To hide browsing history, first decide whether you want to stop a browser saving a future session or remove history that already exists. Private or Incognito mode mainly limits local records after you close the private windows; it does not hide activity from websites, your internet provider, or a managed school or work network. To remove existing traces, clear the relevant browser history and separately review account activity and sync.
Choose the right kind of cleanup
Browser history, account activity, and records held by websites or networks are separate. Clearing one does not automatically erase the others.

Use private browsing to limit future local history
Open the browser’s private mode before browsing, then close every private window when finished. The cleanup behavior described by each browser applies when the session ends. Private mode is not a way to erase an earlier session.

- Open Chrome’s menu and choose New Incognito window. Shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, or Command+Shift+N on Mac. See Google Chrome Help: Browse in Incognito mode.
- Close every Incognito window to end the session. Chrome says it then removes its record of visited sites and session site data.
Bookmarks you create and files you download remain on the device. Websites and organizations managing the network may still see activity.

Safari on iPhone
Use Safari’s tab controls to switch the tab group to Private Browsing. Apple says private tabs do not appear in iPhone History or in the tab list on other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. On supported devices, private browsing can require a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID to unlock. Apple’s current instructions are for iOS 27; menu labels and behavior may differ on earlier versions. Microsoft Edge
Choose Settings and more > New InPrivate window, then close all InPrivate windows when finished. Microsoft says Edge clears session browsing and download history, cookies, site data, cache, passwords, autofill data, and specified permissions. Favorites and downloaded files remain. Clearing download history does not delete the downloaded file. Extensions allowed to run in InPrivate may still save history, and a school, workplace, or ISP may still observe activity. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 11; do not assume the same menu path on every Edge mobile version. See Microsoft Support: InPrivate browsing in Microsoft Edge.

Firefox
Open a Private Browsing window and close the last private window when you are done. Mozilla says Firefox then removes browsing history and tracking cookies. New bookmarks remain. The reviewed Mozilla guidance explains behavior but not a complete platform-specific menu path, so consult Mozilla Support: Private Browsing if your device’s controls differ.

Delete history already saved in a browser
Choose the time period and data types you actually want to remove. Cookies and other site data can sign you out or remove saved preferences and site-stored information; clearing them is not required just to delete the history list.

Chrome on Android
- Open Chrome’s menu and select Delete browsing data.
- Choose a time range, select Browsing history, and tap Delete data.
If history sync is active, Google says deleting Chrome browsing history also deletes it from signed-in devices where that sync is active. This does not delete account-side Google searches or service activity. See Google Chrome Help: Delete browsing data.
Chrome on iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome’s More menu and select Delete Browsing Data.
- Choose the duration and specific data types, confirm, then select Delete Browsing Data.
Searches and activity on Google services are saved to the Google Account and are distinct from Chrome’s browser history. See Google Chrome Help: Delete browsing data.

Other browsers and devices
History-clearing labels and sync behavior vary by browser version, operating system, and account setup. Use the matching official support page for your installed version rather than assuming that a menu path for another device applies.

Remove account activity and check sync separately
Google Account activity
Go to myactivity.google.com or open the Google Account’s Data & privacy > History settings. There you can delete activity manually or set auto-delete for Web & App Activity and related account controls. Google Safety Center lists auto-delete choices of 3, 18, or 36 months and says 18 months is the default for new accounts; these are account settings, not browser-history retention periods. Deleting activity in My Activity does not necessarily clear browser history stored on the device. Google also provides separate controls for Search history and Web & App Activity, so review the relevant setting for the activity you mean to remove. See Google Account Help: Manage or delete your activity.
Chrome history sync
Chrome history may appear across signed-in devices when history sync is enabled. Google says deleting Chrome history removes it from devices signed in with history sync active. That deletion does not erase website server logs or records held by network operators. See Google Chrome Help: Delete browsing data.
Microsoft Edge profile data
Removing a local Edge profile deletes profile data stored on that device, but information previously synced may remain in Microsoft’s cloud and require separate removal through Microsoft privacy controls. See Microsoft Support: Delete a profile in Microsoft Edge.

- Activity from websites: Private mode does not stop visited websites and services from receiving requests or collecting data about a signed-in user.
- Network activity: Google says schools, employers, and ISPs may observe Incognito activity. Mozilla says Firefox Private Browsing does not prevent an ISP from logging activity or sites from seeing location.
- Saved files and items: Downloads, bookmarks or favorites, and some extension or account activity can outlast a private session.
- Malware: Private browsing is not a malware or virus shield and does not make malicious sites safe.
- Account or third-party records: Clearing a browser does not by itself delete account activity or logs already held by websites and network operators.
When a VPN is relevant—and when it is not
A VPN is a separate consideration if your concern is what an ISP or local network can observe. Mozilla identifies a trustworthy VPN as an option for ISP privacy, but that does not make it a history-deletion tool: it will not clear browser records or account activity. A VPN also changes which provider you must trust.
