To make that work reliably, keep every node stateless: store sessions, cache, and queues in shared Redis; store uploads in shared object storage; place a connection pooler such as PgBouncer in front of PostgreSQL; and run queue workers separately. Add PostgreSQL streaming replicas only when read traffic requires them, then route reads deliberately and keep consistency-sensitive reads on the primary.

What horizontal scaling changes in a Laravel deployment
A single VPS can run Laravel, queue workers, and PostgreSQL together, but that arrangement ties capacity and failure to one machine. Horizontal scaling adds more application nodes instead of making one server larger. A load balancer sends HTTP requests to those nodes, while PostgreSQL remains a shared data service and queue workers run in a separate tier.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe design succeeds only when an application node can be discarded and replaced without losing user state. A request may reach node A and the next request may reach node B. If either node contains the only copy of a session, cache entry, queued job, or uploaded file, users will see intermittent failures.
| Layer | Scaled design | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP application | Two or more identical Laravel nodes behind a load balancer | Spreads requests and allows one node to be drained or replaced |
| Sessions, cache, queues | One shared Redis service reachable by all relevant nodes | Prevents node-local state from breaking a request routed elsewhere |
| Uploads | Shared object storage rather than a node’s local disk | Every application node can read the same files |
| Database connections | PgBouncer or another PostgreSQL connection pooler | Controls connection pressure as application and worker counts grow |
| Background jobs | Dedicated worker nodes running Horizon against shared Redis | Keeps queue spikes from consuming web capacity |
| Database reads | Primary plus streaming replicas, with explicit Laravel read/write routing | Scales read throughput when the primary is the bottleneck |
Scaling the web tier does not automatically make a slow SQL statement faster. Replicas distribute read load; they do not reduce the execution time of one poorly performing query. Likewise, adding servers before removing node-local state merely creates several copies of the same failure.

When to add servers—and when not to
Horizontal scaling introduces a load balancer, shared Redis, object storage, a connection pooler, worker management, and replication operations. A team unfamiliar with these components may incur more operational overhead than benefit until traffic or reliability requirements justify it.
Signals that more application nodes are appropriate
- HTTP capacity is exhausted while database capacity remains available.
- Deployments or maintenance require taking the only web node offline.
- Queue processing competes with web requests for CPU or memory.
- You need to drain or replace a VPS without interrupting all traffic.
Signals that replicas are not yet the answer
- A single query is slow: a replica will execute that query just as slowly.
- The primary is limited by connection count: add pooling before adding replicas.
- Reads must always reflect the latest write: route those reads to the primary.
- The main problem is local file or session state: make state shared first.
There is no verified universal storage or traffic threshold at which replicas become mandatory. A 500 GB threshold sometimes quoted in deployment advice is not an established industry statistic and should not be used as a rule.

Build the shared-state foundation first
1. Put sessions, cache, and queues in shared Redis
Configure every Laravel application node to use the same Redis backend for sessions, cache, and queue data. A request handled by one node must be able to read a session written by another. The same principle applies to cache keys and queued jobs.
- Provision a Redis service that is reachable from all application and worker nodes.
- Point the Laravel session store on every node at that shared Redis instance.
- Use the same cache and queue backend for every node; do not leave one node using a local filesystem or an isolated Redis instance.
- Deploy identical configuration to all nodes and verify that a session created through one node is available when the load balancer sends the next request to another.
- Verify queue visibility from a worker node before accepting production traffic.
Redis is a shared dependency, so protect it as carefully as the database. Monitor reachability and capacity, and document what happens to sessions, cache entries, and queued work if Redis is unavailable. The key scaling property is common visibility, not the number of Redis servers.

2. Move uploads off node-local disks
Files written to storage or another local path on one VPS are invisible to the other VPS unless they are copied or mounted through a shared service. Horizontal scaling therefore requires shared object storage for user uploads and other persistent files.
- Choose an object-storage service accessible from every application node.
- Configure Laravel’s upload filesystem consistently on all nodes.
- Migrate existing files before switching production traffic, preserving the paths or keys that the application expects.
- Test an upload through one node and a download through a different node.
- Remove assumptions in deployment scripts that a file exists only on the machine that created it.
Do not treat a shared filesystem mount as equivalent to object storage without validating its failure and performance characteristics. The requirement is that every node can access the same authoritative files.
Add PostgreSQL connection pooling before read replicas
Each Laravel process and each queue worker can open database connections. Adding web nodes and workers multiplies that demand. Place a connection pooler such as PgBouncer in front of PostgreSQL before introducing replicas. Applications connect to the pooler, and the pooler manages the available PostgreSQL connections instead of allowing every process to create an uncontrolled direct connection.
Pooler rollout
- Run the pooler where all application and worker nodes can reach it with low latency.
- Configure Laravel’s PostgreSQL connection to use the pooler’s endpoint rather than the database server’s direct endpoint.
- Move queue workers to the same controlled path; workers can create substantial connection demand during bursts.
- Observe active client connections, backend PostgreSQL connections, query latency, and rejected connections while traffic is representative.
- Only after pooling is stable, evaluate whether read traffic still saturates the primary.
Pooling addresses connection pressure. It does not repair an inefficient query, increase the execution speed of one statement, or remove the need to size PostgreSQL appropriately.

