Discord links can quickly clutter a chat, especially when they generate large previews, reveal long URLs, or interrupt the flow of a conversation. While Discord does not let regular users fully disguise a URL behind custom anchor text the way a web page does, there are still practical ways to make links less visible, less disruptive, or easier to manage.
You can use spoiler tags to obscure a link until someone clicks it, suppress embeds to prevent previews from expanding, and apply simple formatting choices to keep messages tidy. In servers, permissions, moderation bots, and channel rules can also help control where links appear and who can post them.

It is also worth being clear about safety: hiding a link should not be used to mislead people about where it goes. Discord’s limitations around masked hyperlinks are partly useful for transparency, so any method you use should keep links readable, trustworthy, and appropriate for the channel.

Hide a Link Using Spoiler Tags
The simplest built-in way to make a Discord link less visible is to wrap it in spoiler tags. A spoiler tag hides the text behind a dark overlay until someone clicks or taps it. This does not remove the link, encrypt it, or make it private, but it does reduce visual clutter and prevents the URL from being immediately readable in the chat.

To hide a link with spoiler formatting, place two vertical bars on each side of the URL. For example, typing ||https://example.com|| will display the link as a spoiler block. Other users will see a covered section in the message, and they can reveal it by selecting it. This works in regular text channels, direct messages, and most places where Discord supports standard message formatting.
How to add spoiler tags around a link
- Copy the link you want to share.
- Click or tap the message box in Discord.
- Type two vertical bars: ||.
- Paste the full link after the bars.
- Type two more vertical bars at the end: ||.
- Send the message.
On desktop, you can also highlight the link before sending it and use Discord’s formatting controls if they appear. The manual bar method is usually faster and more reliable, especially when you are sharing from mobile. On most keyboards, the vertical bar character is found near the backslash key on desktop, while mobile users may need to open the symbols section of the keyboard.
Spoiler tags can be used with surrounding text as well. For instance, you might write: Resource link: ||https://example.com||. This lets people understand what the hidden content is without exposing the full URL immediately. If the link contains sensitive-looking information, long tracking parameters, invite codes, or a destination that might distract from the conversation, spoiler formatting can make the message cleaner.
What spoiler tags do and do not hide
- They hide the visible URL in the message until a user reveals it.
- They do not make the link private; anyone who can see the message can reveal it.
- They do not prevent copying once the spoiler is opened.
- They do not guarantee the embed preview is hidden in every situation, so you may also need to suppress embeds separately.
- They do not disguise the destination as another word or phrase like a traditional masked hyperlink.
If your goal is simply to keep a channel tidy, spoiler tags are a good first option. If your goal is to stop a link preview from appearing below the message, use spoiler tags together with Discord’s embed suppression methods. If your goal is to share something privately, use the right channel, direct message, or server permission setup instead of relying on spoiler formatting.
Suppress Link Previews and Embeds
When you paste a link into Discord, the app may automatically generate a preview card below your message. This embed can show a title, description, image, video player, or website metadata, depending on the site. If your goal is to make a link less intrusive in chat, suppressing the preview is usually the cleanest option because the URL remains visible while the large preview disappears.
The quickest method is to wrap the link in angle brackets. For example, typing <https://example.com/page> sends the link without the expanded preview card in most cases. The link is still clickable, and other users can still see the full destination. This is useful when sharing long articles, social posts, videos, or storefront pages without taking up a large amount of channel space.
How to suppress an embed for one link
- Copy the URL you want to share.
- Paste it into the message box.
- Place a < before the URL and a > after it.
- Send the message.
You can also remove an embed after sending a message if Discord generated one. On desktop, hover over your message, select the message options, and choose the option to remove or suppress embeds if it is available. This affects the preview card, not the link itself. Other users will still be able to click the URL in the message, but the visual preview will no longer appear below it.

