and the host’s remaining system memory for sustained pressure or repeated garbage-collection pauses.
- Tick time: a server that cannot complete ticks promptly will feel delayed even when players have plenty of client FPS.
- CPU share: world generation and mod logic can saturate a single busy core, so compare the host’s real CPU allocation rather than RAM alone.
- Disk space and I/O: exploration expands the world rapidly, while logs and backups also consume storage.
Start with the resources offered by your chosen machine or hosting plan, then increase them in controlled steps when measurements show a sustained bottleneck. Avoid promising a fixed player count in your server rules; the same allocation can behave differently with a freshly generated world, established bases, many machines and several active dimensions.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Troubleshooting connection and startup failures
The server stops immediately
- Confirm that the extracted files are the 1.18.2 v3 server pack, not a 1.16.5 archive.
- Run
java -versionin the same environment used by the launch script. - Read the first meaningful exception or missing-mod line in
latest.logand the console. The final “server stopped” message is often only a consequence. - Check that the script is being run from the server directory and that it can read the
modsand configuration folders. - Undo the most recent mod or configuration change from a backup rather than deleting the world.
Players receive a missing-mod or version error
Compare the client’s Fantasy Realm release, Forge loader and mod list with the server. Reinstall the exact client profile if files were manually changed. Remove client-only visual or performance mods from the server when the pack documentation identifies them as client-side. Do not “fix” a mismatch by generating a new world; the issue is in the files being loaded.
The server runs but nobody can join from outside
- Join locally first to prove the server and client are compatible.
- Verify that the firewall rule allows the chosen TCP port for the Java process.
- Check that the router forwards the same port to the server computer’s current local address.
- Confirm that friends are using the public address and the correct port, not the private address used inside your home.
- If forwarding is correct but outside access still fails, ask your internet provider whether inbound connections are restricted or whether your connection uses carrier-grade NAT.
Performance degrades during exploration
Record when the slowdown occurs and whether players are generating new terrain, moving between dimensions or operating large modded builds. Lower view distance before adding resources, then compare tick time, memory and disk activity during the same scenario. If the host remains CPU- or memory-bound, increase the allocation in a controlled step or move to hardware with a stronger CPU. Preserve a backup before changing world-generation settings.
A world or configuration appears corrupted
Stop the server and copy the current directory for later diagnosis. Restore the last known-good world and configuration backup to a separate test directory first. Never regenerate the live world or delete configuration folders until you have a recoverable copy; doing so can permanently remove player progress or make a rollback harder.
Updating, backups and safe operation
Keep the server and client on the same pack generation until you have deliberately planned an upgrade. Before replacing a modpack, Forge build or configuration, stop the server cleanly and back up the world, mods, config, defaultconfigs, scripts and server.properties. Record which files changed so you can reverse the update.
For a small private group, leave the whitelist enabled while testing, grant operator privileges only to trusted accounts and remove unused operators. Check free disk space regularly because exploration expands the world and repeated backups can consume more storage than expected. Keep the launch script and Java path documented so another administrator can restart the server without guessing.
The practical choice is straightforward: self-host when you want maximum control and are comfortable maintaining Java, networking and backups; choose managed hosting when router access, uptime and routine administration matter more than total control. In either case, success depends first on using the exact Fantasy Realm 1.18.2 v3 server pack and matching Forge clients, then on measuring performance with your own players rather than relying on a fixed RAM-per-player promise.
