You can use Cloud Run as part of a 24/7 YouTube streaming setup, but a standard service request cannot run indefinitely: its timeout is capped at 60 minutes. A Cloud Run job is also finite, with a maximum task duration of seven days—or one hour for GPU tasks. For a long-running encoder, start with a Cloud Run worker pool or a continuously running instance, then build in process supervision and recovery. Google does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming just because an instance is kept warm.

Choose a Cloud Run resource that fits continuous streaming

Cloud Run has different resource types for request-driven applications, finite tasks, and background work. The right choice depends on whether your encoder must stay alive between HTTP requests and how you will recover when a process or instance stops.

Cloud Run option What it suits Lifetime and scaling considerations Fit for a continuous encoder
Service HTTP requests, such as a control panel, webhook receiver, or start/stop controller. A request times out after five minutes by default and can be configured up to 60 minutes. Services scale in response to requests and can scale to zero. Use it to control or monitor streaming, not to hold one HTTP request open as a 24/7 worker. Google Cloud: service request timeouts; service autoscaling.
Job Finite batch work or a bounded streaming segment that exits when complete. A task defaults to 10 minutes and can be configured up to 168 hours (seven days). GPU tasks have a one-hour maximum. It can run a segment, but a job task cannot be the indefinitely running process. A scheduler can start later tasks, but you must engineer handoffs, retries, and duplicate-start prevention. Google Cloud: jobs; task timeouts.
Worker pool or continuously running instance Background work that should keep running without waiting for an HTTP request. Google describes worker pools as an option for always-on background workloads. Its overview also describes continuously running instances for cases where singleton longevity is preferred over high availability. Neither description guarantees a process will never stop. These are the closest documented patterns for a long-running encoder. You still need supervision, health monitoring, and recovery. Google Cloud: Cloud Run resource types.

Plan the stream before deploying

Decide what the encoder will stream

Choose whether the container will generate the media, relay an upstream source, or receive a feed from physical production equipment. That decision affects resource sizing and whether capture hardware is involved. A software relay does not, by itself, require a camera or capture card.

Keep the long-running process separate from the control plane

Use a worker pool or continuously running instance for the encoder process. A service can provide controls or receive notifications, but do not make the stream depend on an HTTP request remaining open: even a request configured for the maximum service timeout will end. If a request times out, the connection closes and the client receives a 504; the container may continue processing after the connection closes, so a timed-out request can leave an encoder running without its original client connection. Google recommends retry and client-reconnection tolerance for request timeouts above 15 minutes. Google Cloud documents the timeout behavior and guidance.

Choose singleton simplicity or stronger availability deliberately

A single continuously running process may be simpler, but it is still a single point of failure. A more resilient design needs to detect interruption and restore the YouTube ingest workflow. Decide how you will prevent two workers from publishing simultaneously if a restart or retry creates overlapping processes.

Build and deploy a restartable encoder

  1. Package the encoder or relay in a container. Make the main process exit clearly on unrecoverable failure, and ensure the runtime or a supervisor can restart it. Keep stream status and process health observable rather than relying only on a container being present.
  2. Choose the Cloud Run background resource. Configure a worker pool or continuously running instance for the encoder. If you also deploy a service, reserve it for short control operations and monitoring.
  3. Store the YouTube stream key as a secret. Inject it through a secret-backed configuration at runtime. Do not commit it to source code, bake it into an image layer, include it in a public command, or write it to logs. Limit access to the identity that needs it and rotate it if it is exposed.
  4. Create the encoder-based live stream on YouTube. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder and selecting encoder settings. Confirm the current ingest and output requirements for the stream you are creating rather than copying an old preset: YouTube’s guidance can change. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Start the encoder and check the full path. Confirm that the process is running, that YouTube receives the feed, and that the live event is actually publishing. The Cloud Run instance being healthy is not proof that the YouTube ingest connection is healthy.
  6. Configure supervision and alerts. Monitor encoder exit, failed ingest, and prolonged loss of outbound traffic. Alert someone who can act on those signals, and define how the worker reconnects to YouTube after an interruption.
  7. Test recovery before relying on the stream. In a controlled stream, deliberately test a process restart and a lost ingest connection. Check that recovery does not leave duplicate publishers or require a person to re-enter a secret.