Disable embeds through channel or role permissions
Server administrators can reduce link previews more broadly by adjusting permissions. The relevant permission is typically Embed Links. If a role does not have this permission in a channel, links posted by members with that role are less likely to expand into rich preview cards. This is helpful in announcement channels, support channels, resource lists, or any place where large embeds make conversations harder to read.
- For one channel: Open the channel settings, go to permissions, choose a role or member, and deny Embed Links.
- For a role: Open server settings, go to roles, select the role, and adjust the embed-related permission if available.
- For cleaner moderation: Combine embed restrictions with slowmode or link filtering rules when channels are frequently spammed.
Suppressing previews does not hide the link destination, bypass Discord’s safety systems, or make a suspicious link safer. It only changes how the message is displayed. If you are sharing links in a community server, it is usually better to keep the full URL visible or add a short description such as official documentation, event signup form, or YouTube tutorial. That helps people understand what they are clicking without relying on a preview card.
Format Links to Make Them Less Noticeable
If you do not need to fully hide a Discord link, you can format the message around it so the URL is less visually distracting. Discord does not let you freely change a normal URL into custom anchor text in regular chat, but Markdown formatting can reduce clutter, separate the link from the main sentence, or make the post easier to scan. This is useful when sharing long invite links, documentation URLs, image links, or tracking-heavy addresses that would otherwise dominate the message.
One simple approach is to place the link on its own line after a short description. Instead of putting a long URL in the middle of a sentence, write the context first, then add the link below it. For example, a message such as “Here is the setup guide:” followed by the URL on the next line is cleaner than embedding the full address inside a paragraph. You can also use Discord’s block quote formatting with > at the start of a line to visually separate supporting links from the main message, though the link remains clickable and visible.

If your goal is to show a URL without turning it into a clickable link, wrap it in inline code formatting with backticks. For example, writing a URL inside backticks displays it as code-style text and usually prevents Discord from treating it as a normal clickable preview link. This can be helpful when you are discussing a domain, showing an example URL, or warning users about a suspicious address without encouraging clicks. However, users can still copy and paste the text manually, so this is not a security barrier.
- Inline code: Best for short URLs, domains, or examples that should not stand out as clickable links.
- Code blocks: Useful for multiple links, logs, configuration snippets, or reference material.
- Block quotes: Good for placing a source link beneath a message without making it the visual focus.
- Short context labels: Add a brief description above the link so people know what it is before opening it.
You can also reduce visual noise by removing unnecessary URL parameters before posting, as long as the link still works. Many links include tracking strings such as utm_source, utm_campaign, or long referral data after a question mark. Trimming these parts often makes the URL shorter and easier to read. Be careful with links where the query string controls the actual page, search result, invitation, file access, or checkout session; removing the wrong part can break the link or change where it sends people.
For a cleaner look, consider using the shortest official version of a link available from the service itself. For example, a documentation page, YouTube video, GitHub issue, or Discord invite may have a share button that provides a shorter canonical URL. Avoid using random third-party URL shorteners just to make a link less noticeable, especially in public servers. Shorteners can obscure the destination, trigger moderation filters, and make members less likely to trust the message. A visible, recognizable domain is usually safer than a mysterious shortened link.

