To host a Create: Arcane Engineering server, use the dedicated CAEServer1.9.zip server pack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 on Forge—not the client manifest—run it with Java 17, accept the EULA, allocate at least 4 GB (8 GB is the author’s recommendation), and expose TCP port 25565. Create: Arcane Engineering (CAE) is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack built for Minecraft 1.18.2 with Forge. CurseForge lists CAE 1.9.3 as the main release, published on November 8, 2023. The project page showed 724,245 downloads when accessed on October 14, 2026; that count can change.
The pack combines mechanical automation with magic and exploration. Its description names Create, PneumaticCraft, Thermal Expansion, Forbidden & Arcanus and Ars Nouveau, alongside ruins, custom recipes and quests. Engineering and arcane chapters can begin as separate progression paths, but later recipes and objectives make the two paths depend on one another. A server therefore needs the complete mod set and configuration, not just Create.

Server and client identities
- Game: Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2.
- Mod loader: Forge for 1.18.2.
- Pack release: CAE 1.9.3 is the listed release used in this guide.
- Dedicated-server download: the CurseForge file named
CAEServer1.9.zip. - Runtime: Java 17.
The server pack is different from the client download. It contains the server-side mods and configuration needed by a dedicated instance. A client manifest is intended for a launcher and is not, by itself, a runnable server.
How much RAM does the server need?
The pack author recommends 8 GB of RAM and identifies 4 GB as the minimum. A hosting provider’s sizing guidance estimates 6 GB for two to four friends and 8 GB for five to ten players. Those host figures are planning guidance rather than a universal benchmark: actual use changes with view distance, world size, chunk generation, automation machines, exploration and any additional content you install.

Set a maximum heap with -Xmx and leave some physical memory for Java overhead, the operating system and other services. For an 8 GB machine, a typical starting command is java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar forge-installer.jar nogui only when the installed Forge server jar is actually named that way; use the filename created by your Forge installation. Do not assign every gigabyte on a shared desktop or a small virtual machine.
Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Both routes can run the same CAE files. The important difference is who operates the machine and network.

What managed plans document
FadeHost documents one-click installation, Forge 1.18.2, Java 17, a 6 GB recommendation and a free seven-day 8 GB trial. Its published sizing example is 6 GB for two to four friends and 8 GB for five to ten players. Treat the trial and all plan terms as time-sensitive and check the provider’s current page before paying.
DSN Servers has described CurseForge installation, Java 17 and an 8 GB recommendation, but its listing reported that new servers were paused when it was crawled. StickyPiston has described pre-installed CAE 1.9.3 hosting. Availability, prices, data-center locations and resource guarantees can change, so confirm them at checkout. None of these services is affiliated with Mojang or with the pack authors.
Self-hosting: complete setup procedure
1. Download the dedicated server pack
- Open the Create: Arcane Engineering Files page on CurseForge.
- Find the Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge server-pack file named
CAEServer1.9.zip. - Download that archive. Do not substitute the normal client profile or a launcher manifest.
Keep the archive unchanged until you have a working baseline. If you later add a mod, make a note of the exact file and version so every client can be synchronized.

2. Create a clean server directory
Make a directory used only for this instance, such as CAE-server. Extract the contents of CAEServer1.9.zip into it. A clean directory prevents unrelated Forge jars, old worlds or settings from being loaded accidentally and makes backups straightforward.
On Windows, use the archive extractor’s “Extract all” option and select the new directory. On Linux, an equivalent command is:
unzip CAEServer1.9.zip -d CAE-server
cd CAE-serverUse the path appropriate to your operating system. Do not run the server from inside the compressed archive.
3. Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime or development kit, then open a terminal or Command Prompt in the server directory and run:
java -versionThe output should identify Java 17. If it reports another major version or the command is not found, correct the Java installation or PATH before troubleshooting Forge. Minecraft 1.18.2 is documented here with Java 17; using the wrong runtime is a common cause of immediate startup failure.
4. Install Forge if the pack has not done so
Some server packs include the Forge installer or a launch script; others require you to install the loader. If the extracted files do not contain an installed server, place the matching Forge installer in the directory and run:

java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServerThe installer may create a Forge server jar, libraries and launch scripts. Use the exact Forge build supplied or required by the CAE 1.9.3 files. If the installer has a different filename, substitute that filename in the command; do not rename a random client installer and assume it is equivalent.

5. Accept the Minecraft EULA
Start the server once so it can generate eula.txt and initial configuration files. Stop it after the first run, open eula.txt, change the line to:
eula=trueSave the file and start the server again. Accepting the EULA records your agreement to Minecraft’s terms; it does not install the modpack or make the server reachable from the Internet.
6. Allocate memory and start the instance
Use a launch script so the memory setting is repeatable. A starting example for a machine with adequate physical RAM is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar <your-forge-server-jar> noguiReplace <your-forge-server-jar> with the Forge server jar created in your directory. If you are starting with the 4 GB minimum, use -Xmx4G; if your host plan provides 6 GB, use a maximum no higher than the plan’s actual allocation. Keep free memory for the operating system and monitor the console rather than assuming a larger heap always improves performance.
On the first successful boot, Forge registers a large number of mods and may prepare world-generation data. The process can take several minutes. Let it finish and look for a server-ready message before connecting. Repeatedly killing the process during this stage can leave incomplete files or make diagnosis harder.