Can a Cloud Run job keep a stream alive?

Not indefinitely in one task. The maximum configured task timeout is 168 hours, and GPU tasks have a one-hour maximum. Jobs are a reasonable fit for finite processing or bounded stream segments that complete deliberately; they are not a perpetual-worker setting. Google Cloud’s task-timeout documentation gives the limits.

You can arrange for a scheduler or controller to start another finite task, but that only moves the hard problems to the transitions. Design for the outgoing task ending early, the next task failing to start, retries launching duplicates, and a gap while one task hands off to another. Verify that the YouTube ingest session behaves as intended across those transitions before treating segmented jobs as a continuous stream.

What minimum instances do—and do not—guarantee

Cloud Run services normally scale in response to incoming requests and can scale to zero. A minimum-instance setting can keep a baseline of service instances warm; Google advises configuring at least one when a service does background work while not handling requests. But minimum instances are best effort and can be restarted at any time. They are a scaling and billing choice, not durable process storage or an uptime contract. Request timeout guidance, autoscaling documentation, and minimum-instance documentation describe these behaviors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For streaming, do not treat a warm instance as recovery logic. The encoder needs a restart path, and the application needs to reconnect to YouTube after an interruption.

Protect the channel and the stream key

  • Use content you are authorized to stream. A stream key does not grant rights to music, video, or other material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for your channel and content.
  • Check suitability for monetization separately. Permission to stream a work does not necessarily settle whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content requirements. Consult the current YouTube rules that apply to your channel; a Cloud Run configuration cannot establish policy compliance.
  • Restrict and protect the key. Treat it like a password: keep it in secret-backed configuration, restrict who can read it, and avoid logs, container images, repositories, and screenshots that could expose it.
  • Keep a recovery procedure. Know how to stop the publisher, replace an exposed key, and restart the encoder without unintentionally creating a second live output.

Troubleshoot common failures

The stream stops at about an hour

Likely cause: A service request reached its configured timeout, or a GPU job reached its task limit. A standard service request cannot exceed 60 minutes; a GPU job task is capped at one hour. Fix: Move the encoder to a suitable background resource or design finite job segments with deliberate handoff and recovery. Do not increase the service timeout expecting it to become unlimited.

The service returns 504, but the encoder may still be running

Likely cause: The request connection ended at its timeout while container work continued. Fix: Check actual process and YouTube ingest status before retrying a start action. Make start operations idempotent or otherwise prevent a retry from creating a duplicate encoder.

The instance is warm, but the broadcast has stopped

Likely cause: Minimum instances do not prevent restarts, and an instance’s availability does not prove that the encoder or outbound ingest is healthy. Fix: Monitor the process and ingest separately, supervise the encoder, and test restart-and-reconnect behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A replacement job overlaps the previous one

Likely cause: A retry or scheduled launch began before the old task had fully stopped. Fix: Add coordination so only the intended publisher can run, and verify the outgoing task has stopped before starting the next segment.

The container runs, but YouTube does not receive a usable stream

Likely cause: The encoder output or ingest setup does not match the current YouTube instructions, or the stream key is wrong or unavailable to the process. Fix: Compare the live event and encoder configuration with YouTube’s current encoder setup and settings pages, then verify secret injection without printing the key. YouTube encoder setup; YouTube encoder settings.

The deployment works but costs more than expected

Likely cause: The estimate did not include the chosen resource, region, CPU and memory, billing mode, always-on runtime, outbound data, or recovery design. Fix: Recalculate using the actual deployment and current Google Cloud pricing rather than assuming a fixed monthly cost.

A GPU is not presented as necessary for an ordinary software encoder. If you do use a GPU, Google requires instance-based billing for GPU and bills the GPU over the instance lifecycle. Check the current Cloud Run GPU documentation before choosing that configuration.
