To help your dog sleep through the night without disturbing you, first work out why the dog is waking: a puppy may need a toilet break, a dog unsettled by separation may need gradual practice sleeping alone, and a new change in an older dog’s routine may warrant a veterinary check. Then choose a comfortable, safe sleeping spot and build a predictable bedtime routine around your dog’s needs.
Start by identifying why your dog wakes
For a few nights, note when your dog wakes and what happens next. Does the dog go to the door, pace, vocalize when separated, or move repeatedly between sleeping places? Has the waking started recently, or has it always been part of the routine? These clues help distinguish a toilet need, difficulty settling alone, discomfort, or a change worth discussing with a veterinarian.

- Wakes and needs to go outside: Puppies in particular may not yet be able to hold their bladder and bowels all night.
- Becomes distressed when separated: The sleeping arrangement may need to change gradually rather than through forced confinement.
- Has recently begun waking or sleeping differently: Especially in an older dog, a new pattern can have a health-related cause.
Make puppy expectations realistic
A young puppy may need a quiet toilet outing during the night; expecting every puppy to sleep through without one is not realistic. If your puppy wakes and appears to need to eliminate, take them out calmly, keep the trip brief and focused on toileting, and return them to bed without turning it into playtime.

For a newly arrived puppy, Blue Cross recommends initially having the puppy sleep in the owner’s bedroom, in a bed or crate. That guidance is for the adjustment period, not a rule that every adult dog must sleep in the bedroom. See Blue Cross’s puppy-specific guidance.

Choose a sleeping arrangement that suits both of you
There is no single best setup for every dog. Compare the dog’s age and toilet needs, how calmly they settle, your own sleep, the dog’s comfort and mobility, and any safety concerns. Options include sharing the bed, a dog bed nearby, a crate, or a pen or gated area.

VCA reports that almost half of dogs sleep with their owners, and gives figures of 62% for small dogs, 41% for medium-sized dogs, and 32% for large dogs allowed to sleep with their human families. These are figures reported by VCA in its 2024 article; the underlying study was not verified here, and the numbers do not show that bed-sharing is best for any individual household. Teach a separate sleeping place gradually
A bed, mat, crate, pen, or gated area should become a place where your dog can relax, not a punishment or a way to ignore their needs. Reward calm interest and settling, and increase the time spent there in manageable stages.
- Set up the resting place: Choose a comfortable location and, if using a crate, one that allows the dog to stand, turn, and stretch.
- Let the dog explore: Start with the crate door open or the sleeping area freely accessible. Pair calm exploration with positive experiences.
- Build duration in stages: Once your dog settles comfortably, gradually practise longer periods in the space rather than shutting them away for a full night straight away.
- Respond to distress: Do not force a highly distressed dog to stay confined. VCA advises stopping the session and contacting a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist when distress is marked.
VCA’s practical guidance is explicit: “A crate is not an excuse to ignore the dog!” Follow its crate-training and confinement guidance and step-by-step crate-training advice.

Watch for safety and comfort issues
A dog that is approached or moved while asleep may startle, and guarding a bed can also create risk. If either is a concern, avoid situations that trigger it and choose a sleeping place that allows everyone to rest safely. A nearby floor-level dog bed may be more comfortable for some dogs, particularly those that have difficulty getting onto or off a human bed.

Distinguish a longstanding preference for sleeping more from a recent change. The American Kennel Club lists cognitive changes, pain or arthritis, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, heart disease, and some cancers among conditions associated with altered sleep or lethargy in senior dogs. A veterinarian can assess what is happening with your individual dog; a new sleep pattern should not simply be treated as disobedience.

A supportive dog bed, a quiet resting area, and keeping needed water nearby may make the space more comfortable, but these steps do not diagnose or treat an underlying condition. Read the AKC overview of sleep changes in senior dogs. As AKC Chief Veterinary Officer Jerry Klein, DVM, puts it: “Dogs thrive on routine, and owners are very attuned to their dogs’ routine. If their regular routine starts to shift, owners should make a note and consult with their veterinarian to determine if everything is normal or if perhaps there are issues involved.”
