How to Hide Apps on Windows 11 and Windows 10

Windows can hide desktop icons, remove Start and taskbar pins, or move tray icons out of view. These steps change visibility, not whether an app is installed.

Windows lets you hide desktop icons, remove app shortcuts from Start or the taskbar, and move notification-area icons out of view. These actions change what appears in parts of the interface; they do not uninstall an app or hide one installed app everywhere in Windows. Choose the steps below that match what you want to hide.

Which kind of app visibility do you want to change?

Goal Control What it changes
Clear the desktop Desktop View menu Hides or restores all desktop icons together. The files remain accessible in File Explorer.
Remove a Start shortcut Unpin from Start Removes the selected app’s pin, not the installed app.
Reduce taskbar clutter Unpin from taskbar Removes a pinned taskbar button. An app may still appear there while it is running.
Reduce notification-area clutter Taskbar settings and the overflow area Changes which notification-area icons are shown; it does not change the app’s installed state or Start listing.
Hide the Start app list A Start setting or, on managed devices, an administrative policy Applies to the list as a whole, not just one app.

How do you hide all desktop icons?

This works in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It hides icons as a group; it does not move or delete the desktop files and shortcuts.

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
  2. Select View.
  3. Clear Show desktop icons.

To show the icons again, repeat the steps and select Show desktop icons. You can still open desktop contents in File Explorer by selecting Desktop in the navigation pane.

How do you remove an app from Start?

Windows 11

Right-click the app in Start’s pinned area and select Unpin from Start. This removes the pin, not the app. Start separates Pinned apps from All, where installed apps can be browsed.

Windows 10

Right-click the app’s Start tile or shortcut and choose the available unpin option. Windows 10 uses a different Start layout from Windows 11, and labels can vary by version and build. Unpinning removes the shortcut or tile; it does not uninstall the program.

Can you hide the entire Start app list?

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Start guidance includes an option to hide the app list from the Start layout. This hides the list as a whole, not one named app across Windows. On managed devices, Microsoft documents a policy to remove and disable the all-apps list; its availability note specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 with KB5062660. That is an administrative, whole-list control rather than a typical per-app setting.

How do you remove an app from the taskbar or hide a tray icon?

Unpin a taskbar app

Right-click the app pinned to the taskbar and select Unpin from taskbar. This removes its pinned button. If the app is open, it may still appear on the taskbar while running.

Change notification-area icon visibility

Open Taskbar settings and choose which notification-area icons appear. Depending on the Windows version, icons not shown in the main tray may be available in an overflow or hidden-icons area. A tray icon is distinct from an app’s taskbar button, Start entry, and installed program.

Can you hide one installed app everywhere in Windows?

The built-in controls described here affect shortcuts, broad Start-list visibility, desktop icons, or notification-area icons. They do not provide a general way to conceal a selected installed app from every Windows list, search result, and Settings surface. Windows 11 provides the installed-app list at Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Removing a pin or hiding an icon should not be treated as privacy protection or system-wide concealment.

What should Windows 10 users know about support?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC does not stop working, but its support status has changed.