Can You Create Masked Hyperlinks on Discord?
In normal Discord messages, you generally cannot create a masked hyperlink where custom text such as click here secretly points to a URL. Discord does not support standard Markdown link syntax like text in regular chat messages. If you paste that format into a server channel or direct message, Discord will usually display it as plain text rather than turning the words into a clickable hidden link.
This design makes links more transparent. Discord wants users to see the actual destination before clicking, which helps reduce phishing, malware, and scam attempts. For everyday users, a web address needs to be visible in the message itself, even if you place it inside spoiler tags, wrap it in angle brackets to suppress an embed, or format the surrounding text to make the message less visually intrusive.
Where masked links can appear
There are a few places where Discord-style interfaces may show clickable text, but these are not the same as regular user-created masked links in chat. For example, some bot messages, webhooks, and embedded messages can include buttons or formatted fields that link somewhere. These depend on Discord’s developer tools and the permissions granted to the bot or integration, not on normal message formatting available to every user.
- Regular chat messages: masked hyperlinks are not supported; the URL must be visible to be clickable.
- Bot embeds: bots can display richer message layouts, sometimes with linked titles, buttons, or fields.
- Server announcements or integrations: some automated posts may include clickable elements created through Discord’s API.
- User profiles and certain app surfaces: Discord may show links in specific interface areas, but this is separate from masking links in a normal message.
If you see a message that looks like a clean button or linked title, treat it as an interactive Discord component rather than a Markdown-style hidden link typed by a regular user. In community servers, these are often used for rules, verification, support tickets, event signups, or documentation. They can be helpful, but users should still check whether the bot is trusted and whether the linked destination matches the purpose of the server.
Trying to disguise a link by using misleading text around it is not a safe workaround. For example, writing “Discord support page” next to a URL that actually goes to an unrelated domain can confuse people and may violate server rules. If you need a link to take up less space, use safer options: put it in spoiler tags, suppress the preview with angle brackets, use a short but recognizable URL from a trusted domain, or explain the destination clearly before the link.
Be careful with URL shorteners as well. Services that turn a long address into a compact link can make messages cleaner, but they also hide the final destination until someone opens them. Many Discord communities restrict or block shortened links because scammers use them to conceal malicious pages. When possible, share the full domain or use an official short link from a well-known service, company, or project so recipients can make an informed choice before clicking.
Hide Links in Server Channels with Permissions or Bots
If you manage a Discord server, you can make links less visible by controlling where members are allowed to post them. This does not “hide” a link after it has been sent, but it can keep links out of busy public channels and move them into places where they are expected, such as a resources channel, announcements channel, or staff-only review channel. For many communities, this is cleaner than asking everyone to spoiler every URL manually.

Use channel permissions to limit who can post links
Discord permissions cannot block only URLs by themselves, but they can restrict who can send messages in a channel. For example, you can create a #links, #resources, or #promotions channel and allow link sharing there while keeping general chat link-free through server rules and moderation. You can also make announcement-style channels where only admins, moderators, or trusted roles can post, which keeps shared links curated and easier to review.
- Read-only channels: Allow everyone to view the channel, but only selected roles can send messages.
- Private channels: Limit both viewing and posting to staff, partners, subscribers, or approved members.
- Role-gated sharing: Give link-posting access only to members who have earned a trusted role.
- Slowmode: Reduce link spam by limiting how often users can post in a channel.
To set this up, open the channel settings, go to Permissions, and adjust the permissions for @everyone and any custom roles. Turning off Send Messages for general members makes the channel read-only. For private link areas, disable View Channel for @everyone, then enable it only for the roles that should have access. This is useful for staff review queues, sponsor links, internal documentation, or community resources that should not be visible to every visitor.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use moderation bots to filter or remove links
Moderation bots can help enforce link rules more precisely than Discord’s basic permission system. Bots such as Dyno, Carl-bot, MEE6, Sapphire, or Wick can detect messages containing URLs and delete them, warn the sender, timeout repeat offenders, or move the message into a moderation log. Many bots also let you create allowlists, so links from trusted domains such as your official website, documentation, YouTube channel, or support page can remain visible while unknown domains are blocked.
| Method | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Channel permissions | Keeping link sharing in approved areas | Does not detect URLs inside allowed messages |
| Read-only channels | Curated resources, announcements, official links | Only selected roles can contribute |
| Bot link filters | Blocking spam, scams, invites, unknown domains | Needs setup and occasional tuning |
| Allowlisted domains | Permitting trusted sites while blocking others | Can block legitimate new links until added |
For the best results, combine permissions with bot moderation. For example, allow links only in #resources, block invite links in general chat, allow official domains everywhere, and send removed messages to a private mod-log channel. Make the rule visible in your server guidelines so members understand that links are being organized for safety and readability, not secretly hidden. This approach keeps channels cleaner while still giving members a safe, predictable place to share useful URLs.

