Host a better Skyblock server by matching the exact modpack, Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime and memory allocation before you open the port. Download the pack’s server pack, install the loader it specifies, give Java enough RAM without starving the operating system, complete NeoForge’s first-run EULA step, and make every player use the identical pack version. The procedure below covers self-hosting and managed hosting, with practical checks for common failures.

Start with the exact Skyblock pack
“MC Skyblock” is not the name of one universally defined modpack. Skyblock packs differ substantially in mods, scripts, world generation, loader and Minecraft release. Examples include SkyFactory, FTB Oceanblock, All the Mods 10: To the Sky, and NeoForge Foundry SkyBlock Edition. Choose one named pack first, then use that pack’s official download page for every version decision.

Download a server pack, not a client pack
A client archive is designed for a player’s launcher and may omit files that a dedicated server needs. On the pack’s official page, CurseForge or Modrinth, look specifically for a download labelled Server Pack, Dedicated Server or equivalent. Keep the archive’s version number; players must install that same release.
Record the loader and Minecraft version
Before installing anything, write down the Minecraft version and whether the pack uses NeoForge, Forge or another loader. A loader installer for the wrong Minecraft release can appear to run successfully while producing a server that crashes as soon as mods load. Do not substitute a newer loader merely because it is available: use the version named by the pack.

A single recent guide reports that many large Forge-style packs released from 2024 through 2026 use NeoForge, while packs on Minecraft 1.20.1 and earlier commonly remain on Forge. That is directional guidance rather than a compatibility rule. The pack’s manifest and server instructions take precedence.
Size the machine before installing
Skyblock automation, chunk loading and world-generation scripts can make a modded server much heavier than a vanilla server. Treat the pack’s stated minimum as a starting point, not a performance guarantee. Leave memory for the operating system, the loader, monitoring tools and filesystem cache; assigning every available gigabyte to Java usually makes the whole machine less responsive.

Choose a sensible Java heap
Set the minimum and maximum heap close together so the process does not repeatedly resize itself. For example, if your host allocates 8 GB to the server, a configuration such as -Xms6G and -Xmx6G leaves room for the operating system and native memory. The exact values should follow the pack’s requirement and your player count; the example is not a universal preset.
Watch the machine rather than relying on a single number. Persistent swapping, long garbage-collection pauses or a steadily climbing memory graph indicate that the allocation or pack is too demanding. Increasing Java’s heap cannot compensate for an undersized CPU, slow storage or a mod that is generating excessive entities.
Plan storage for the world, not just the download
The archive is only the beginning. Generated chunks, region files, logs, crash reports and backups consume space over time. A 40 GB SSD minimum appears on one Foundry SkyBlock hosting listing; other packs may need more as exploration expands. Keep free space available so the server can save regions and write a crash report when something goes wrong.

Use the Java release required by the pack
NeoForge does not bundle Java. Install a suitable Java runtime yourself and verify it from a terminal with java -version before running the installer.

Do not infer Java from the word “Skyblock.” The Minecraft version controls the runtime requirement. If several Java versions are installed, call the required executable explicitly in your start script, or configure the hosting panel’s Java selector, so an operating-system update does not silently switch the server to another runtime.
Install a NeoForge server step by step
The following sequence follows NeoForge’s documented server flow. Substitute the installer filename and paths used by your pack.
- Create a clean server directory. Use a directory dedicated to this world, separate from your client instance and from other servers. Copy the downloaded server-pack archive into it and extract it there.
- Install and check Java. Run
java -version. Confirm that the major version matches the pack’s Minecraft target before proceeding. - Download the NeoForge installer. Obtain the installer version named by the pack. Do not use a generic “latest” installer unless the pack explicitly supports it.
- Run the server installer. From the server directory, execute
java -jar neoforge-installer.jar --installServer, replacing the filename with the actual installer name. The installer creates the loader files and launch scripts. - Set memory in
user_jvm_args.txt. Open the generated file in a text editor and add or adjust the heap settings, for example-Xms6Gand-Xmx6Gwhen that allocation is appropriate. Keep enough RAM for the operating system and do not duplicate conflicting heap flags in multiple scripts. - Start the server once. On Linux or another Unix-like system, run
./run.sh. The first launch normally stops after generating files; this is expected and is not, by itself, an installation failure. - Accept the EULA. Open the generated
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you agree to it. Save the file. - Start it again. Run
./run.sha second time. Wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading before attempting to connect. - Keep the launch method consistent. Use the generated script for routine starts and stops. If you run the Java command manually later, preserve the loader’s arguments and the heap settings from
user_jvm_args.txt.
On Windows, use the generated Windows batch script when the pack supplies one; the installer’s files and the EULA sequence are the same. A hosting panel may expose these operations as buttons, but it still needs the correct server-pack files, loader and Java version.
Open the server to other players
Local testing first
Connect from the same machine or local network before changing router settings. This isolates pack and Java errors from firewall and internet-routing problems. Confirm that the world loads, the expected mods appear in the server log, and a new player can complete the initial spawn or island setup.

