Handle popups according to what they are and what the screenshot needs to show. A browser-native JavaScript dialog such as alert() uses the automation framework’s dialog API; a cookie notice, newsletter modal, or sticky banner is ordinary webpage UI and should usually be handled through its visible controls. For a faithful record, leave the overlay in view. For a controlled layout comparison, dismiss it deliberately or mask it narrowly, and note any change to the rendered state.
Decide what the screenshot should prove
Before changing the page, choose the purpose of the image. A bug report or record of a visitor’s experience should normally show the obstruction as it appeared. A layout or content regression image may need a consistent unobstructed view instead. In that case, decide whether to dismiss the overlay through its normal control or exclude a specific area with a screenshot mask or stylesheet.
- Faithfulness: keep the overlay visible if it is part of the experience being documented.
- Determinism: explicitly dismiss a predictable overlay, or mask a specific element when it is outside the comparison’s scope.
- Transparency: record when a dismissal, mask, or injected style changes what the screenshot shows.
- Coverage: use a viewport screenshot for the visible screen and a full-page screenshot when below-the-fold content matters.
These are workflow choices; the screenshot API provides controls but does not decide which representation is appropriate.

Native JavaScript dialogs
alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload dialogs belong to the browser, not the page’s DOM. Handle them with the framework’s dialog API. See Playwright’s dialog documentation and Selenium’s WebDriver alerts guide.
Page-built popups and banners
Cookie notices, newsletter prompts, sign-up modals, promotional overlays, and sticky banners are webpage elements. Locate the relevant visible controls and follow the intended action—accept, reject, close, or another choice—rather than treating every obstruction as a browser alert.
A broad CSS deletion rule or arbitrary sleep may hide legitimate content or make captures nondeterministic. Prefer an explicit, stable locator and a meaningful user action.

Dismiss predictable overlays in Playwright
When an overlay appears at a known point in the flow, handle it directly in that flow. The example below uses a role and accessible name; replace the button name and page URL with those actually present on the target site.

});The locator is illustrative, not a selector guaranteed to exist on any particular site. Inspect the page and use its actual accessible name or another stable locator. Waiting for the control and confirming it is hidden helps catch a failed dismissal before the capture.

Handle overlays that appear unpredictably
For an overlay that may appear during otherwise unrelated actions, Playwright provides page.addLocatorHandler(). Its handler is checked before actions or assertions that require actionability; it does not run simply because an overlay appears while the script performs no action. That makes it useful as a targeted fallback, not a substitute for explicit handling of a predictable popup.

Resolve native dialogs without stalling
Playwright automatically dismisses dialogs when there is no page.on('dialog') listener. If you register a listener, it must accept or dismiss each dialog; leaving one unresolved can stall the action that triggered it. Choose based on the dialog’s meaning and the test, rather than applying a blanket accept policy.

Mask or style an overlay instead of dismissing it
If the overlay should remain part of the page state but is irrelevant to a visual comparison, Playwright’s screenshot API can mask selected locators or apply a stylesheet during capture. Keep the selector narrow and document that the resulting image is altered.

Use it only for the specific element or region being excluded; broad rules such as hiding every element with a class containing “modal” can conceal legitimate page content. Verify the image and diagnose failures
- Check the target and viewport. A viewport capture and a full-page capture answer different questions; select the one that matches the purpose.
- Confirm the intended action occurred. Assert that a dismissed control is hidden, or verify the expected page state after a native dialog is resolved.
- Inspect the saved image. Make sure the overlay did not reappear and that the relevant content remains visible.
- Make alterations explicit. Label or annotate images that use a mask, injected CSS, or a dismissal that changes the visitor-visible state.

Keep the site-design question separate
Removing an overlay in a test does not make an intrusive design less disruptive to visitors. Google Search Central warns that intrusive interstitials can frustrate users and erode trust, and recommends allowing users to access content without interruption where possible.
