If a 24/7 stream’s chat will be unattended, either arrange trusted moderator coverage or turn live chat off. YouTube’s automatic filters can hold some potentially inappropriate messages, but they are not a substitute for a person: held messages stay hidden unless a moderator reviews them. Turning chat off also makes Super Chats and Super Stickers unavailable for that video.
Choose how the stream will be covered

Set up moderator coverage before leaving chat open
- Choose a trusted moderator. YouTube’s standard moderators can remove messages, put users in time out, hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have additional controls, including the ability to change some live chat settings. YouTube says managing moderators do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio, so the channel owner should configure stream and channel settings in advance. - Agree on rules and escalation. Tell the moderator what to remove, when to time out or hide a user, and what issues to bring to the owner. Apply the same rules to paid and unpaid messages; a Super Chat is still a chat message and can be moderated.
- Make coverage explicit. Confirm who is watching during the hours the owner is away and how they can contact the owner if something needs a decision. Do not leave chat open on the assumption that a moderator will be available unless that has been agreed.
Configure YouTube’s safeguards
Before the unattended period, open YouTube Studio and configure the live chat moderation controls. YouTube documents three levels for potentially inappropriate messages: None, Basic, and Strict. With Basic or Strict enabled, messages the system identifies as potentially inappropriate are held for review. They remain hidden unless an authorized person chooses to show them.

- Choose Basic or Strict moderation if you want potentially inappropriate messages held for review. YouTube cautions that no system catches everything; the channel or moderator still decides whether a held message should be shown.
- Add blocked words for terms that violate your channel rules. This can help filter known problem language, but it cannot anticipate every harmful or unsuitable message.
- Consider slow mode to limit how frequently viewers can post. It adds friction but does not replace reviewing chat.

Decide what to do with Super Chats
State clearly that payment does not guarantee a message will stay visible or receive a response. YouTube allows Super Chats and Super Stickers to be moderated like other chat messages. If a Super Chat or Sticker is removed for violating YouTube policies, YouTube says it donates its portion of the revenue to charity. Moderating or deleting a Super does not generate a refund: YouTube describes Supers as voluntary, non-refundable payments. For revenue context, YouTube says creators receive 70% of Supers revenue confirmed by Google, calculated after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees; YouTube currently covers transaction costs such as credit card fees. Turn chat off if nobody can cover it
If you do not want messages appearing without review, the clearest fallback is to switch live chat off for the video. YouTube allows the owner to turn chat off during a stream, except on Premieres. With chat off, viewers cannot send new chat messages, and Super Chats and Super Stickers are unavailable for that video. You lose live chat interaction and Supers availability, but do not have unattended incoming chat to moderate. Review the stream afterward
When coverage resumes, check held messages and the chat archive, then update blocked words or moderator guidance if you found a gap. Deleting a Super Chat message after the live stream does not cause a refund, so avoid promising viewers that moderation will return their payment.