7. Configure the world before inviting players
Stop the server cleanly from its console, then review server.properties. Set the world name, difficulty, player limit and view or simulation distances appropriate to your hardware. Keep a copy of the original configuration before changing several values at once. Create a first backup of the world directory after the server has generated it and before anyone begins a long build.
If your group will explore far from spawn, consider pre-generating the areas you expect to use before the launch event. This is operational advice intended to reduce simultaneous exploration load; it is not a measured performance guarantee.
8. Open the network path
- Give the server computer a stable local address on your home network, using your router’s reservation feature if available.
- Forward TCP port 25565 from the router to that local address.
- Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall, or create an inbound rule for TCP 25565.
- Start the server and test from a different network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot.
Share your public address only with the people who need it. Players on the same home network can usually connect with the server computer’s local address; players elsewhere need the public address and the forwarded port. If outside connections still fail, recheck the router target, firewall profile and whether your Internet service permits inbound connections. A managed host avoids home-router configuration.

Every player should install CAE 1.9.3, or precisely the release running on the server, through a Java Edition launcher. The Minecraft version, Forge version and mod files must match the server’s set. A newer client may be refused, and a mismatched client can connect unsuccessfully or lack recipes, blocks and other content.
Ask players to remove unrelated client modifications while testing. Shaders, HUD overlays and texture packs are client-side additions, but a client-only mod copied into the dedicated server’s mods directory can cause startup errors. Keep a separate client profile for optional visual changes and do not copy those files to the server unless the mod’s documentation explicitly requires a server component.
Keeping everyone synchronized
Pin one release
Write down the pack release, Minecraft version and Forge build in your group’s instructions. When updating, stop the server, back up the world and archive the old server directory. Update the server first, then have every player install the same release before reconnecting. Never update one player’s profile as an experiment on a shared world.
Recognize a mismatch
- The launcher refuses to join with a message about missing or extra mods.
- The server log reports that a required mod, dependency or Forge version is different.
- A player joins but sees missing blocks, recipes or quest content.
- The server starts after a mod change but an existing world behaves unexpectedly.
Compare the filenames and versions in the server’s mods directory with the client profile. Restore the previous backup if an update changes world behavior or removes content, then test the new release on a copy of the world.

The server exits immediately
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 17. - Check that you extracted
CAEServer1.9.zip, rather than placing a client manifest in the server directory. - Read the first error and the final “Caused by” section in the console or log; fix one reported dependency at a time.
- Remove client-only mods from the server and restore the original pack files if you experimented with additions.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the server console has completed startup and is listening on the expected port.
- Recheck TCP 25565 forwarding to the correct local computer and the operating system firewall rule.
- Test with the correct address: local address for a housemate, public address for an off-site player.
- Verify that the player’s CAE release, Minecraft version and Forge loader exactly match the server.
The server runs out of memory or becomes sluggish
- Start with at least 4 GB, target 8 GB where possible, and do not allocate more than the host or machine can provide.
- Check whether several players are generating new terrain simultaneously; pre-generate intended play areas before a group launch.
- Reduce view or simulation distance in
server.propertiesif the machine is consistently saturated. - Look for unusually large Create contraptions, automation lines or added mods before simply increasing the heap.
The first boot appears frozen
Initial Forge registration and world generation can take several minutes for a large pack. Watch CPU, disk activity and the log, and wait for the ready message. Repeated restarts during registration can create partial state. If there is no progress after a reasonable wait, stop once, read the log from the first error, confirm Java 17 and check that the server pack was extracted completely.
A world becomes laggy after exploration
New terrain generation can create a temporary load spike. Stop unnecessary clients, allow generation to finish and consider pre-generating a defined region before the next group session. Keep regular world backups so you can recover if a mod update or interrupted write damages the save.
Backups, updates and everyday administration
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the entire world directory and retain at least one backup outside the live server folder. Back up before changing Forge, the pack release, configuration files or major mods. Label backups with the date and version so you know which combination they contain.
Update in a controlled order
- Read the release notes for the CAE version you intend to use.
- Copy the current server directory and world to a rollback location.
- Install the new server files in a separate test directory.
- Start the test copy and let Forge finish registration and world loading.
- Join with a client using the same release and check machines, quests and saves.
- Schedule the live update, announce downtime and keep the old backup until the new world has been verified.
Protect the live directory
Do not edit mod jars while the server is running. Keep logs, launch scripts and configuration files with the instance so a replacement machine can be rebuilt. Restrict file access to the operator account and avoid downloading random jars into the pack’s mods folder; an untracked file can create a mismatch or a security problem.

When managed hosting is the better choice
Choose a managed server when the group wants to play quickly without configuring a router, maintaining Java or keeping a computer powered at home. A panel can simplify file uploads, start and stop controls, scheduled tasks and backups, while provider support can help interpret logs. Confirm that the plan supports Forge 1.18.2, permits custom modpacks, provides enough guaranteed RAM and offers backups you can download.
Self-hosting is preferable when you already have suitable hardware, need operating-system access, want to tune Java flags or prefer to avoid a monthly subscription. It also makes experimentation easier, but the operator is responsible for uptime, firewall exposure, power failures, Internet outages and every recovery step.
