To hide a backend server’s IP address behind NGINX, make NGINX the only publicly reachable endpoint, proxy requests to a private upstream, and block every direct route to the origin. The proxy_pass directive performs the forwarding, but it does not provide secrecy by itself: anyone who can still connect to the backend address can bypass NGINX.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
A secure deployment therefore combines proxy configuration, firewall or security-group rules, deliberate header handling, and checks for information leaks such as old DNS records and error pages. The examples below show how to build that arrangement and how to verify that clients cannot reach the origin directly.

In a reverse-proxy design, a browser or API client connects to the public NGINX listener. NGINX accepts the request, opens a separate connection to an upstream application, receives the response, and returns that response to the client. The client normally sees the proxy’s address, not the upstream address.
That separation is effective only when the upstream has no usable public route. If the application still listens on a public interface and its port is allowed through a firewall, a client can skip NGINX and connect to the origin directly. Finding an origin address through an old DNS record, a leaked certificate, a diagnostic page, or an application-generated URL then becomes enough to bypass proxy controls.

“Hidden” should therefore be read as not directly reachable through the intended public network path, rather than as an IP address that can never be discovered. Treat a previously exposed address as compromised: restrict it, rotate it when appropriate, and remove the sources that disclose it.
Choose an upstream layout
NGINX can proxy to a process on the same machine, to another host on a private network, or to an upstream group. The right layout determines which firewall rules and encryption controls you need.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Layout | Example upstream | Origin exposure | Important controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same host, loopback | 127.0.0.1:8000 or [::1]:8000 |
No network route from other machines when the application binds only to loopback | Bind the application to loopback; do not publish port 8000; use local process permissions and host firewall rules |
| Private network | 10.20.0.15:8000 or a private DNS name |
No public route, provided cloud security groups and network ACLs enforce it | Allow the application port only from NGINX’s private address or security group; consider authenticated TLS between hosts |
| Separate origin or upstream group | An upstream block containing several private servers |
Each origin must be isolated; adding a server does not make it private automatically | Consistent headers, health checks, logging, firewall policy, and scaling procedures across every member |
| Unix socket | unix:/run/example/app.sock |
No TCP listener to scan | Set socket ownership and permissions so only NGINX can connect; monitor socket availability |
Loopback is the smallest attack surface when the application and NGINX share a host. A private-network or separate-origin design is more suitable when the application needs independent scaling, but it adds routing, access-control, and transport-encryption responsibilities.
Configure the public NGINX endpoint
The public server should listen on the address and ports intended for clients, terminate TLS when NGINX is the TLS edge, and proxy only the paths that the application should serve.
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name api.example.com;
# ssl_certificate and ssl_certificate_key belong here.
location / {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000;
}
}
In this example, a request for https://api.example.com/orders is sent to the local application on port 8000. NGINX returns the upstream response to the caller; the caller does not receive a redirect to 127.0.0.1 or to the origin host.
Understand proxy_pass path behavior
The URI portion of proxy_pass controls how NGINX maps the matching location. With location /api/ { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000; }, NGINX passes the original request URI, including /api/. With proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000/; inside that location, the matching /api/ prefix is replaced by /. A mismatch can produce 404 responses, broken asset paths, or incorrect redirects, so decide the desired upstream path explicitly and test both root and nested URLs.

Preserve the public host name
proxy_set_header Host $host; sends the public host name to the application. This matters when the application selects a virtual host, builds absolute URLs, validates allowed hosts, or creates redirect locations. If the upstream must receive a different host, set that value deliberately instead of allowing an accidental internal name to leak into responses.
Control connection and forwarding headers
NGINX changes some proxy headers by default. Set the headers your application actually consumes, and remove a header by assigning it an empty value when forwarding it would be unsafe or misleading. Do not blindly copy arbitrary client-supplied forwarding headers into a trusted context; a user can send headers such as X-Forwarded-For unless the proxy overwrites or sanitizes them.
X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for appends the address NGINX sees to an existing chain. This is useful when there is a known, trusted proxy in front of NGINX. If clients can reach NGINX directly, the leftmost values in a chain may be untrusted input. Configure the application to accept the client address only from the proxy path you control.
Make the origin unreachable from the Internet
Apply network isolation before relying on the proxy configuration. The exact syntax depends on your operating system and provider, but the policy is consistent:

- Allow the backend application port only from NGINX’s loopback address, private address, or trusted proxy security group.
- Deny the backend port from the public Internet and from untrusted internal networks.
- Remove public interfaces from the application where the software supports binding to a specific address.
- After migration, close the old origin address or restrict it before publishing the new proxy endpoint.
For a same-host deployment, binding the application to 127.0.0.1:8000 prevents remote connections even before a firewall rule is evaluated. For a separate origin, use a host firewall, cloud security group, or network ACL that names NGINX’s source address or security group as the only permitted client.
Example firewall policy
A generic policy can be expressed as:
allow tcp/443 from 0.0.0.0/0 to nginx-host
allow tcp/80 from 0.0.0.0/0 to nginx-host # only when required
allow tcp/8000 from nginx-private-address to origin
deny tcp/8000 from 0.0.0.0/0 to origin
Translate that policy into your platform’s firewall syntax rather than copying these lines as a command. Include IPv6 rules as well as IPv4 rules; leaving an IPv6 listener open is a common way to defeat an otherwise correct IPv4 restriction.

Protect NGINX-to-backend traffic
Traffic from NGINX to a loopback process stays on the host. Traffic crossing a private network may still traverse shared infrastructure, so decide whether it needs HTTPS or another authenticated private transport. Use an upstream HTTPS URL when the application requires encryption and peer authentication.
upstream app_pool {
server 10.20.0.15:8443;
server 10.20.0.16:8443;
}
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name api.example.com;
location / {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass https://app_pool;
}
}
When using HTTPS upstreams, configure certificate verification and the expected server name according to your certificate authority and application. Encryption without verification can protect confidentiality while still permitting a man-in-the-middle to impersonate the origin.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Select the source address with proxy_bind
A proxy host with multiple interfaces may need a specific source address for routing or firewall policy. proxy_bind selects the local address NGINX uses for upstream connections. The selected address must exist on the host, have a route to the upstream, and be allowed by the origin firewall.
Pass the real client IP without trusting forged values
There are two separate jobs: forwarding an address in HTTP headers and replacing NGINX’s own idea of the client address. The first is done with X-Real-IP or X-Forwarded-For. The second uses the real-IP module and must have an explicit trust boundary.
When another proxy is in front of NGINX
List only the exact addresses or CIDR ranges of the proxy or load balancer that is allowed to provide a replacement address:
set_real_ip_from 192.0.2.0/24;
set_real_ip_from 2001:db8:1234::/48;
real_ip_header X-Forwarded-For;
# Enable recursive processing only when every proxy in the chain is trusted.
real_ip_recursive on;
Replace the documentation ranges above with the actual provider ranges for your deployment. Do not trust the entire Internet, a broad private range, or any address merely because it is “internal.” The trusted address is the sender known to insert a correct replacement value. With recursive processing enabled, NGINX walks the header chain to find the last non-trusted address; an incorrect trust list can let a client forge its apparent address.