Run stateless Laravel nodes behind a load balancer
Once shared state, shared files, and pooled database access are in place, clone the application tier. Every node should run the same Laravel release, PHP runtime, extensions, environment settings, and queue-related configuration.
Application-node requirements
- Code and configuration are deployed identically.
- Sessions and cache use the shared Redis backend.
- Uploads use shared object storage.
- Database access goes through the approved PostgreSQL endpoint, normally the pooler.
- Local disk is treated as temporary build or runtime space, not durable application state.
Load-balancer behavior
The load balancer should send requests only to healthy nodes and allow a node to be drained before maintenance. The exact HAProxy or Nginx configuration depends on the VPS network, TLS termination, health-check endpoint, and operating system; those details must be designed for your environment rather than copied as a universal recipe.
Because sessions are shared, sticky load-balancer sessions are not required to preserve login state. If you enable stickiness for another reason, it should be a measured operational choice, not a substitute for shared Redis.
Safe deployment sequence
- Build and test the new Laravel release on an isolated node.
- Start that node with the shared Redis, object storage, and pooler settings.
- Send a small portion of traffic to it and verify login, cache access, uploads, database writes, and queue dispatch.
- Drain the old node only after the replacement passes health checks and application checks.
- Repeat until every node runs the same release.
Separate queue workers from web traffic with Horizon
Queue workers should be a separate capacity pool. If a burst of jobs consumes all CPU on an application node, HTTP requests become slow even when the web workload itself is modest. Dedicated worker VPSs let you scale background processing independently.
One shared Horizon backend
Each worker server can run Horizon against the same Redis backend. Redis provides the shared queue state that prevents the same queued job from being processed twice by ordinary competing workers. Keep Horizon configuration consistent enough that all workers understand the same queue names and job contracts.

Dynamic worker counts
Horizon can adjust worker counts for a queue between configured minimum and maximum values based on queue wait times. This differs from running fixed queue:work commands with a permanently static process count. Set bounds that fit the CPU, memory, and database capacity of the worker VPSs; a larger maximum is not automatically better.

