Yahoo Mail doesn’t provide a full in-message highlighter tool in the message reader, but you still have several reliable ways to make text stand out.
This guide covers the practical options that work in 2024—desktop browser, iPhone and iPad, and Android—including exact steps, what to do when selection fails, and workarounds when you need a true visible highlight.

What Yahoo Mail Can and Can’t Do (2024)
Yahoo Mail’s message viewer is built for reading and quoting, not for inline annotations. That means there’s usually no “marker” tool that paints over the email text like an app that edits PDFs.
What does work depends on your goal:
- Select-and-copy to reuse the text elsewhere (including quoting in a reply).
- Find/Search (browser or app search) that visually highlights matching words in the message.
- Workarounds for actual visual highlighting: copy into Notes/Docs, or screenshot + markup.
Prerequisites Before You Start
Before you try to highlight, confirm these basics:
- You’re signed into Yahoo Mail and the message is fully loaded (avoid half-rendered pages).
- Your browser/app supports text selection (some embedded content, images, and certain tracking views can limit selection).
- For Find-based highlighting, you need the message content rendered as selectable text, not only as an image.
Method 1: Highlight by Selecting Text (Copy/Quote)
If you want to “highlight” for your own use, the most direct method is selecting text. Yahoo Mail doesn’t paint highlights, but selection gives you the exact portion you need to copy or reuse.
#1 Best Overall
- BUY A BIC AND WE’LL GIVE A BIC: This back to school season, when you purchase BIC highlighters, we will donate one to teachers and classrooms in need
- BACK TO SCHOOL ESSENTIAL: One 5-count pack of BIC Brite Liner Highlighters in assorted fluorescent colors, sized right for a student's backpack, pencil case, or a teacher's classroom supply drawer
- BUILT FOR STUDENTS: Chisel tip highlights broad lines across textbook passages or fine-underlines key terms in notes, making it the right tool for studying, test prep, and everyday class work
- TRANSLUCENT INK THAT STAYS OUT OF THE WAY: Ink emphasizes what matters on the page without covering the text below, so students can highlight and still read every word they marked
- LONG-LASTING INK: Each highlighter writes up to eight hours without drying out, even with the cap left off, so a 5-pack carries students from the first day of school through the end of the semester
Typical uses:
- Copying a phone number, invoice ID, or address.
- Quoting key lines in a reply.
- Moving text into a notes app so you can apply a real highlight color.
Method 2: Highlight Matches with Find in Message
When you need to quickly spot all occurrences of a word or phrase, use Find. This gives you a visual highlight of matches while keeping you inside the email.
How it works in 2024:
- Desktop web: use your browser’s built-in
Find(Ctrl+F / Cmd+F). - Mobile apps: use the app’s search option if available, or use text selection + search in your keyboard/app tooling.
Method 3: Highlight for Readers Using Copy Into Another App
If you want a true, persistent highlight (yellow/colored marker style), copy the text into an app that supports highlighting. This is the most dependable workaround when you’re preparing information for later review or sharing.
Common choices:
- Apple Notes on iPhone/iPad
- Microsoft Word or Google Docs on mobile/desktop
- PDF/annotation tools if you convert the content
Method 4: Highlight via Screenshot Markup (Quick Visuals)
When the email is text you can’t select (or it loads as an image), screenshot + markup is often faster than trying to fight the viewer. Most iPhone/iPad and Android devices can mark up screenshots with a highlighter tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Web: Step-by-Step for Yahoo Mail on Desktop
Use this when you’re on a laptop/desktop in a standard web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).
Select and copy text (no visual highlighter, but precise selection)
- Open Yahoo Mail in your browser and open the message.
- Click and drag to select the text you want to “highlight.”
- Use the context options (Copy, if shown) or right-click to copy the selection.
- Paste into a document or notes app, then apply a real highlight color.
Highlight matching text with Find (Ctrl+F / Cmd+F)
- Open the message in Yahoo Mail.
- Press Ctrl + F (Windows/Chromebook) or Cmd + F (macOS).
- Type the word or phrase you want.
- Use the up/down arrows in the Find box to jump between results.
- Look for browser-highlighted matches inside the email content.
If Find doesn’t show highlights, the message may render as non-text content (for example, an image-based email). In that case, use screenshot markup or copy via another method.

Quote the highlighted part in a reply
- Select the relevant text in the message.
- Choose Reply or Reply all.
- Paste the selected text into your reply, or use copy/paste to include the exact snippet.
- Optionally format it in your reply (bold, or prefix with a short label) so it stands out.