Making a Discord link less visible can reduce clutter, prevent spoilers, or keep a channel easier to read, but it should not be used to disguise where a link goes. Before you hide a link with spoiler tags, suppress an embed, or place it in a restricted channel, check that the destination is safe, relevant, and allowed by the server’s rules. Discord users are understandably cautious about hidden links because phishing, fake Nitro pages, token stealers, and malware often rely on people clicking before they inspect the URL.
When sharing a link, use the clearest version of the URL you can. A visible domain such as discord.com, youtube.com, or a known company website is easier for others to evaluate than a shortened or redirected link. Avoid URL shorteners unless there is a practical reason to use one, and do not combine shorteners with spoiler tags or vague wording such as “click this” or “free reward.” If you need to share a long link, explain what it is for in the message text so people know what to expect before opening it.
Check links before posting them
- Inspect the domain carefully: Look for misspellings, extra characters, or lookalike domains such as “disc0rd” instead of “discord.”
- Watch for fake login pages: Be suspicious of any link that asks users to sign into Discord, Steam, Google, or another account unexpectedly.
- Avoid suspicious downloads: Do not hide direct downloads for executable files, browser extensions, scripts, or zipped folders unless the source is trusted and clearly explained.
- Use trusted scanners when appropriate: Services such as VirusTotal can help check unfamiliar URLs, though no scanner can guarantee a link is safe.
- Preview before sharing: Open the link yourself in a safe browser session and confirm it goes where you intend.
Be especially careful with links sent in direct messages. Many Discord scams spread through compromised accounts that message friends with hidden or urgent links. If someone sends a spoilered link, a shortened URL, or a message about free Nitro, game items, giveaways, account reports, or “checking your profile,” verify it through another channel before clicking. Server moderators should also consider adding rules that require users to describe hidden links and prohibit misleading formatting.

Privacy matters as well. Some links can reveal personal information, tracking IDs, invite codes, document access tokens, email addresses, or location-related data. Before posting a Google Drive file, Notion page, calendar invite, image URL, or private server invite, confirm that the sharing settings are intentional. If a link includes long tracking parameters after a question mark, you can often remove unnecessary parts such as marketing tags, but be careful not to delete access tokens that are required for the link to work.
Discord does not allow users to create normal masked hyperlinks in regular chat, which helps prevent deceptive link text like “official support” pointing to a malicious site. That limitation is useful for safety, but it does not remove all risk. Spoiler tags, embed suppression, code formatting, permissions, and bots can make links less prominent, yet the safest approach is still transparency: tell people what the link is, where it goes, and whether they need to sign in, download anything, or share information after opening it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a clickable word or phrase link to a URL on Discord?
In normal Discord messages, you generally cannot create masked hyperlinks where text like “click here” hides the actual URL. Discord shows the full link to help users see where they are going before they click. If you see masked links, they are usually from embeds, bots, webhooks, or special app-generated content rather than regular user messages.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I hide a Discord link behind a spoiler warning?
Wrap the link in double vertical bars, like ||https://example.com||, before sending it. Discord will cover the link until someone clicks or taps the spoiler. This makes the link less visible, but it does not make it private or prevent others from opening it.
How do I stop Discord from showing a preview under my link?
You can place angle brackets around the URL, such as <https://example.com>, to suppress the embed preview for that message. On desktop, you may also see an “X” on a generated preview that lets you remove it before or after sending. Server and user settings can also affect whether embeds appear.
Can server admins hide links from certain Discord channels?
Admins can limit who sees links by controlling channel permissions, roles, and access to private channels. They can also use moderation bots to block, delete, or filter links based on rules such as domain, role, or channel. This does not hide a link inside a message from people who can already view that message.
Is it safe to hide links on Discord?
Hiding a link can reduce clutter, but it can also make people less confident about where the link goes. For safer sharing, use the full domain when possible, avoid URL shorteners for sensitive links, and explain what the link is for. Never use formatting to disguise phishing pages, malware, invite spam, or anything that violates Discord’s rules.
