The VPS must stay powered on and sustain the required outbound bandwidth; a restart policy helps recovery but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
How the VPS setup works
The basic path is media input → FFmpeg running on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest. For a prerecorded program, FFmpeg reads a local file and loops it. For a camera or another live source, the input changes, but the VPS still needs a persistent encoder process and a reliable connection to YouTube.

A VPS is rented server infrastructure, not a physical computer you need to keep at home. It can run continuously, but its actual availability and network route depend on the hosting provider and plan. Choose a server with enough sustained outbound capacity and, if transcoding, enough CPU or GPU resources for your selected video settings.
Check YouTube eligibility and create an encoder stream

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. YouTube explains that stream keys are like a password and address for the stream in Manage live stream settings.

Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public command, shared configuration, screenshot, or shell history. Use a protected configuration or environment variable with file permissions restricted to the account running FFmpeg. Reset the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Prepare the VPS and media
Install and check FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg through the supported package source for the VPS operating system or use a trusted FFmpeg build. Then check the installed version and available options with ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h full. Online FFmpeg documentation is rolling and may differ from the installed build, so verify options on the server you will use.
Inspect the input before choosing copy or transcode
Use ffprobe to inspect the input file’s container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and resolution. Stream-copying avoids video re-encoding and uses less CPU, but is suitable only when the source codecs and stream characteristics work with the intended YouTube output. Transcoding gives control over compatibility and bitrate but consumes more server resources.
For a prerecorded file, confirm it can be read by the account that will run FFmpeg and that the VPS has enough disk space if you also plan to keep local recordings. A network-mounted or remote input adds another dependency: if that source becomes unavailable, the encoder cannot continue reading it.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the selected codec and settings to the stream configuration and intended resolution. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

The bitrate and headroom figures are YouTube recommendations accessed in 2026, not guarantees that a particular VPS route will maintain stream health. Measure sustained outbound capacity, not download speed, and allow for other traffic and any backup encoder.

Build the FFmpeg command
There is no universal command that fits every file, codec, and FFmpeg build. These templates show the shape of the setup; replace placeholders, confirm that options exist in the installed build, and test with an unlisted stream before relying on it.
Loop a prerecorded file and transcode to H.264
For a local file, a basic loop-and-transcode command can look like this:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This example targets 1080p30 H.264 at the YouTube-recommended 5 Mbps video bitrate, with a two-second GOP at 30 fps. It assumes the encoder can produce the chosen output and that the audio source is suitable for AAC. Adjust resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GOP, and audio settings together; do not use a real stream key in a command that may be retained in shell history. A stream-copy command may be more efficient when the source already has suitable codecs and timing, but verify the resulting stream in Live Control Room.
Publish a live input instead
For a live camera, capture device, or another real-time source, replace the file input with the appropriate input options for that device or feed. The exact input syntax depends on the source and operating system; keep the output codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and RTMPS destination aligned with YouTube’s guidance. Confirm that the input itself remains available if the source process or device is remote from the VPS.
Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
Do not rely on an SSH session remaining open. Run FFmpeg under a service manager or process supervisor configured to restart it after a nonzero exit, and capture standard output and error in persistent logs. FFmpeg documents protocol reconnect controls and a FIFO muxer example intended to attempt RTMP output recovery after temporary network failure in its protocol documentation and format documentation. Confirm that the options you use are supported by the installed FFmpeg version.

Neither can fix a VPS outage, a failed input source, a prolonged network problem, or an issue on YouTube’s side. Review logs and monitor process status, CPU and memory pressure, network loss, and disk capacity if recording locally.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

Start with an unlisted or test broadcast, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends checking stream health and the watch page.

Verify picture, audio, playback on the watch page, and the intended visibility or scheduling before treating the stream as live for its audience.

Watch encoder logs and VPS resource use. Check whether the process is still running and whether output errors, dropped network connectivity, or input failures appear.

Test recovery deliberately before depending on it: confirm how the supervisor behaves after FFmpeg exits and how the encoder responds to a brief output interruption. Make changes using a test stream, not a production stream key exposed in a command or log.
Plan around YouTube archives and long sessions
YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive. Check current handling in YouTube Studio and decide whether to divide a continuous program into sessions or record separate copies if a complete local archive matters. Local recording also requires disk-space monitoring and a plan for rotation or transfer.

YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the server URL and stream key match the selected Live Control Room stream, that the key was not reset, and that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.

Stream health is poor or playback buffers: Compare sustained VPS outbound capacity with the configured bitrate plus headroom. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the route cannot sustain the target, and account for other server traffic.

FFmpeg stops after a connection interruption: Inspect the error log, check whether the installed build supports the reconnect options used, and verify the supervisor’s restart policy. Reconnect and restart behavior cannot restore an unavailable VPS or input source.

High CPU use or unstable transcoding: Confirm that the VPS has enough compute for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. If the source already matches the required output, test stream-copy; otherwise lower the encoding workload or use a server with adequate compute.

Video works but audio is missing or incompatible: Check the input audio stream and output codec settings, then verify audio in Live Control Room and on the watch page. YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio.

The broadcast ends but no complete archive appears: YouTube’s cited guidance covers automatic archives for streams under 12 hours. Confirm current Studio behavior for longer sessions and use separate recordings if a complete copy is important.

Cost and operational trade-offs
A VPS route means choosing and paying for server capacity, sustained outbound bandwidth, and compute resources appropriate to the encoder workload; actual provider limits and prices vary by plan and location. You also own the setup, monitoring, logs, restart policy, and recovery testing. It is a useful fit when you need control over the server and encoder or have a live input that must be processed there. For a prerecorded loop, compare that operational work with a cloud looping service before choosing.
