Keep the routine predictable, invite interaction gently with treats or play, and open the rest of the home gradually. There is no reliable universal number of days for a cat to settle in; follow the individual cat’s comfort rather than a deadline.
Set up a quiet home base
Start your cat in a small, calm room instead of giving it the run of an unfamiliar home. Provide food, water, a litter box, familiar items if available, and comfortable hiding options. A hiding place should be safe and accessible; offer options both low down and higher up if you can.

Hiding gives a frightened cat a way to cope with unfamiliar sights, sounds, and people. Leave the cat’s refuge available rather than reaching in to pull it out. ASPCA’s guidance for shy cats recommends a quiet room and places to hide: Undercover Cats: Who They Are and Why They Need Us.
A purchased hideaway is not essential
A cozy covered bed can provide a den-like refuge, but a safe cardboard box or other suitable nook may work too. What matters is that the cat can enter and leave without being trapped. Avoid blocking access to its chosen hiding spot when it needs space.

Let the cat choose when to interact
Spend calm time in the room without making contact the goal. Sit quietly, read, or carry on a low-key activity nearby. Let the cat approach and retreat freely. ASPCA notes that shy cats generally prefer to interact with people on their own terms, so avoid cornering, chasing, forced petting, or repeated attempts to coax the cat out.
You can offer a treat or gently present a wand toy if the cat seems interested. Keep the invitation low-pressure: if the cat declines, withdraw and try another time. In one ASPCA adopter story, a cat named Hazel enjoyed treats and wand-toy play while retaining access to her favorite hiding place. Open the rest of the home in stages
Keep other rooms closed at first so the cat can learn one manageable space. When it appears comfortable in its starter room, let it explore additional areas at its own pace. Leave the home base available so it can retreat there.
Before expanding access, make the areas the cat can reach safer. ASPCA’s moving guidance recommends securing windows, removing poisonous plants and pest-control traps, and blocking spaces where a pet could become stuck: ASPCA guidance on moving with your pet.

How long does a shy cat take to settle in?
There is no evidence-based universal timeline in these sources. Individual ASPCA examples describe cats adjusting after a few days, around three weeks, or needing several weeks or longer; these accounts are stories and profiles, not averages or promises. A cat may grow more comfortable at home yet remain timid around guests or in particular situations.
ASPCA also presents a “3-3-3 Guideline” as broad transition guidance, but it should be treated as a rule of thumb, not a validated statistic or a deadline for an individual cat: ASPCA’s 3-3-3 Guideline. Measure progress by the cat’s behavior and comfort, not by whether it meets a particular day count.

When to ask for individualized help
