How to Handle Zobrist Hash Collisions in a Chess Engine

Index collisions and false hits are different transposition-table problems. Learn which defenses address each, how Stockfish handles its table, and how to test your engine.

Handle Zobrist hash collisions by separating two different problems: collisions that send positions to the same transposition-table bucket, and false hits where a stored verification signature matches a different position. Use clustered lookup and deliberate replacement to manage bucket contention; use a wider verification signature—or an exact state comparison when practical—to reduce false hits. These defenses address different failure modes.

Two kinds of collision require different defenses

Index collisions: positions compete for table space

A transposition table has finite capacity, so different position keys can map to the same bucket or cluster. That does not mean the positions have been mistaken for one another: it means their entries compete for limited storage. A cluster can hold several entries that share an index, while a replacement policy decides which entry to evict when the cluster is full.

Signature collisions: a false hit is accepted

A false hit occurs when a position reaches a table entry belonging to another position and the stored verification data also matches. The engine may then use unrelated search information. The risk depends on what the engine stores and compares to verify a hit; the table index alone is not an identity check.

Make the position key represent all relevant state

Before changing table width or replacement logic, verify that the key captures every state element that distinguishes positions in your engine. In Stockfish’s implementation, the position key combines Zobrist values for piece-square occupancy, side to move, castling rights, and the en-passant file. The exact state needed can vary by engine and supported rules or variants.

Check that incremental key updates remain consistent with a key recomputed from the position after both make and unmake operations. If these disagree, the table can be queried with a key that does not represent the current state, independently of ordinary hash collisions.

Use buckets for index collisions and a policy for replacement

Clustered tables let multiple entries with the same selected index coexist. On a probe, inspect the entries in the selected cluster; when inserting into a full cluster, replace an entry according to a deliberate value policy, commonly considering search depth and age. This manages capacity pressure and preserves useful search results when possible, but it does not strengthen the verification signature.

Stockfish is one concrete design. Its current transposition-table implementation selects a cluster using the key and compares the low 16 bits of the key against entries in that cluster. If no entry matches, it chooses a replacement using a depth-and-age valuation. Those details describe the cited source revision, not a requirement for other engines.

Choose verification strength to match the cost of a false hit

Approach False-hit protection Cost and trade-off
Short verification signature Rejects entries whose stored short signature differs, but accidental matches remain possible. Uses less entry space and can keep lookup compact; the remaining risk depends on the signature width and table design.
Wider independent signature Reduces the chance that a different position passes verification; it is probabilistic, not proof of identity. Consumes more bits per entry, reducing space for other data or the number of entries that fit in a fixed amount of memory.
Exact position or state comparison Can provide stronger identity assurance if the comparison covers all relevant state. Requires more stored information or additional lookup work. This is an engineering option, not a feature attributed here to Stockfish.

Albert L. Zobrist’s original paper describes an auxiliary retrieval-error detector and explains that its error rate can be controlled by the space allocated to it. That is the core trade-off: stronger verification consumes storage and potentially lookup work. Consult the original Zobrist paper for that approach.

Validate a hit before letting it affect the search

A matching verification signature is not by itself permission to treat a cached score as exact. Apply the engine’s normal search rules: check whether the stored depth is sufficient and whether the bound type supports the intended cutoff in the current search context. A transposition-table score can be a bound rather than an exact evaluation. Before playing or otherwise relying on a cached move, confirm that it is legal in the current position.

How Stockfish illustrates the trade-off

Stockfish’s table is a speed-oriented example: it uses clusters, checks a compact in-cluster signature, and replaces entries using depth and relative age. Its table header also notes that the shared table permits racy updates to avoid synchronization cost, and warns that collisions can cause chess-playing issues. That is a deliberate implementation trade-off, not general advice that unsynchronized access is safe for every engine.

“As a hash table, collisions are possible and may cause chess playing issues (bizarre blunders, faulty mate reports, etc).”

Test collision handling separately from key correctness

  • Compare incremental keys with keys recomputed from the full position after make and unmake operations.
  • In a test build, deliberately truncate the verification signature to provoke false hits and check that the engine rejects or safely limits their effects.
  • Record index conflicts separately from signature mismatches. The first measures table contention; the second concerns false acceptance.
  • Exercise score cutoffs and cached moves after a match, including cases where depth or bound type should prevent a cutoff and where a cached move is illegal.

These are implementation and debugging methods, not reported benchmark results. The cited sources do not establish a collision rate for a particular engine configuration, and a larger table alone does not add verification bits to a fixed-size entry. More capacity can reduce replacement pressure; stronger verification addresses false hits directly.
