You can hide messages without deleting them, but the right method depends on what you want out of view. In Google Messages, Archive removes a conversation from the Home screen while keeping it available in Archived. To hide message text from someone glancing at a locked phone, change lock-screen notification privacy instead. Neither option locks a conversation inside the messaging app.
Choose what you want to hide
“Hide messages” can mean removing a thread from the app’s main list, concealing notification previews, or stopping alerts. These are separate controls:

Archive a conversation in Google Messages
Archiving is the simplest way to clear an old conversation from the main list without deleting it. Google’s instructions explain that archived conversations remain accessible in the app’s Archived view: Google Messages: Archive, delete and read conversations.
- Open Google Messages.
- Touch and hold the conversation you want to remove from the Home screen. Select additional conversations if needed.
- Tap Archive. The selected conversation disappears from the Home screen but remains in Archived.
Find or restore an archived conversation
- In Google Messages, tap More > Archived.
- To restore a conversation, touch and hold it, then tap Unarchive.
Archiving is an inbox organization feature, not a locked or secret vault. Anyone who can open Messages and reach Archived can read the thread. Also, if you send a message to an archived conversation, it automatically returns to the Home screen.

Hide message previews on the lock screen
If your concern is someone seeing a message preview while your phone is locked, change Android’s lock-screen notification settings. The exact route and wording vary by Android version and phone maker; Android describes the available controls in its notification settings guidance.
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Open the lock-screen notification controls. Depending on the phone, look for an option such as Show sensitive content, Hide sensitive notification content, or Don’t show notifications.
- Choose the level of privacy you want. Hiding sensitive content preserves notifications while concealing their details; turning off lock-screen notifications hides them more broadly.
The broad “Don’t show notifications” choice may apply to all apps when set as the default. Some phones offer app-specific lock-screen controls, but availability and labels vary. These settings affect notification visibility only; they do not remove the conversation from Messages.

Silence alerts from one conversation
Use Silent when you want to stop interruptions rather than hide the thread. On supported Android devices, pull down the notification shade, touch and hold the conversation notification, and choose Silent. Google documents this notification behavior in its Android notification controls.

The precise controls can vary by app and device; Google’s Messages notification settings cover conversation notifications. Silencing stops alerts but leaves the thread available in the messaging app.

What Android Private Space does—and does not do
Private Space can keep apps in a separate, lockable area that is hidden from the launcher and some operating-system surfaces while locked. It is not a way to move existing message history out of your regular profile. Installing a messaging app in Private Space creates a separate app instance; the original instance and its data are not copied or changed. Google explains this behavior in its Private Space guide.
Because the separate instance does not import the main-space app’s existing SMS or RCS history, do not choose Private Space expecting your current conversations to appear there automatically.

Samsung Galaxy: use the current app guidance
For current Galaxy devices, Samsung recommends Google Messages on Android 12 and later. Samsung’s U.S. support notice says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher starting July 2026; it also cautions that settings and screens can vary by carrier, software version, and device. Pick the method that matches your privacy goal
- For a tidier conversation list: Archive the thread in Google Messages and retrieve it from More > Archived when needed.
- To keep previews off a locked screen: Hide sensitive lock-screen notification content or turn off lock-screen notifications.
- To stop interruptions: Set the conversation’s notifications to Silent.
- For a separate app space: Private Space provides a separate instance, not access to the message history already stored in the main-space app.
If you need to prevent someone who can unlock your phone from reading a conversation, archiving and silencing are not access controls: both leave the thread readable in the messaging app.
