If your concern is an order being announced on an Echo device, turn off item-title shopping notifications in the Alexa app. These controls reduce specific kinds of household visibility; they do not delete Amazon’s purchase records or make a shared Amazon login private order by order.
The right step depends on what someone else can see: the order history in a shared login, an item name announced by Alexa, a shared Shopping List, or a package at the door. Those are different exposure points. Amazon’s current US guidance supports account separation for adult order histories and a separate Alexa setting for shopping announcements; neither is a universal “hide purchase” switch.

How do I hide an Amazon order from my family?
If adults in your household currently use one Amazon sign-on, Amazon’s US guidance points to separate adult accounts through Amazon Family—not a setting that hides one purchase inside a shared order history. Amazon says adult orders are automatically private from other people in the home when adults have their own sign-ons.

That distinction matters: separate sign-ons are the account-level measure for separating adult order histories. Alexa notification settings address announcements on compatible devices, not who can inspect orders in a shared account. Neither option should be treated as a guarantee that every trace of a purchase or delivery is concealed.

In practical terms, first identify which account or device could reveal the purchase. If another household member can sign in to the same Amazon account, that shared account is the issue: Amazon’s documented approach is to give adults separate sign-ons through Amazon Family, subject to eligibility and terms. If you already use separate adult sign-ons but an Echo may announce an item, adjust the Alexa shopping-notification setting. If both are possible, review both rather than expecting one control to cover the other.
Set up separate adult sign-ons
- Open Amazon’s Amazon Family information and help pages for your marketplace, and check the current eligibility and on-screen terms.
- Have each adult use their own Amazon account and sign-on rather than sharing credentials.
- Follow the Amazon Family account-linking flow if eligible. Amazon says adults agree to share payment methods for household verification; payment-method sharing or other requirements can depend on the feature and eligibility.
- After linking, review the household’s Alexa notification preferences and Amazon Shopping Lists separately. Account separation does not mean every household feature or notification is private.
Do not assume every Prime member, marketplace, or plan has identical Amazon Family eligibility. Read the terms shown for your accounts before linking them, particularly if payment-method sharing is a concern.
Amazon’s US Amazon Family help describes account linking and eligibility, while its consumer guide explains the privacy benefit for adult orders. Treat those as related but distinct parts of setup: the first is about whether your accounts can be linked and what the linking flow requires; the second describes what Amazon says happens to adults’ order visibility after they have separate access. If the on-screen terms for your account differ from what you expected, pause and review them before proceeding.
Separate sign-ons are not the same as sharing a login and trying to keep one transaction out of view. Avoid giving another person your credentials if the goal is to maintain separate adult order histories; a person who can access the same sign-on may be able to inspect account information. Amazon’s documented guidance does not describe a per-order privacy switch for a shared US login.
Can I hide an Amazon purchase from my spouse?
The practical answer depends on how the account is used. With separate adult sign-ons under Amazon Family, Amazon says adult orders are private from other people in the home. If you and your spouse use the same Amazon login, Amazon’s documented account-separation approach does not provide a way to hide only one order from the other person who can access that login.
Even with linked adult accounts, do not equate private order histories with complete household privacy. Amazon says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists, and linked-family Alexa devices may receive notifications associated with other linked members. A shared list, notification, or visible package can disclose information independently of the order-history view.

For example, an order may be private in the adult order-history view while a related item remains visible because it was added to a Shopping List both adults use. Or an Echo device may announce or show an item title through shopping notifications even though the accounts are separate. These examples involve different features, so resolving one does not automatically resolve the other. Review the shared list and Alexa settings as their own surfaces.

Physical delivery is another limit. The account and Alexa controls described by Amazon concern digital access and notifications; they cannot guarantee that another household member will not notice a package when it arrives. The research-supported steps here should therefore be understood as reducing specific digital visibility, not guaranteeing that a purchase, delivery, or any related activity will be unnoticed.
How do I stop Alexa from announcing what I ordered?
Turn off the shopping-notification option that lets Alexa say or show item titles. Amazon’s US guide gives this path in the Alexa app:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Open Notifications, then Amazon Shopping.
- Turn off the option that allows Alexa to say or show item titles in shopping notifications.
App labels can change as the interface is updated. This setting addresses item names in Alexa shopping notifications; it does not remove the order from Amazon, separate a shared account’s order history, or prevent someone with access to the account from looking up the purchase.
Use this setting when the concern is specifically what an Alexa-enabled device says or displays about shopping activity. It is a narrower and simpler adjustment than linking adult accounts, but it is not a replacement for separate sign-ons when another household member can open the same account. In the same way, separate sign-ons do not automatically mean an Echo will stop giving every shopping notification: the Alexa controls are a separate layer to check.

Amazon’s Alexa help guidance describes controls for notifications received from linked accounts and notifications sent to linked accounts. If your household has linked Amazon Family accounts and Alexa devices, review those preferences as well as the item-title control. A change to one notification setting should not be assumed to silence every notification shared across linked accounts.

This matters because Amazon says linked-family devices may receive other members’ notifications. If an announcement appears to relate to a different adult’s account, look for the receive-from and send-to-linked-accounts preferences in the Alexa app rather than assuming the item-title toggle is the only relevant control. Amazon’s help describes these as separate notification controls, so consider both the content of an announcement and which linked account may be sending it.
Also keep the scope of the control in mind: the Alexa app setting governs shopping notifications, not Amazon’s stored purchase history. Someone with access to the relevant Amazon account may still be able to look up the order. For a household using a shared login, the order-history access problem remains even if Alexa no longer says or shows item titles.
Can I delete an Amazon order from my history?
For US customers, do not rely on the old “Archive order” instructions. In an Amazon.com Digital and Device Forum response dated May 2, 2025, Amazon Staff responder Diane B. wrote: “You can no longer archive orders.” That response is the relevant US guidance here, so older directions to open Your Orders and select Archive order should not be presented as a current US solution.