Forward the standard port
For friends outside your home network, forward TCP port 25565 from the router to the computer running the server, and allow that port through the host firewall. Give the server machine a stable local address so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a reboot. If router forwarding is impossible, use a reputable tunnel service and follow its port and authentication instructions instead.
Share only the public address and port required for connection. Never expose administrative panels, remote shells or file shares on the same forwarding rule. Keep the server software and operating system updated, and remove unused ports after testing.
Make client versions identical
Every player needs the same Minecraft version, loader version, modpack release and configuration files. A client on a newer pack revision can fail with missing mods, registry mismatches or rejected connections even when the server itself is healthy. Distribute the pack’s official client profile or manifest rather than asking players to assemble mods individually.
Forge packs and older installations
If the pack specifies Forge, use its Forge installer and launch instructions instead of substituting NeoForge. Forge remains the likely fit for many packs targeting Minecraft 1.20.1 and earlier, but the pack’s own documentation is the authority. Keep the server and client on the same Forge build; mixing loaders is not a supported upgrade path.

Legacy packs may also require an older Java runtime. Install that runtime alongside newer Java versions if necessary, then point the server’s launch script to the correct executable. Changing Java without changing the pack can produce class-version errors before the world even starts.

Improve reliability after the first launch
Use conservative startup settings
Keep -Xms and -Xmx close, sized to the memory you actually purchased or installed. Do not copy flags from a different pack without checking what loader and Minecraft version they target. A single guide suggests adding -Dfml.readTimeout=120 and -Dfml.loginTimeout=120 for heavy Forge or NeoForge packs to reduce connection timeouts. Because that recommendation comes from one guide rather than a loader-wide guarantee, verify that the pack’s own documentation supports those properties before using them.
Consider server-side memory optimization
FerriteCore is often recommended as a server-side memory optimization for modded Minecraft. No dependable percentage saving is established here, so treat it as a compatibility-checked optimization, not a promise of a fixed reduction. Add it only when the pack supports the exact Minecraft and loader versions you are running, and test a copy of the world before changing a live installation.
Separate experiments from the live world
Copy the entire server directory before changing the loader, Java runtime, mod list or configuration. Test upgrades on the copy, including island generation, automated machines and player login. If the test fails, restore the previous directory rather than deleting individual files whose dependencies are unknown.
Read the console before guessing
The first meaningful error is usually more useful than the final shutdown line. Record the Minecraft version, loader build, Java version, installed pack revision and the complete stack trace. A crash that names a missing registry entry or mod class usually indicates a version mismatch; an out-of-memory message points to allocation or workload; a bind or connection error points to the network layer.

