Connect the Playwright MCP server to an MCP-compatible AI client, have the agent navigate to the page, then call browser_take_screenshot with type: "jpeg". The tool can save a JPEG to a named file, capture the viewport or full page, and target a specific element. The setup below uses Playwright’s official MCP server; configuration placement depends on your client.
Set up Playwright MCP in your AI client
Playwright MCP exposes browser automation tools to compatible MCP clients. Its getting-started guide gives this standard server configuration:

Navigate to the HTML page and capture a JPEG
- Ask the agent to open the target URL using the Playwright navigation tool.
- Wait for the page to load sufficiently for your task. If important content appears after navigation, have the agent inspect the page and wait for that content before capturing.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith an explicit JPEG type and a filename:

}This captures the viewport by default. The screenshot tool documents png, jpeg, and webp as supported types. If you omit type, Playwright infers the format from the filename extension; otherwise, it uses PNG. Setting type: "jpeg" avoids ambiguity about the requested output format. Choose the capture area
- Viewport: omit
fullPageandtargetto capture what is visible in the current browser viewport. - Full scrollable page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the page beyond the current viewport. - One element: use
targetwith a snapshot reference or selector to capture a particular element. A target cannot be combined withfullPage: true.

Choose output handling and resolution
When you provide filename, the tool saves the image to that path; a relative path is resolved from the workspace root. If you omit filename, the tool saves the screenshot in its output directory and also returns the image inline for the model. The screenshot reference also documents a scale choice: css produces CSS-pixel sizing, while device uses device-pixel resolution. Use the choice that matches whether you need a layout-sized image or device-resolution output.

Playwright MCP’s accessibility snapshots expose page roles, text, and references the agent can use to locate and interact with controls. Screenshots instead show rendered pixels, which are useful for checking layout, charts, canvas content, or image-heavy regions. For a reliable workflow, have the agent use a snapshot to find or interact with a page element, then take the screenshot when you need visual evidence. Coordinate-based vision tools are optional and require a vision-capable model. They are not required just to save a screenshot. Playwright MCP’s documented default is to open the browser in headed mode, but client and server behavior can change; this is not a prerequisite for specifying JPEG output.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The screenshot is PNG instead of JPEG: set
typetojpeg. If relying on inference, make sure the filename ends in.jpegor another supported JPEG extension. - The image contains only the visible portion of the page: add
fullPage: true. Do not also passtarget; full-page capture and element targeting cannot be combined. - The wrong element is captured or the target cannot be found: ask the agent to inspect an accessibility snapshot and use the relevant snapshot ref, or provide a valid selector through
target. Confirm the element exists after navigation and any required page interaction. - The saved file is not where expected: check the supplied filename and remember that relative paths resolve against the workspace root. If no filename was supplied, look in the tool’s output directory.
- The capture is blank or missing late-loading content: wait for the relevant page content to appear before taking the screenshot. Navigation completing does not necessarily mean every image or dynamic component has finished rendering.
- The screenshot tool or parameter is unavailable: verify the server is connected and inspect the tools and schema exposed by the installed Playwright MCP version. Optional tool groups and client configuration differ, and parameter details can change.