Archiving and deleting are also different questions. Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account. The documented household-privacy measures described here reduce visibility to other household members through separate adult sign-ons or Alexa notification controls; they do not erase Amazon’s transaction records.
So if your goal is to remove a past transaction from Amazon’s records, these steps do not do that. If your goal is to keep another adult from seeing an order in a shared account, the currently documented US route is account separation, not a promise that a past order can be erased or individually hidden. Do not confuse a change to a device notification with a change to the order record itself.
Why international instructions may differ
Amazon’s UK consumer guide still describes archiving a previous order from desktop Your Orders, removing it from the default history view, and finding it under Archived Orders. That UK guidance conflicts with the later Amazon Staff response for US customers. Feature availability can vary by marketplace, so readers outside the United States should check the controls and help information for their local Amazon marketplace rather than assume either set of instructions applies everywhere.

This is a marketplace distinction, not a reason to apply the UK steps to an Amazon.com account. The UK guide describes an archive procedure; the May 2, 2025 US staff response says US customers can no longer archive orders. If you shop in another marketplace, use the account controls and help pages for that marketplace, and check that they are current for your location before acting on an older instruction.

| Option | What it addresses | Setup | What can still be visible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate adult accounts through Amazon Family | Adult order-history access between household members, according to Amazon’s US guidance | Separate adult sign-ons and account linking; terms and eligibility can vary | Shared Amazon Shopping Lists, linked-account notifications, and physical delivery visibility |
| Alexa shopping-notification controls | Item titles said or shown in Alexa shopping notifications | Change the setting in the Alexa app under More > Settings > Notifications > Amazon Shopping | Order history accessible through the Amazon account, other linked-account notifications, and delivery visibility |
Choose based on where information is leaking. If another adult can open the same Amazon login and view its orders, changing Alexa settings is not a substitute for account separation. If the account is already separate but an Echo could reveal item names, adjust the notification controls. If both are concerns, address both surfaces and review shared lists and linked-account settings.
The trade-off is straightforward. Account separation addresses access to adult order histories and requires separate sign-ons plus account linking, with terms and eligibility to consider. Alexa notification controls address what compatible devices say or show and involve changing an app preference. The first does not by itself settle shared lists or device notifications; the second does not separate order histories. Neither eliminates the possibility that someone notices a delivery.
There is no additional physical product required for these two tasks in the documented guidance: the account-level option is Amazon Family, and the announcement control is in the Alexa app. A new Echo or a generic privacy accessory would not solve the underlying issue of someone having access to a shared Amazon login, and it is not necessary to follow the controls described here.
What these settings do—and do not—hide
- They can reduce household visibility: Amazon says separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family keep adult orders private from other people in the home; Alexa settings can stop item-title shopping notifications.
- They do not erase Amazon’s records: Amazon’s privacy notice identifies purchase history as information available through Your Account.
- They do not make shared features private: Amazon says adults share Shopping Lists, and linked Alexa devices may receive notifications for other linked members.
- They cannot ensure a delivery is unnoticeable: Account and notification settings address digital visibility, not what household members may see when a package arrives.
A useful final check is to ask what you are trying to protect against. If it is order-history access, examine whether adults have separate sign-ons and whether Amazon Family is available under the terms shown for your accounts. If it is a spoken or displayed item title, review Alexa’s Amazon Shopping notifications and the linked-account notification preferences. If it is an item on a shared list, remember that Amazon says adult Shopping Lists are shared. If it is a package, these digital controls cannot guarantee it will go unnoticed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hide an Amazon order from my family?
For US customers, Amazon’s documented route is separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family. Amazon says adult orders are automatically private from other people in the home when adults have their own sign-ons. A shared login does not provide a documented way to hide just one order from another person who can access it.
Best Value
Can I hide an Amazon purchase from my spouse if we share one account?
Amazon’s US guidance describes separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family, not a per-order privacy setting for a shared login. If both people can sign in to the same account, Alexa notification controls will not separate that account’s order history.
Can I delete an Amazon order from my history?
Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account. Amazon Staff responder Diane B. said on May 2, 2025, “You can no longer archive orders” for US customers. The controls described here reduce household visibility; they do not erase Amazon’s transaction records.
How do I stop Alexa from announcing what I ordered?
In the Alexa app, go to More > Settings > Notifications > Amazon Shopping and turn off the option that lets Alexa say or show item titles in shopping notifications. App labels can change, and this setting does not hide the order from someone who can access the Amazon account.
Will Amazon Family hide everything from other people in my household?
No. Amazon says adult orders are private from other household members when adults use separate sign-ons, but adults share Amazon Shopping Lists, and linked Alexa devices may receive notifications associated with other linked members. Packages may also be visible when delivered.
Can I use the Archive order button in the United States?
Do not rely on older US instructions. In a May 2, 2025 Amazon.com Digital and Device Forum response, Amazon Staff said US customers can no longer archive orders. Amazon’s UK guide still describes archiving, so availability and instructions may differ by marketplace.
Do I need to buy anything to keep Amazon orders private?
The documented options are account separation through Amazon Family and Alexa app notification settings. The guidance does not require a separate physical product; an Alexa setting also cannot fix order-history access through a shared Amazon login.
The Bottom Line
For US households, use separate adult Amazon sign-ons through Amazon Family to separate adult order histories, subject to eligibility and the terms shown when linking accounts. Turn off Alexa item-title shopping notifications if an Echo might announce a purchase, and review linked-account notifications and shared Shopping Lists separately. These steps can reduce household visibility, but they do not delete Amazon’s purchase records or guarantee that a delivery will go unnoticed.