Self-hosting gives you control over files, Java and upgrades, but you supply the machine, network availability, backups and troubleshooting. Managed hosting charges a recurring fee in exchange for a control panel, persistent datacenter connectivity and support. The right choice depends on whether you value control or reduced administration.
What managed panels usually simplify
Guides commonly describe managed services that install packs from CurseForge or Modrinth through a control panel and offer NeoForge, Forge and Fabric selections. Treat those capabilities as provider-specific: confirm the exact pack, loader build, Java choices, storage quota and backup policy before paying. Free hosts rarely provide enough memory for demanding modpacks, so a no-cost plan may be unsuitable even when it can launch a small vanilla world.
Questions to ask before choosing a plan
- How much RAM is dedicated to the Java process, and can you change
-Xmsand-Xmx? - Is the advertised storage SSD-backed, and is the quota large enough for generated chunks and backups?
- Can you select the exact Java major version required by the pack?
- Does the panel install the official server pack, or only a client-side mod list?
- Can you upload custom configuration files and add server-side optimization mods?
- Are player slots a hard limit, and does the provider throttle CPU or network traffic?
- How are automated backups restored, and can you download a complete copy of the world?
A one-click installer saves setup time, but it does not remove compatibility work. You still need to verify the pack release, loader, Java runtime and memory allocation, and you should keep an independent copy of the world.

The installer exits immediately
- Run
java -versionand compare the major version with the pack’s Minecraft target. - Confirm that you downloaded the server installer and server pack, not only a client profile.
- Run the command from the directory where the installer JAR is located, or provide its full path.
- Use the exact NeoForge or Forge build named by the pack rather than a newer “latest” file.
The first launch stops with an EULA message
This is normal for the NeoForge sequence. Open eula.txt, review the terms, set eula=true only if you accept them, save the file and run the generated script again.
The server runs out of memory
- Check that the heap flags in
user_jvm_args.txtare spelled correctly and are not overridden later in the launch command. - Compare the allocation with the pack’s stated minimum and the number of active players and loaded chunks.
- Leave operating-system headroom; a machine that swaps can look like a Java memory problem.
- Reduce simultaneous world generation and test supported optimization mods such as FerriteCore on a copy.
Players time out during login
- Test a local connection to separate mod loading from internet routing.
- Verify that TCP port
25565is forwarded to the current server address and allowed through the firewall. - Check that clients use the identical pack, loader and Minecraft versions.
- For a heavy Forge or NeoForge pack, investigate the optional timeout properties only after confirming them in the pack’s documentation.
The connection is refused after a restart
Check the server console for a bind error, confirm that the process finished loading, and verify that the router still forwards to the machine’s current local address. A changed DHCP address is a common reason a previously working forwarding rule stops reaching the server.
A client reports missing mods or registry mismatches
Reinstall the official client profile for the server’s exact pack release. Do not copy only the mods folder from another version: scripts, configuration files and datapacks can also change the registry. If the server was upgraded, test a fresh client profile before editing individual files.
A repeatable upgrade procedure
- Write down the current pack release, Minecraft version, loader build, Java version and heap settings.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console and copy the complete server directory, including the world, configuration and scripts.
- Read the target pack’s server instructions and confirm its Java and loader requirements.
- Install the new files in a separate test directory rather than overwriting the live server.
- Start the test copy, load an existing island and verify machines, quests, dimensions and player login.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule downtime, replace the live files with the tested set and retain the old copy for rollback.
- Give players the matching client release and announce the exact version they should select.
Never treat a Minecraft version change as a cosmetic update. Loader changes, Java changes and mod migrations can each alter world data, so a complete pre-upgrade copy is your recovery point.
Launch checklist
- Named Skyblock pack selected and server-pack archive downloaded.
- Minecraft version and loader recorded from the pack’s instructions.
- Java installed and verified with
java -version. - NeoForge installer run with
--installServer, or the pack’s Forge procedure followed exactly. - Heap values set in
user_jvm_args.txtwith operating-system headroom. - First
./run.shlaunch completed, EULA accepted, and the server started again. - Local connection tested before exposing the server publicly.
- Port
25565forwarded or an alternative tunnel configured. - Firewall rule limited to the required game port.
- Every player supplied the identical pack, loader and Minecraft versions.
- World directory copied before upgrades or mod changes.
Bottom line
A dependable MC Skyblock server is built from compatibility discipline rather than a single magic setting: use the official server pack, match its loader and Minecraft release, install the correct Java runtime, allocate measured RAM, follow NeoForge’s installer and EULA sequence, and test networking locally before forwarding port 25565. Managed hosting can remove much of the infrastructure work, but it cannot make an incompatible pack, Java version or client install work.
