To keep message alerts arriving without showing their contents on a locked Android phone, turn off sensitive lock-screen notification content. On Google’s documented menu path, go to Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notifications on lock screen and turn off Show sensitive content. Menu names vary by phone; this changes what appears in notifications and does not lock the messaging app.
Hide message contents but keep the notification
Android’s lock-screen privacy control lets you conceal notification details while retaining a notification cue. Android’s design guidance describes private notifications as showing basic information such as the app name and icon. The precise preview and controls can depend on the phone and Android version.
- Open Settings, then Notifications.
- Open the lock-screen notification privacy control. On Google’s documented route, this is Privacy > Notifications on lock screen. Other phones may use labels such as Lock screen, Show sensitive content, or Sensitive notifications.
- Turn off Show sensitive content or the equivalent setting.
- If your phone provides per-app lock-screen notification controls, select the messaging app to limit the change to its alerts.
- Lock the phone and send a test message from another device. Check what the lock screen actually displays, since labels and behavior vary.
If the menu labels differ, search Settings for “lock screen” or “notifications.” Google notes that the available settings vary by device. Google’s Android notification settings guidance describes both hiding sensitive content and preventing a particular app’s notifications from appearing on the lock screen.
Choose how much of the alert to show
Android offers two different outcomes: keep a limited notification cue, or suppress that app’s lock-screen notifications more completely. The choice depends on whether you want to know an alert arrived and whether it matters that the app is identifiable.

Where available, use per-app controls if you want other apps’ lock-screen notifications to remain unchanged. Confirm the result on your own phone rather than assuming every manufacturer renders hidden previews the same way.
What hiding previews does—and does not—protect
This setting changes what the lock-screen notification reveals. It does not delete the message, encrypt the conversation, hide notifications everywhere, or protect messages once someone can use an unlocked phone. The behavior of notification history and other device surfaces is not established for every Android version, so do not assume that hiding the preview removes the message body from those places.

If the setting does not produce the result you want, check the messaging app’s own notification options as well as Android’s lock-screen controls. Apps and device makers can expose different notification behavior.
Why Private Space is not the same solution
Android Private Space is for separating and hiding apps, not simply masking previews from the messaging app you normally use. Google says apps in a locked Private Space are completely stopped and cannot perform foreground or background activity, including showing notifications. That conflicts with the goal of keeping the usual messaging app available for alerts while hiding only the message text.

Private Space setup and availability vary: some steps require Android 15 or later, and some features depend on supported hardware. Android’s platform documentation also says telephony intents are routed to the main user and display a notification. A screen privacy filter can make a display harder to read from an angle, but it does not change which notification details Android puts on the lock screen. For message-preview privacy, change the notification setting; a filter is a separate measure for off-angle viewing.
