These controls hide Start recommendations; they do not turn off every suggestion elsewhere in Windows. The settings are under Settings > Personalization > Start, though labels and availability can vary by Windows build.
Turn off app recommendations in Start
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Turn off Show recently added apps to remove that category from Start.
- Turn off Show most used apps to hide the most-used apps category.
Start recommendations can include recently added and frequently used apps, as well as recently opened files. Microsoft says that when users turn off all recommended providers in Settings, the corresponding sections collapse and are no longer shown. Choose whether to hide recent files too
In the same Start settings, turn off Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer if you want to remove recent items as well. This is a shared control: it affects Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer, not just the Start menu. Leave it on if you rely on recent documents in any of those places. Microsoft describes the setting in its guidance on focus settings.
App-launch tracking is a separate choice
Windows also has a privacy setting related to app-launch-based personalization. To change it, open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and turn off Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches. This setting concerns tracking and personalization; it is separate from the Start display toggles above. Microsoft documents it in Privacy settings for recommendations and offers in Windows 11.

What these settings do not remove
Start’s recommendation controls do not switch off every tip, offer, or suggested item in Windows. Microsoft documents personalized offers and suggested content in Settings separately, so a cleaner Start menu should not be taken to mean that all recommendations elsewhere have been disabled. Turning off the advertising ID is not an ad-removal setting either: Microsoft says it does not reduce the number of ads, though ads may be less relevant.
You can also customize Start by unpinning apps or organizing pins into folders, but those are optional layout changes rather than steps required to hide recommendations.
