You can host a Cobblemon server on your own computer by installing the matching Java runtime, extracting the correct server pack into a separate folder, accepting Minecraft’s EULA, allocating appropriate memory, and running the pack’s startup script. Players on your home network connect through the host PC’s local address; players elsewhere need an operating-system firewall rule and router forwarding for the server’s TCP port.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The critical decision is compatibility: choose one Minecraft version, one Cobblemon release, and one loader, then use the server pack and client installation built for that exact combination. The instructions below cover the documented Fabric and NeoForge paths, LAN play, internet access, maintenance, and the failure points that most often prevent friends from joining.

What self-hosting a Cobblemon server involves
A self-hosted server is a Java process running on your PC rather than a service operated in a data center. The computer must stay powered on, connected to the network, and running the server process whenever friends want to play. You control the files, world, mods, permissions, updates, and backups, but you also handle every technical problem.
Cobblemon’s official modpack listing states that “Cobblemon does NOT have an official server.” That means there is no single official address that every player joins. You can run the software at home or rent a compatible Minecraft server from a third-party provider; this guide focuses on running it on your own PC.

Choose one compatible Minecraft, Cobblemon, and loader combination
Do this before downloading anything. A server and its clients must agree on the Minecraft version, Cobblemon version, mod loader, and mod list. A Fabric client cannot join a NeoForge server simply because both contain Cobblemon, and a different Minecraft or Cobblemon build can be rejected during connection.
| Distribution | Documented compatibility | Java guidance | Memory guidance | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official Cobblemon modpack listing | Fabric distribution; select the exact Minecraft and Cobblemon release shown by the listing | The supplied listing does not state one universal Java version; follow the requirement for the selected release | 2.5 GB minimum; 3 GB or more for best performance, according to the 2026 listing | Install the same Fabric pack version on every client and use its matching server files |
| Cobblemon Realms server-pack documentation | Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge | Java 21 | About 8 GB dedicated to start, adjusted for player count and world size | Use the exact server-pack version that matches the clients; do not mix Fabric files with NeoForge files |
The two memory figures describe different scopes. The official modpack listing gives a baseline for that pack, while the Cobblemon Realms guidance is for its larger documented server-pack setup. “Dedicated” means memory reserved for the server process; it is not the total physical memory installed in the PC. Leave enough memory for the operating system and other programs so the machine remains responsive.

1. Record the target versions
Write down the Minecraft version, Cobblemon version, loader, and server-pack release you intend to use. Treat that note as the reference for every player. If you change any one of those values later, stop the server, back it up, and update the clients and server together.
2. Install the required Java runtime
Install the Java runtime required by the selected pack. The current Cobblemon Realms instructions for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge specify Java 21. A Fabric release may have a different requirement, so use the requirement attached to that particular release rather than assuming that every Cobblemon pack uses the same Java version.
After installing Java, confirm that the server can find it from the account that will run the server. If the startup script reports that Java is missing or uses an older runtime, correct the system’s Java selection before troubleshooting mods.

3. Download the matching server pack
Obtain the server pack for the exact combination you recorded. Do not download a generic mod folder and attempt to turn it into a server. The supplied pack can include loader files, configuration, libraries, scripts, and mod versions that must remain together.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Create a dedicated folder
Create a new folder used only for this server. A short path that you can back up easily is preferable. Extract every server-pack file into that folder, preserving its directory structure. Do not run the server from the download archive, and do not place unrelated worlds or mod experiments in the same directory.
5. Launch the supplied startup script
Run the platform-appropriate startup script included with the pack. Its filename, Java path, memory flags, and loader arguments are authoritative for that pack. The first launch may create additional files and stop because Minecraft requires EULA acceptance.
6. Accept the Minecraft EULA and restart
Read Minecraft’s EULA, then change the generated EULA setting to indicate acceptance if you agree to it. Start the script again when the pack instructs you to do so. A server that stops immediately with an EULA message has not completed this step; changing unrelated settings will not fix that condition.
7. Set the server memory
Use the startup configuration supplied by the pack to select a memory allocation appropriate to that pack and your player count. Use the figures in the compatibility table as the starting point, then monitor whether the operating system remains usable and whether the server reports memory pressure. Increasing allocation cannot compensate for an incompatible mod set or an overloaded computer.