- Provision one or more worker nodes with the Laravel release used by the web tier.
- Connect Horizon to the shared Redis service.
- Define queue priorities and minimum and maximum worker counts for each workload.
- Generate representative queue load and watch wait time, job duration, memory use, and database connections.
- Add worker nodes or raise limits only when the downstream services can absorb the extra concurrency.
Scaling workers increases job concurrency, not necessarily total throughput. Jobs that spend most of their time waiting on PostgreSQL still compete for database capacity, which is another reason to establish pooling and observe connection usage first.
Add PostgreSQL streaming replicas for read scaling
After pooling and web-tier scaling are stable, add a streaming replica when read traffic—not writes or a single slow query—is the limiting factor. PostgreSQL streaming replication continuously sends changes from the primary to one or more replicas. A replica can serve read traffic while the primary handles writes.
What replicas can and cannot do
- They spread eligible read work across more database servers.
- They do not make one expensive query execute faster.
- They introduce replication lag, so a replica may not yet contain the latest commit.
- They do not remove the need to monitor the primary, pooler, network, and storage.
Route traffic deliberately
A database proxy such as HAProxy or Pgpool-II can direct read connections to replicas and write connections to the primary. The proxy must expose a clear primary endpoint and read endpoint, and your Laravel configuration must use them consistently. Exact proxy health checks and failover rules depend on the topology and are not interchangeable between installations.
Best Value
Configure Laravel read/write connections and sticky reads
Laravel supports separate read and write host arrays in config/database.php. The read array contains replica hosts (or a read-proxy endpoint), while the write array points to the primary. Enable the optional sticky setting when a request must see its own writes.
'pgsql' => [
'driver' => 'pgsql',
'read' => [
'host' => [/* replica or read-proxy hosts */],
],
'write' => [
'host' => [/* primary or write-proxy host */],
],
'sticky' => true,
// credentials, port, database and other connection settings
],
With sticky enabled, once Laravel performs a write during a request, subsequent reads in that same request use the write connection. This avoids the common sequence in which a user submits a change and immediately receives stale data from a lagging replica.
Classify reads before sending them to replicas
- Send reads that must reflect a just-completed write to the primary, either by relying on sticky behavior within the request or by explicitly using the write connection.
- Send genuinely replica-safe reporting or browsing reads to the read connection.
- Keep transactions and consistency-sensitive workflows on the primary unless their behavior under lag is explicitly acceptable.
- Measure replica lag and define what the application should do when lag exceeds your tolerated window.
Sticky routing is request-scoped. It does not guarantee that a later HTTP request, a separate worker, or another process will read from the primary. For those cases, the application must deliberately choose the primary when freshness matters.
Plan for lag, failures, and recovery
Replication lag
Lag is the central trade-off of read replicas. A successful write on the primary can be invisible on a replica for a period of time. Route current reads to the primary, and make the stale-read behavior of noncritical pages explicit rather than accidental.
Primary failure
Read routing and failover are separate concerns. A proxy can send writes to the primary and reads to replicas, but a replacement primary still needs an authoritative promotion process, connection endpoint changes, and application verification. Patroni is often suggested for PostgreSQL failover orchestration, but its suitability and configuration depend on the deployment and should be validated independently rather than assumed.
Node and dependency failures
- If one application node fails, remove it from the load balancer and keep serving through the remaining nodes.
- If a worker node fails, Horizon should continue processing through other workers connected to shared Redis.
- If Redis fails, sessions, cache, and queues are affected together; document this as a critical dependency.
- If object storage is unavailable, uploads and file retrieval fail even when the Laravel nodes are healthy.
- If a replica fails or falls behind, stop routing eligible reads to it and keep write and freshness-sensitive traffic on the primary.
A practical rollout order for VPS servers
Use this sequence to avoid adding a new failure mode before the preceding dependency is ready.
- Inventory state. Identify every session, cache, queue, and file path that currently lives on a VPS.
- Centralize Redis-backed state. Point all Laravel nodes and Horizon workers at one shared Redis service and verify cross-node visibility.
- Centralize files. Move uploads to shared object storage and test writes and reads from different nodes.
- Install pooling. Put PgBouncer in front of PostgreSQL and move web and worker connections through it.
- Clone the web tier. Add identical Laravel nodes behind a health-checking load balancer.
- Split workers. Run Horizon on dedicated worker nodes using the shared Redis backend.
- Measure the database. Confirm whether read load, connection pressure, writes, or individual query latency is the actual bottleneck.
- Add replicas only for read demand. Set up streaming replication, route reads through a deliberate read endpoint, and retain primary routing for fresh data.
- Exercise failures. Drain an app node, stop a worker, make a replica unavailable, and verify that monitoring and routing behave as designed.
Decision table: which scaling action fits the symptom?
| Observed symptom | First action | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Users lose sessions when requests land on another VPS | Move sessions to shared Redis | That load-balancer stickiness fixes the architecture |
| Uploaded files exist on one node only | Move uploads to shared object storage | More Laravel nodes will replicate local files |
| PostgreSQL rejects or struggles with connection volume | Add PgBouncer and observe connection usage | A read replica alone will solve connection exhaustion |
| Queue backlog slows web requests | Run Horizon on separate worker nodes and tune bounds | Adding web nodes automatically increases job throughput |
| Read traffic saturates the primary | Add streaming replicas and route eligible reads | Replicas accelerate one slow query |
| Users see stale data after a write | Use primary routing and Laravel sticky reads where appropriate | Every replica read is immediately current |
Pre-production verification checklist
- Two application nodes can serve the same authenticated session.
- A cache value written through one node is available through another.
- A queued job dispatched by any app node appears to Horizon.
- An upload created through one node can be retrieved through another.
- All web and worker database connections use the pooler endpoint.
- Removing one app node from the load balancer does not end active service.
- Horizon workers on multiple servers share queues without duplicate processing.
- Laravel’s write host is the PostgreSQL primary and its read hosts are intentional replicas or a read proxy.
- Sticky reads are enabled for workflows that read immediately after writing.
- Replica lag is visible, and lagging replicas can be removed from read routing.
- Runbooks identify what to do when Redis, object storage, the pooler, the primary, or a replica is unavailable.
Limits of this architecture
Horizontal scaling distributes work; it does not eliminate bottlenecks. A write-heavy workload remains constrained by the PostgreSQL primary. A query that scans too much data remains slow on every replica. Redis, object storage, the load balancer, and the pooler become shared dependencies that require monitoring and recovery plans. The architecture is worthwhile when independent web, worker, and read capacity—or the ability to replace a VPS without taking the service down—outweighs that operational complexity.