- Open Yahoo Mail and open the target message.
- Touch and hold the text you want to use.
- Adjust the blue selection handles until the correct phrase is selected.
- Tap Copy (or the copy option in the menu).
- Paste into Notes, then use the highlight tool there.
If you don’t see a “Copy” option, the content may be in a format that isn’t selectable. Switch to screenshot markup or try Find (if the app offers it).
Use iOS-level Find alternatives (when supported)
Some Yahoo Mail views include search within the message. If you see a search field/icon while reading, use it to locate the phrase—the app should then highlight matches in the displayed content.
If there’s no in-message search UI, use selection + paste into Notes and then search within the Notes document to visually scan.
Highlight using screenshot + Markup
- Open the email and navigate to the exact text you need.
- Take a screenshot: press the Side button + Volume Up (or follow your iPhone model’s method).
- Open the screenshot preview and tap Markup.
- Select the Highlighter tool and drag over the text.
- Save the marked screenshot to Photos or Files.

Troubleshooting When Highlighting Doesn’t Work
When selection or Find highlights fail, the cause is usually content type, permissions, or a rendering issue. Try these fixes in order.
Nothing can be selected
- Try a different browser on desktop. For example, switch from Chrome to Edge or Firefox to test rendering differences.
- Refresh the page (desktop) or restart the Yahoo Mail app (mobile).
- Zoom level check: reset zoom to 100% on desktop; extreme zoom can break selection coordinates.
Ctrl+F doesn’t show matches
- Confirm the text is present. Some emails load the body after the initial view; wait a few seconds for the message to fully render.
- Try searching shorter phrases. HTML email templates can split words across spans, so searching a full sentence may fail while searching a keyword works.
- Check if the email is image-based. If you can’t select the text normally, Find won’t work reliably either.
Select works, but Copy doesn’t
- On desktop, right-click the selection and choose Copy if Yahoo’s context menu doesn’t show.
- On iPhone/iPad, ensure you select until the blue handles fully cover the text, then reopen the selection menu.
- If copying into Notes fails, try pasting into a simpler target first (like a blank text field or another notes app).
Mobile app selection is inconsistent
- Update the Yahoo Mail app in your app store.
- Disable any aggressive “reading mode” or accessibility overlays that might interfere with selection.
- Switch to desktop web for the same message when accuracy matters.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting inline highlighting like a PDF highlighter. Yahoo Mail message view typically doesn’t support it.
- Highlighting content you can’t copy. If selection doesn’t work, switch to screenshot markup early.
- Searching the wrong layer. HTML email can hide or split text; search for keywords instead of full sentences.
- Forgetting formatting. When you copy/paste, emails may carry extra spaces or line breaks—clean it in Notes/Docs if readability matters.
Alternatives to Highlighting Inside the Email
If your goal is “make it stand out later,” you may not need actual yellow highlighting.
Star, label, or move the message
Use Yahoo Mail’s organization tools (like Star or folders/labels) so the message itself becomes easy to find. This helps when you’re highlighting for follow-up rather than for shared annotation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

When you respond, include a short quote of the exact text you want the recipient to notice. It’s a clean, message-native way to draw attention without relying on visual highlights.
Convert content to a document you can annotate
For long emails, copy the body into a document editor (Word/Google Docs) and use the built-in highlight feature. This gives you persistent, editable markup.
FAQ: Highlighting Text in Yahoo Mail Messages
Can I highlight text directly inside Yahoo Mail messages?

What if the email text is not selectable?
Try screenshot + Markup (iPhone/iPad or Android) to visually highlight the area. If the sender uses an image-based template, selection and Find may not work.
Will copying and highlighting in Notes keep the formatting?
Not perfectly. Email formatting often converts into plain text with inconsistent spacing. You can usually re-format lightly in Notes after pasting.
Why does Find highlight only part of the text?
HTML email layouts can split words across elements, or the email can load content asynchronously. Searching for a shorter keyword and waiting for the full render fixes most cases.
Bottom Line
In 2024, the most reliable way to “highlight text” in Yahoo Mail is to use selection (for copy/quote) or Find (for on-screen match highlighting). If you need true visual marker-style highlights, copy into Notes/Docs or use screenshot markup.
Pick the method that matches your end goal: precision (select), speed (Find), or persistent visuals (Notes highlighting or screenshot highlighter).
