The exact steps depend on the game: first identify whether you want to change one gear piece’s look, apply a full outfit, or hide a specific slot such as a helmet.
Choose the appearance change you want
These are separate features, even when a game groups them in one menu:

- Change a gear piece’s skin: Keep the item and its stats, but make it display another item’s appearance.
- Apply a full-body outfit: Use a cosmetic outfit that covers or replaces the appearance of equipped armor.
- Hide a slot: Make a specific item, often a helmet or hat, invisible without replacing it.
Before following a guide, identify the MMO and check its current interface. Menu labels, unlock requirements, compatibility, and costs vary by game and can change after patches.

Guild Wars 2 separates stat-bearing equipment from its appearance: the equipment panel handles the gear, while Wardrobe choices change how that gear looks. ArenaNet described this distinction in its Wardrobe announcement.

Change individual skins
In the current interface, use the Fashion tab’s Wardrobe section to choose skins for equipped items. ArenaNet’s Fashion Templates support guide says that saving changed skins usually costs one Transmutation Charge per changed item. Dye changes are free, and a slot with corresponding legendary gear can be transmuted without the charge. Check the current Fashion Templates support guide for the applicable details.
Save and apply a cosmetic loadout
Fashion Templates, introduced in the February 3, 2026 patch according to ArenaNet’s guide, save cosmetic loadouts containing armor, weapon, backpack skins, and dyes. Applying a saved template to gear is free; saving new skin changes is where the usual Transmutation Charge cost applies. A template can also be set to apply automatically when gear changes. Because that setting overwrites cosmetics currently applied to the affected equipment, review the template before enabling it.

Use an outfit instead
An outfit is a full-appearance option rather than a set of individual gear-slot skins. ArenaNet’s Wardrobe announcement says outfits replace the look of equipped armor without Transmutation Charges. Consult the current in-game Fashion interface for available outfits and controls.

Final Fantasy XIV uses glamour prisms to project one item’s appearance onto another. The FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone UI Guide says to unlock the feature by completing the level 15 quest “If I Had a Glamour.”

Apply the appearance
Once unlocked, use a glamour prism with Cast Glamour. The guide lists three ways to cast it: from Actions & Traits, from an item’s subcommands, or through the glamour dresser in an inn room. The source describes the core action this way: “Glamour prisms project the image of one item onto another with the Cast Glamour action.”
Check appearance restrictions
A glamour with race-, gender-, or Grand Company-specific requirements will not display if the relevant requirement is unmet, according to the Lodestone guide. The guide does not establish every possible item-compatibility rule, so check the target item and current game interface rather than assuming any appearance can be applied to any gear.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Hide headwear with the matching control
In The Elder Scrolls Online, hiding ordinary equipment or costume headwear is different from hiding a polymorph helmet. Bethesda Support’s article, “How do I hide my helmet or hat?”, provides these routes:
- Equipment or costume helmet/hat: Open Collections → Appearance → Hats and choose “Hide Your Helm.” Alternatively, use an Outfit Station and go to Equipment → Armor Styles → Head.
- Polymorph helmet: Use the separate “Hide Polymorph Helmet” setting, with navigation that varies by platform.
Bethesda notes that a helmet or hat cannot be hidden while it is on a disguise; unequip the disguise to use the hide option.

World of Warcraft: Treat the announced outfit system as version-dependent
Blizzard’s February 12, 2026 announcement under the Midnight heading describes an updated transmog system that saves appearances to Outfit Slots. It says new gear in a slot inherits that slot’s saved look, and updating an outfit to a specific style incurs a gold cost. See Blizzard’s “Dress for Every Situation with the Updated Transmog System” announcement for its description.
The announcement is not enough to establish that the feature has rolled out everywhere or to provide current live-client steps. Check your game version and the in-game transmog interface before relying on the described behavior or cost.

What to verify before spending currency or changing gear
- Confirm whether you are changing a single gear skin, applying an outfit, or hiding one slot; these may use different menus and costs.
- Check whether the appearance remains when you equip a replacement item. Guild Wars 2 templates and Blizzard’s announced WoW Outfit Slots address loadout persistence, but do not assume all MMOs work the same way.
- Look for unlock quests, item or character requirements, and slot-specific hide controls.
- Review the cost at the point of use. Guild Wars 2 distinguishes saving changed skins from applying a saved template, while Blizzard’s WoW announcement describes a gold cost for updating an outfit.