8. Wait for a clean startup, then stop it normally
Allow the first run to finish generating its files and world. Stop the process using the server’s normal stop command or shutdown procedure rather than closing the window abruptly. A clean stop reduces the chance of a damaged world or incomplete file write before you begin networking tests.
Test a local connection before opening the server to the internet
Testing on the same home network isolates installation problems from router and ISP problems. Start the server and leave it running while you test.
- Find the host PC’s local address. On Windows, view the active adapter in Network settings or run
ipconfig. On Linux, inspect the active interface withip addr. Use the private address assigned by your router, commonly in a range such as192.168.x.xor10.x.x.x. - Confirm the server port. The default Minecraft server port is TCP 25565. If the pack or your configuration uses another value in the server settings, record that value instead.
- Allow the process through the operating-system firewall. Permit the Java runtime or server process on the network profile used by your home network. A firewall exception for the wrong Java installation will not help if the script launches a different runtime.
- Connect from the host PC. Use the game’s multiplayer screen and the local address, or the loopback address when appropriate, with the selected port.
- Connect from another device on the same network. Give that player the host’s local address and port. If this works, the server, pack, and basic firewall path are functioning before any router change.
LAN-only play does not require router port forwarding. The local address is not the address that players on the public internet should use, and it normally cannot be reached from outside your home network.
Let friends join from outside your home
Remote access adds two separate requirements: the PC must accept the connection, and the router must send the selected port to that PC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Give the host PC a stable local address
Reserve the PC’s address in the router’s DHCP settings or configure a suitable fixed address according to your network design. If the address changes, an existing forwarding rule may point to the wrong device. Do not choose an address that conflicts with the router’s automatic address pool.

2. Create the firewall rule
Allow inbound TCP traffic for the server port and permit the Java/server process through the operating-system firewall. If you changed the server port, use that same value in the rule. Keep the rule as narrow as practical and remove temporary broad rules created during testing.
3. Forward the port in the router
In the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule that forwards external TCP port 25565 to the host PC’s fixed local address and the same internal port. The default is documented by TechRadar (2025) and the Cobblemon Realms documentation. If you changed server-port, forward and share the changed port instead; forwarding 25565 will not reach a server listening elsewhere.

Outside players use your home internet connection’s public address, followed by the selected port when it is not the default. A public address is sensitive network information, so give it only to intended players. Your ISP may change it over time, requiring you to tell players the new address.
5. Test from a genuinely external connection
Have a friend test while using a different internet connection, such as mobile data. Testing from inside the same LAN can appear to work even when the router does not support hairpin connections. Keep the server running and check the firewall and router logs if the external attempt never reaches the PC.
When forwarding cannot work
Some internet services place customers behind carrier-grade NAT or another upstream gateway. In that arrangement, the router may show no directly reachable public IPv4 address, and a forwarding rule cannot create an inbound path through the ISP’s equipment. Ask the ISP whether inbound forwarding or a public address is available. If it is not, use a managed hosting service or another network arrangement rather than repeatedly changing local firewall rules.