After real-IP processing, $remote_addr represents the selected client address, so access logs, rate limits, and the X-Real-IP header may change. Review those effects before enabling rules that block or allow individual addresses.
When a load balancer uses PROXY protocol
PROXY protocol is a transport-level feature, not an HTTP header. If the component in front of NGINX sends it, the NGINX listener must be configured to expect it; if it does not, enabling it causes ordinary clients to fail. Conversely, accepting PROXY protocol from an untrusted network lets a client claim an arbitrary source address.
server {
listen 443 ssl proxy_protocol;
server_name api.example.com;
set_real_ip_from 192.0.2.10/32;
real_ip_header proxy_protocol;
location / {
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000;
}
}
The listener, upstream load balancer, and trust rules must agree on the protocol. A mismatch commonly appears as malformed HTTP requests, handshake failures, or logs showing the load balancer instead of the originating client.
Prevent common origin-disclosure paths
Blocking the port is the primary control, but review every place an address can escape:
- DNS history: remove obsolete A and AAAA records and check delegated subdomains. Assume old values remain discoverable even after DNS changes.
- TLS certificates: certificate transparency records can reveal host names. Do not reuse an origin-only name as a public-facing name if that name itself exposes infrastructure details.
- Application responses: inspect redirects, absolute links, API metadata, WebSocket endpoints, error pages, and debug output for internal host names or addresses.
- Mail and service records: MX, SRV, monitoring, telemetry, and callback URLs can point to the same host. Separate those services or protect their records.
- Management interfaces: administration ports, health dashboards, and SSH must have their own restricted access policy; they should not share a public origin address merely for convenience.
- Origin authentication: where practical, require a private network path, mutual TLS, an access token, or another control that makes an unsolicited connection useless even if the address becomes known.
If an origin was publicly reachable, rotate credentials and review logs for direct traffic. Moving the DNS name behind NGINX without changing the old firewall rule does not undo prior exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use NGINX access controls as a second layer
NGINX can allow or deny client addresses and ranges, including in proxied TCP configurations. This is useful for administrative paths, partner APIs, or emergency restrictions, but it is not a substitute for network isolation. An attacker who bypasses NGINX never encounters an NGINX allow/deny rule.
Best Value
location /admin/ {
allow 198.51.100.24;
deny all;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000;
}
Apply such rules only after real-IP handling is correct. Otherwise NGINX may evaluate the address of a trusted load balancer rather than the user, or it may evaluate a forged header if the trust boundary is too broad.
Validate that clients cannot bypass the proxy
- Check listeners on the origin. Confirm the application binds only to loopback or the intended private address. A listening socket on
0.0.0.0:8000or[::]:8000is a warning when the host is meant to be private. - Test from an external network. Attempt the origin’s public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses on the application port. The expected result is a timeout or firewall rejection, not an application response.
- Test the public name. Request the same path through
https://api.example.comand confirm the application responds normally, the host is correct, and redirects stay on the public name. - Inspect headers and logs. Verify that the backend sees the intended
Host, protocol, and client-IP values. Confirm that direct-origin attempts do not appear as normal application traffic. - Check failure behavior. Stop one upstream or block its private route temporarily. NGINX should return a controlled gateway error, while health checks and alerts identify the failed member without exposing its address to clients.
- Repeat after changes. Re-test after adding IPv6, a second upstream, a new load balancer, or a firewall rule. Security groups and routing tables often diverge during scaling.
Troubleshoot symptoms by layer
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| 502 Bad Gateway | Application is stopped, wrong port, blocked private route, or failed Unix-socket permissions | NGINX error log, upstream listener, route, security group, and socket ownership |
| 404 or doubled path segments | proxy_pass URI mapping does not match the location |
Whether the directive ends with a slash and what URI the application expects |
| Redirect points to an internal host | Upstream received the wrong Host or protocol |
Host, X-Forwarded-Proto, application trusted-proxy settings, and external URL configuration |
| Every request appears to come from NGINX | Forwarded headers are absent, overwritten, or not trusted by the application | X-Real-IP, X-Forwarded-For, real-IP module settings, and application proxy settings |
| Clients can still reach the origin | Public listener, open security-group rule, forgotten IPv6 rule, or alternate DNS name | All interfaces, IPv4 and IPv6 firewall policy, cloud ACLs, DNS records, and port scans from outside the network |
| Requests fail after enabling PROXY protocol | Only one side of the connection expects the transport header, or an untrusted sender is supplying it | Load-balancer mode, NGINX listen option, and source-address restrictions |
Plan for logs, health checks, and scaling
Use separate access and error logs for the public proxy and the application when possible. Record the request identifier, public host, upstream address or group member, response status, and measured upstream time. Avoid logging sensitive authorization headers. The upstream address can remain in internal logs while never appearing in a client response.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Health checks should use a private path and should not publish diagnostic details. If an upstream group changes, update firewall permissions, DNS, certificates, monitoring, and real-IP trust lists together. A newly added server with a public interface is an origin leak even when existing members are correctly isolated.
Graceful reloads let NGINX adopt configuration changes without dropping established connections. Before reloading, validate syntax with nginx -t; then use the service manager’s reload operation. Keep a tested rollback configuration in case a header, URI, or listener change breaks the public endpoint.
Deployment checklist
- NGINX is the only service exposed on the public web ports.
- The application binds to loopback, a Unix socket, or a private address.
- Origin ports accept traffic only from NGINX or the trusted proxy network.
- IPv4 and IPv6 rules match.
proxy_passpath mapping matches the application routes.Host,X-Real-IP,X-Forwarded-For, andX-Forwarded-Protoare set deliberately.- Forwarded headers are trusted only from explicitly configured proxy addresses.
- PROXY protocol is enabled consistently, or disabled consistently, across the connection.
- Private upstream traffic has the required encryption and peer authentication.
- Old DNS records, certificates, redirects, errors, and telemetry do not reveal a reachable origin.
- External tests confirm that direct origin connections fail while public proxy requests succeed.
Bottom line
Use NGINX as the public endpoint and proxy_pass to send requests to a loopback, private-network, or Unix-socket upstream. Then enforce the boundary with firewall or security-group rules, configure forwarding headers and real-IP trust explicitly, and test every IPv4, IPv6, DNS, TLS, and alternate-service path. Without that network isolation, NGINX is only a forwarding layer—not an origin-hiding control.