Keep the server safe and maintainable
Back up before every change
Stop the server before copying or updating files. A complete backup should include the world, all dimensions, player data, configuration, and administrative files in the server folder. Store at least one copy outside the live folder so a failed update cannot overwrite both the server and its backup.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that a backup exists merely because a copy command completed. Periodically restore it to a separate test folder and confirm that the world and player data load. A backup that has never been tested is only an unverified copy.
Update in a controlled order
- Tell players that the server will be unavailable and stop it normally.
- Make and verify a complete backup.
- Read the target pack’s version requirements, including Minecraft, Cobblemon, loader, and Java.
- Update the server pack as a unit rather than replacing one mod from a different release.
- Update every client to the same combination before reconnecting.
- Start the server and watch for compatibility or data-conversion errors.
- Keep the previous server folder until the new version has been tested and the backup is known to restore.
Plan for availability
Friends cannot join while the host PC is asleep, powered off, disconnected, or running another task that prevents the server from responding. Configure the PC’s power settings deliberately, keep the server folder on reliable storage, and schedule updates when players are not expecting access. A home server also uses the household’s upload capacity, so heavy network activity elsewhere can affect play.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The server exits immediately and mentions the EULA | The EULA setting was not accepted or the script was not restarted | Complete the EULA step in the generated file, save it, and run the supplied startup script again |
| A client is rejected during login | Minecraft, Cobblemon, loader, or mod-list mismatch | Compare all four items exactly on the client and server; do not mix Fabric and NeoForge files |
| The client reports that Java is missing or incompatible | The required runtime is not installed or the script is selecting another Java installation | Check the selected pack’s Java requirement; the documented 1.21.1 NeoForge path requires Java 21 |
| The host can play, but another device on the same network cannot | Wrong local address, server not listening on the expected port, or firewall block | Recheck the host’s current local address, selected port, and local-network firewall permission |
| LAN works, but remote players cannot connect | Firewall rule, forwarding target, port, public-address, or ISP limitation | Verify TCP forwarding to the fixed host address, confirm the selected port, test externally, and check for carrier-grade NAT |
| Players could connect yesterday but not today | The host’s local or public address changed, the PC is off, or the server port changed | Confirm that the process is running, check both addresses, and compare the router rule with the current server-port setting |
| The server becomes unstable after an update | Partial update or incompatible mod/configuration change | Stop the server, restore the verified backup, and update the complete matching pack rather than individual files |
Change one variable at a time when diagnosing a connection. First prove that the server starts, then prove host-PC access, then LAN access, and only then test the public route. This sequence prevents a router problem from being mistaken for a mod or Java problem.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
A third-party Minecraft host can keep a server online without your home PC, but it trades some control for convenience. Current prices, commissions, and Cobblemon pack availability vary and should be checked directly with the provider.
| Consideration | Host it on your PC | Use managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | Uses existing hardware and electricity; no hosting subscription, but electricity and hardware wear are your responsibility | Usually a recurring plan fee; exact pricing is provider- and plan-dependent |
| Control over files and mods | Direct access to the complete server folder, world, configuration, and Java process | Usually control through a panel or file access, subject to the provider’s rules and plan limits |
| Setup difficulty | You install Java, the pack, firewall rules, and possibly port forwarding | The provider usually supplies an installed environment, though you still select and maintain the pack |
| Uptime when your PC is off | Unavailable when the computer, server process, or home connection is down | Designed to remain online independently of your home PC, subject to provider outages |
| Backups and updates | You schedule, store, and verify backups and perform every update | Tools or automated backups may be available, but you must confirm what is included and test restores |
| Router and firewall exposure | Remote play normally requires a home firewall rule and port forwarding | The provider handles the public network path; your home router need not expose the server |
| Technical support | You diagnose Java, mods, networking, and data recovery yourself | Provider support may help with the platform, while pack and mod compatibility remains your responsibility |
Self-hosting is a good fit when you want complete file control, can leave the PC and network available, and are comfortable maintaining backups and forwarding a port. Managed hosting is more practical when the host PC cannot stay on, your ISP blocks inbound connections, or friends need dependable access without home-network administration.
Pre-launch checklist
- One exact Minecraft, Cobblemon, loader, and server-pack version is written down.
- Every player has the matching client installation.
- The required Java runtime is installed and selected by the startup script.
- The server pack is extracted into its own folder.
- The EULA has been accepted and the server completes a clean startup.
- Memory is set according to the selected pack’s guidance and the PC still has room for the operating system.
- A host-PC connection and a second-device LAN connection both work.
- The host has a stable local address before any router rule is created.
- The firewall allows the correct Java/server process and TCP port.
- Remote access uses a forwarding rule for the selected port, if outside players are required.
- A complete, restorable backup exists before the server is opened to regular play.
Once those checks pass, your PC is functioning as the Cobblemon server. The ongoing work is operational rather than mysterious: keep the exact versions aligned, keep the machine and network available, back up before changes, and treat firewall and router access as part of the server configuration.
